Saturday Snowball Roundup
Good Saturday afternoon everyone and thanks for dropping by the blog. I want to start off by saying a big thanks to each of you for all the hard work you have put into making this THE hot spot for weather. The big winter storm is now pulling east of the area and put down a heck of a lot of snow across eastern and southeastern Kentucky.
The snow totals we put out have been pretty good. Central Kentucky had a VERY sharp cutoff to the accumulating snows. The totals across the south and east were impressive with local amounts of 10"-12" in some spots.
If you are looking for more snow... you are in luck as we have more light to moderate snows to go through the rest of tonight into early Sunday. This will lay down more light accumulations of an inch or two during this time with eastern parts of the state again doing a little better. You can track these snows here...

Our next system is a clipper that will roll through here Sunday night and Monday and will also bring some new accumulations to the region. The GFS shows an additional snowfall of 1"-3" through Monday for most of the area with higher amounts in the southeast...

The system for Christmas Eve into Christmas Day continues to look like it will cause a lot of problems for a lot of people. This continues to look like something that can put down ice and snow to rain then snow around here.
I warned you to get ready because this winter means business and we have a TON of wintry weather. The pattern is locked and loaded and Winter Storm Threats are going to be common the rest of the winter. To get a snowstorm like this in the middle of December is impressive, to say the least! Our winter forecast that called for much above snowfall for southern and eastern parts of the state is off to one heck of a good start!
I will have another update later this evening so check back. Take care.

Thanks Chris for the update.. Glad to see you have power!!
Here is an earlier post of mine..
GOOOO BIG BLUE!!!!!!!!!
----
I'm so glad we didn't get too much of this mess.. Too many power outages in 4+ states. My family has no power, and the last word they got was its gonna take "DAYS" to get restored. This kind of storm reminds me of snowstorms we get in March or April. This particuliar one reminds me of the one in April 1987, I think I have the year right? Roofs collapsing and trees are just crumbled to the ground.
The subfreezing snowstorms are much more fun & safer.
As of this morning, Chris was spot on!! We had about 3-4". here in this part of Berea. I'm really THANKFUL to Chris, if it wasn't for his "EARLY" heads up, there would've been alot of more people unprepared, including my family and friends in Pike County. I have alot of friends in Mingo & Logan County in West Virgina, they still don't know when their power will be restored. So I'm counting my blessings on this snowstorm.
I'm THANKFUL for the NWS, but sometimes its best to have a "BUSTED" forecast, at least the people that don't have an optional HEAT solution COULD'VE had some kind of warning alot earlier then 24hrs. By that time, everything is sold out!!
As far as the Christmas storm and my thoughts at this time, I HOPE it either rains or snows, the ground temps may come to "HAUNT" us, Let's either pray for rain or snow, because if the ARTIC AIR isn't here when it gets here, we are gonna see a repeat of Janurary icestorm! I HOPE I'm WRONG!!!

Thanks Chris for all you do...my power was out for about 14 and a half hours (from shortly after 10pm Friday until after 12:30pm today) here in Isom in Letcher County. Stay safe today.

Radar shows rain in lexington, but it is actually snowing at a good pace now.

Radar can't tell the difference. It thinks it's rain because the temperature is above 32. Take it with a grain of salt.

I don't know if I can take another winter riding the fence. .4 inches in Versailles according to Mitch. Something has to give or I'm afraid I'll a Bubba G. convert before it's all said and done.

Meant to say " I'm afrraid I'll become a Bubba G. convert"

Guess our best bet as usual are clippers for snow and not to rely on the NAM/GFS ect ...
It said and did what it did in South Eastern KY but for the central part of the state is was a fat ZERO.
Oh well we have several more tries at some really good snow days and think we all can say it is really cool to see snow this early on for us.
Appreciate all of your work Chris.

I came to Charleston, WV for the weekend, but my parents in Martin County, KY, have no electricity. The estimated restoration of power is Dec. 26. NOT good!Snowfall there 7-8 inches as of this morning.
Reply to this
OK, so now you eastern KY folks can join the big snow elite while us central KY folks get nuttin' but scraps
Again, if the ground was below freezing last night, we would be either not been blogging or doing it from hotels and motels- assuming they had power too.

Prepare just in case, folks!
We could get an ice smackdown this coming week. You KNOW that if the mix is rain, ice and snow, we will get mainly ICE.
This system looks scary similar to the our last mega ice storm about ten months ago.

