Winter Storm Update
Good evening everyone. It is game on for our winter storm and it's good to see everybody else jumping on the snow train. Winter storm warnings have been extended farther west as we suspected and for good reason. The New runs of the GFS and NAM are both much wetter and farther west and match up nicely with our snowfall forecast which will remain the same...

Far southeastern Kentucky will see more than a foot of snow out of this! Snowfall rates of greater than 2" per hour will be possible this evening through the overnight. Looking at the dynamics... I wonder if someone can hear a rumble of thunder across the south or east!!! Wow!
Here is a radar to track the snows...

Current Temps

Web cams from across the region that I hope update....

Help us out by continuing to posting the weather where you are. I will have more updates through the evening so check back. Take care.

It looks as if the cold is working from the east to west? Or is there no front at all and we are just waiting for dynamic cooling?

No such thing. She got that from the things in the upper right corner of the screen on 18, 27 and 36. CB said it would be heavy snow and 1 to 2 inches an hour likely. If we do the math and look at the snowfall forecast, it will only take a few hours of snow action to meet and even perhaps beat the snow map CB posted.

Still moderate snow here in Barbourville. Luckily we didn't have the switch over to rain. If this thing stays snow then we will have a decent amount. Still think we will end up on the low end of the forecast though. I think it may really be a bust forecast for the ones that started snow and changed to rain. We have a 3 or 4 inch head start and I don't think there is enough moisture to catch up.

First to admit I am dumb, but if three to six inches is to fall in the general area, why "weather advisory" and not "storm warning"?
Seems wires are crossed or vastly differing forecast expectations by different weather entities.
BTW, the precip from the south does look like it is not as concentrated, so we will see lulls in whatever actually falls.
In Richmond's case- coooold chubby rain

Folks, I am not seeing the big snow heading this way, but do see intermittent bands perhaps will hit us. Unless it is going to build strength again it looks like it is breaking up to the south and moved faster than planned to out north east.
Almost looks like two systems are fighting over KY with neither winning the fight or helping each other.
My guess now is that some will get the snow map, but it will not be in the smooth map layout, but real spotty. Not long to find out.

Snowing more steadily in my corner of Barbourville. We never went to rain, but the snow really slowed after that burst of jumbo flakes earlier. Then, about an hour ago, the bigger flakes returned. I'm seeing only 1 1/2 inches or so at this point, but I almost wonder if the snow is so wet and heavy that it's hard to judge amounts.

Only in KY do we get forecasted 6-12 inches of snow and in reality get a 32 degree rain. It's just not meant to be folks. Clippers are all this state has to cling their snow hopes on anymore.

Are you in an area that was forecasted to get that much snow and are just getting rain? Most of the reports I've seen show those areas are getting in on it???

OMG BUBBA
You're RIGHT.......EXCLUDING clippers, >33=rain <32=dry! LOL......My dad had the audacity to TEXT me earlier and told me it was snowing at 2 inches per hour in Brevard, NC. He says he guestimates 8to10 inches have fallen there but it's stopped now. That's the largest snowfall for that area (for DEC) since 1971! (per local news) He said this is the biggest snow they have had in YEARS! Growing up I NEVER remember having any decent snow in DEC! The big ones always came Jan/Feb/Mar I'm so jealous I'm not back home at the moment
Reply to this
Yep, for some reason, central KY has become the winter weather transitional area- aka fence, dome, anti-snow zone, Bermuda snow triangle, no-snow zone, flake free, etc.
11 years and counting

Still snowing pretty hard in Perry County, just north of Hazard.

Think it's time for an updated forecast because they missed this one tonight. wonder what's causing this to be so much more warmer than they thought? cant get it right all the time weatherman. My friends in Kingsport, Tn say they got 6" and the power is flickering on and off.
Reply to this
Well, the NAM and GFS both showed temps. above freezing at the surface all night long...so if "they" thought it was going to be a lot colder than this...then somebody misread the modeling.
Reply to this
Well, I'm 10 miles south of Frankfort and 20 miles west of Lexington...and the temp here just went UP two-tenths of a degree in the past 15 mins.
Perhaps my thoughts from earlier today were correct...the official/media predicted snow amounts are going to be WAY off.
Reply to this
well they sure didn't miss it here...we've got about 5 in. and still snowing hard!!!!

I called LMK and they said reports around the LEX area have been 31-35 degrees. I guess people have faulty home weather stations...because it's not that cold. 37 at my house in Lawrenceburg....ALL mesonet sites around me are at 37 including LEX...and it's holding steady. Plain rain, no snow mixing in.