My Precious the light rain is washing away my precious snow

Congratulations to all who got significant snowfall. Nothing to even really speak of up here in the LEX area...but it's technically not even Winter yet. We'll get some next time maybe.
GO TOPS!! 39-33 all time against Loserville...let's make it 40!!

good attitude WXman others should follow this example

Well, we got about three inches, but a lot of it is melting already, as our temp is 39 right now. Was beautiful while it lasted. Chris' forecast was spot on for us, as he said 3-6 here.
Bernie, as much as I want a white Christmas, one of my daughters os going to be travelling, and so WE won't have Christmas here until the Saturday after. I don't want her to get stuck in Ohio, or ANYWHERE, for that matter...
other than that, i say ...LET IT SNOW, Let it Snow, Let it SNOW!!!!

Wx, I totally agree with you1 I hope they get it, and make it 40-33!
Our snowfall wasn't big, but as you said, it's technically not even winter yet! so, we have lots to hope for!

I think the CHRITMAS STORM will start as rainm and change to HEAVY SNOW, with majior SNOWFALL possible, the cold asir will pudh this system track to our liking, it will not be a laske cutter.
more like a low over top of us with a low to our south and east as well.

BERNIE IN APRIL 87 we had 2 feet so this was no er close to that storm.
THANK GOD cause like u said alot of power outages with this, image 20 plus inches.

I lived in Virginia and was 2 months old in the DEC1989 arctic air outbreak it was a bitter december from what my parents tell me. it was 8 degrees chritamas morning at my grandparents house in alexandria, btw they have over a foot on the ground today and called to make me feel bad about how it doesnt snow in central ky
Reply to this
I am not impressed with snow for tonight or Sunday/Monday inregards to the Somerset area looks like a dusting at best here. I also hope it just rains for Christmas if ice is a better pro ability than snow, which it always is here. I have no illusions or expectations anymore for snow.

metoeorlogical winter started dec 5 two weeks with a negative nao have already been wasted for quite a few of us. this pattern of lakes cutter followed by a storm that goes to far east may never end. hvy rain then no snow the cycle continues.

Coffeelady, It'll all be good when I have to dig a clearing in the snow for my dogs to go to the bathroom.
By the way I love the website you have. You write some really good down home pieces on it.

Agreed,Mike, to you & Coffeelady, as well! We still have plenty of time for big snowfalls this year, and hopefully more time to enjoy them. Even tho we wish for a nice white Christmas, we don't want to get so much that we can't enjoy it with family & friends because we can't get out of the house!
I didn't know CL had a blog, so I just took a short gander at it, and yes!

Hey everyone, I'm currently running on generator power but figured I would give everyone a little update.
Measured about 8 inches of snow this morning, extensive damage to trees to and power lines. Roads were almost impassable this morning, but have been cleared pretty well this morning. Hoping to get power restored this evening, I really need to take a shower.

Got stuck in moderation so I'm typing this again.
I'm running on generator power right now, around 70% of letcher county still has no power.
Tree damage is extensive, a lot have been uprooted entirely from the ground. Here's some pictures I snapped during the day today.

What is the latest on the Christmas storm?? Please someone tell me it isn't going to be ICE!!!!

Cold rain in Richmond. Wild.
We currently seem to have more of a chance for ice this week than big snow. Same set up perhaps as the last ice storm.
Reply to this
Looks more like a lakes cutter with cold rain for everyone in Kentucky.
I would be happy if we just had over 2 inches of snow on the ground in December here in Lexington. Hopefully that clipper will hold together and do just that.

Actually, I am talking about right now- we have nuttin's but cold rain coming down.
Central Kentucky Weather SUCKS worse than Bobby Knight.

COLD rain. Coming down like ice rain, but ground is juuust above freezing, so not yet a problem.

FYI, if you ever need to find a UK game that isn't been shown live in your area you can check the following site. www.justin.tv have many live feeds 24/7 from tv shows, sports, movies, webcams whatever. However, I do think this was one of the few times that I couldn't find UK on it today. It might have had something to do with power outages since these feeds come from viewers. 9 out of 10 times you can find any game your looking for on there just takes a few minutes to search sometimes. They'll have all the bowl games as well I'm sure.

Not sure why this didn't post a few minutes ago. However, if you ever need to find UK or any other game, tv show or whatever check out www.justin.tv these games are feed live by viewers and 9 out of 10 times you can find whatever your looking for. However, today was the first time in 2 years I couldn't find a UK game when I tried. Hope this helps you out in the future.

Add this into the forecast..
A half inch at best for most locations in central Kentucky from tonight's "clipper."
It's definitely underperforming in terms of clipper snowfall on the whole...
Half of an inch at best for most locations in central Kentucky (Lexington, Louisville, Richmond, Nicholasville, Somerset, Stanford, Danville, Irvine, Winchester, Berea, Lawrenceville, Liberty, Wilmore, etc.)
Still, a few flakes to come down to enhance the storm we had Saturday.

Just a big shout out to CHRIS right now, because he needs it...he's one of the best forecasters we have in this area..and he beats out others in their accuracy---when Chris knows it's going to snow...then "by goodness.." he knows it's going to happen!!
Kudos, kudos, kudos!!
Encore!!! Let's do it again! *big smile*

Remember the Snow Dome equation
31 degrees - dry air
+ 33 degress - cold rain

I think the Justintv site was shut down. I heard it had something to do with copyright violations... anyway, I sure do miss the site as it was a good place to watch the game when you couldn't get it at home, and you could even go back later and watch anything you might have missed before.

No the site is still up just no one had UK today. I watched multiple football games there today while at work.

Alright MikeM...I can do arithmetic....31+33=64......but I still don't understand your point...
I basically busted out the theory of 33 degree snow earlier....and I think for the most part that happened yesterday...as we had big snow coming down at 33 or 34, and then as the snow came down hard, the temps dropped quite a bit.
Was it a big snowstorm for the bluegrass? No.. But was it expected to be a big storm for the bluegrass? NO.
This was a light snow that was expected, and that's just what we got.
The forecasts were almost perfect in terms of snowfall.
Now, to your usage of 33+ = rain, 31 or less equals dry air and no snow.....what about 32? HAHAH!!
You left out a number, my friend. 32, the freezing point. Trust me, I drove in it for 30 miles last night. The snow was coming down quite heavily at times.
Yeah, if the ground temp was 28 or less, we could've had a big snowstorm...but the ground temperatures hindered actual accumulation. But what fell out of the sky was no less a decent snow, overall.
P.S.---This winter, so far, is acting VERY similar to 1976-1977.
We're finally off to the "Right Start" I had been looking for.

watch CBC former channel she said flurries wrap up early tomm and we dry out.lol
BAILEY and the guy who says CHRISTMAS SNOWSTORM FOR US JOE BASTARDI deserve BIG PROPS.
BASTARDI still sdays no way on lake cutter, says low over top ohio/tenn valley moving north east with a east coast low as well which will take over and throw moisture back into the low in OHIO/TENN VALLEY.

Are there any people here reading this blog that grew up in the 60s 70s 80s? My reason for asking; someone on another blog stated "Lexington and central KY" are not/ nor ever have really been a favorable area for big snow storms, that it usually only occurred only twice per decade as an average. I have lived here since 1997 and have seen the one in 1998, but I wasn't aware that one or two storms per decade was typical, I thought it was more. When I say that, I'm referring to 1998 and before
Reply to this
Grew up in the 60's and 70's, I can tell you in the late 60's until the late 70's we had some Monster snowstorms! And the Winters of 77 & 78 it seemed like it snowed every 3 or 4 days, snow on the ground all the time. I remember people driving ACROSS Laurel Lake, solid thick ice. It was a fun time!
Reply to this
Yep, we got big snow in 77 and 78 and had floods in March. I was in Europe from 82 to 86, but I think 1984 the area got nailed and especially east KY and they also got flooded then too.

I remember those years as well! Elkhorn creek froze completely. Our parents had to go to school to pick up our work because we had missed so much school. The snow drifts were awesome. Well, I better stop rambling or I'll tell my age.
Reply to this
They must be a teenager, since we have had big snows in 87, 89, 90, 92, 93 ,96, and 98. We fell off the cliff after that.
At least those years and I may have missed one.

I thought that as well BubbaG. You can always tell the young folks from the old cronies like me! LOL!

I saw that comment on TG's blog as well! I remember the winters were a lot colder in the 60's and we had snow on the ground a lot, deep snows too, not just the skiff of snow we have now.
Reply to this
Yea
The guy acted as if Central KY only got big snows a couple of times per decade! While that may be true NOW, I didn't think that was the case back in the day. But he intimated this was the case even back in the day, and since I didn't live here, I wanted to clarify.

jackson states SINCE CONFIDENCE REMAINS LOW AT THIS POINT...LETS TALK ABOUT
POSSIBLE SCENARIOS. EITHER TRACK HAS POTENTIAL TO PROVIDE PROBLEMS
LATE NEXT WEEK...JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS. THE MORE NORTHERLY
TRACK WOULD KEEP THINGS MOSTLY OR ALL RAIN...AND WITH RECENT MELTING
SNOW...WE COULD RUN INTO SOME HYDRO PROBLEMS. RIGHT NOW QPF DOESNT
LOOK TO BE OVER AN INCH AND FEEL THIS WOULDNT BE A HUGE IMPACT.
ALTHOUGH...AS WAS OBSERVED WITH OUR LATEST STORM...THE HIGH END QPF
SCENARIOS SOMETIMES DO PLAY OUT.
OTHERWISE...THE SOUTHERN TRACK SCENARIO THAT IS STILL CLINGING TO
HOPE WOULD PRESENT A COOLER AND SNOWIER SOLUTION...AND WE COULD BE
TALKING ABOUT A VERY WHITE CHRISTMAS.