And no updates from any of the mets or from the NWS. You have to think there will be some big time revisions to some of the forecasts around the area (London-Corbin and points west). At this point..a slushy inch or so looks about right for southern KY.

Spin city now
Some areas DID get the snow
If anyone even pretends to know what the next system will do, I will laugh in their general direction
DO NOT BELIEVE IT UNTIL IT IS ACTUALLY FALLING AND UP TO YOUR SHINS. Nothing less will do
There will still be some heavy bands tonight and some will get decent snow, but the current maps and outlooks are extreme now- it would seem.

Kind of "same old song" since this was to be a winter storm warning and now a sporadic "advisory" but that is what the alert has been since this afternoon.
I really though this was the one. if this does not suck the life out of eternal optimism, I do not know what will.
Looks like it is a lot more spotty for snow totals and not as broad and smooth a snow cover- makes sense based on the moisture not looking as concentrated coming from the south.
Still, the alerts seem contradictory- outlooks showing several or more inches, but just an advisory?? Sounds like people were hedging their bets

It's still snowing lightly and steadily in Barbourville. Is it possible it will turn to rain tonight and wash everything away? The acuweather radar is hard for me to read at the moment. It looks as if rain is moving in, and there's this now-you-see-it-now-you-don't pink spot that comes and goes over Knox county.

the radar is an approximation 3 different precip types radars in a set-up like this one will have all be different for you location one rain another snow and the final one a mix. i doubt you will switch back to rain.

the 540 thickness value is one of the measures used by forecasters to determine rain vs snow, over 540- rain or ice under 540- snow. It generally is a good rule of thumb in the wintertime.

Several of you are so disappointed, do you really want 6, 8, 10 inches of heavy wet snow that in all likelihood would result in you losing power for a day or two?? The ones with 5,6 in. of snow have already said their power was flickering.. I believe i'll take the rain so I can enjoy a weekend of watching the cats play and NFL.. and of course a warm bed.

When was the last time we actually had a forecast for snow in the LEX area actually pan out? I mean 99 times out of 100 we either get way less than predicted or more often nothing at all. When was the last time we were predicted to get several inches of snow and got a nice surprise from an over-achiever. I guess we still have to go back to 1998, cause it doesn't appear it will ever happen again...
Reply to this
I used to live in London, Ky. Moved to Sevier Co. Tn and figured I wouldn't see much snow here. We had about 2 inches of wet snow today, and the temp is holding at 32F. While it was snowing here, it was raining further north. My elevation is only about 1100ft, so I'm really puzzled why it snowed this far south, and rained further north. STRANGE! We also had about 1.4 inches of rain before the snow fell.
Oh well, just thought I'd drop a line to my fellow Kentuckians. Maybe someday I'll come home, but I think I'd rather move over to North Carolina. They seem to get the "big ones" any more when it comes to snow.
Ya'll have a good night, and Merry Christmas!!!!

Well, nothing here in Somerset at the moment. Michael S, I have not seen any rain, but our snow has stopped, too, at this point.
I do see that the forecast is saying that snow will develop more overnight, so there is still a chance. We have about an inch right now, but it has melted off the roads, and they are just wet right now. Temp goes below freezing and all side roads are gonna get slick.
Hope Chris updates soon. I am sure he will give some insight. He always does.

I appreciate MJ chiming in with a great explanation about what is happening. I actually checked out CB’s blog a bit ago and got a kick out of everyone jumping off ship totally since we haven’t seen a changeover to snow here in Lexington…and it has gone back to rain in spots down south.
The funny thing is…it was never supposed to change over here in the bluegrass until mid to late evening at the earliest…and the main kicker for our snow here in Lexington is the upper level support coming overnight…so the bottom line is patience people. The game isn’t even to half time yet!!!
These totals we kick out are for the ENTIRE deal…through SATURDAY…not Friday evening…so for folks on here (and those on CB’s blog if someone wants to pass it along)…chill out and wait until later Saturday until you give up and call it a bust.
More to come!

Well it's still raining and 37 here in Campbellsville.....I have to say this forecast is a major bust for most of Ky unless we get alot of enhancement from the western little system overnight...doesn't seem likely since most of the moisture will be heading out just as the western system catches us with colder air.....there is still a chance we get some accumulation if this thing would just change to snow here but the chances are growing more slim
