Winter Storm Tracker

Our winter storm is now in progress across the eastern half of Kentucky. As of this writing... up to 7" of snow has been reported across parts of southeastern Kentucky. Areas that have been seeing a mix have or will soon change to snow and that will be heavy at times.

The very latest run of the NAM model continued to suggest things were on track for a major snowfall...

That actually matched up pretty well with the snowfall map we put out earlier Friday so we will see how it all works out. This will be a very heavy, wet snow that is likely to cause power outages and bring down trees... especially across the east and southeast where more than a foot of snow is likely in some areas.

Snows will taper to a light to moderate variety later Saturday and this will actually continue into Sunday. A good northwesterly flow will be with us Saturday night which may lead to some enhancement of the snows yet again for the east.

Here is your snow tracking radar...

Looking down the road... our clipper for Sunday night and Monday still looks to bring the chance for another accumulating snow to the region and that's something we will deal with later this weekend. The Christmas storm is still on and should bring a mix of ice and snow to snow for us Christmas Eve into Christmas Day.

As far as the current storm is concerned... it's all up to old man winter now to deliver the goods. Help me and your fellow bloggers out by posting the weather where you live.

I will update as needed. Keep in mind that I will also be working my TV job during this time so be patient with me. Enjoy the snow and stay safe! Take care.

Woke up to about 3 inches this morning, which is about what we had last night when I went to bed. haven't looked at the updated forecast, but fell like we have gotten the bulk of what we are going to get. Which is within what Chris said, so I can't see it as a busted forecast. Besides, radar looks as if there might be some more later .

Probably a good thing, as I need to finish shopping. Dont like much, but need to get it done,

He figures around 5-6 inches was the most he had at one time so far, but some of it is melting off. He said as of our conversation it wasn't snowing. That was about 15 minutes ago.

THIS SYSTEM WILL EJECT TO THE NORTHEAST WITH RAINS
BEGINNING TO IMPACT THE FORECAST AREA BY WEDNESDAY. THE MODELS
CONTINUE TO HAVE DIFFICULTY WITH THE TIMING AND TRACK OF THE LOW
WITH THE ECMWF SLOWER AND FARTHER TO THE NORTH AND WEST THAN THE
GFS. REGARDLESS...WITH AMPLE MOISTURE BEING PULLED INTO THE SYSTEM
IT LOOKS LIKE WE COULD SEE A GOOD AMOUNT OF RAIN.

    I would write this as

right now it appears a strong low pressure system will track from southern texas to our north and west at this time prefered the warmer ecmwf to maintain with previous forecasts however the gfs is colder and farther southeast with the track than the euro this would result in the potential for a wintry mix at the start wednesday which might create holiday traveling problems. Precipitation should change to light snow or snow showers for christmas day.

that's not what I'm thinking by the way.

With the MOST of us still having power, it's a blessing that some of us didn't get as much of this mess.. Too many weak trees and poles due to the famous icestorm back in January. Mingo & Logan County West Virginia, having electric heat and no power and the last report they got was they estimated it would take "DAYS" to get the power back on.. THANK GOODNESS FOR GENERATORS, so its best to count our blessings on this one, this kind of storm reminds me of what we get in March when we get the heavy "WET" snow. The subfreezing snow is much more fun, not as heavy, and safer! Thats my 2 cents of the day.

Thanks Chris for the "EARLY" heads up and the sacrificing hard work that you put into the passion of weather! IF it hadn't been for you, alot of people in eastern KY would've been unprepared.

Latest from Jackson concerning the Christmas storm

THE EXTENDED PORTION OF THE FORECAST REMAINS VERY CHALLENGING.
OPERATIONAL MODELS CONTINUE TO DEVIATE WILDLY WITH THE DETAILS IN
DEVELOPING A DEEP SYSTEM IN THE PLAINS AND THEN SWINGING IT THROUGH
THE OHIO VALLEY. HPC CONTINUES TO TAKE AN ENSEMBLE APPROACH...WHICH
IS HARD TO ARGUE WITH GIVEN THE UNSTABLE OPERATIONAL GUIDANCE. THIS
WOULD BRING THE SYSTEM FURTHER SOUTH...MORE ACROSS THE TENNESSEE
VALLEY. HAVE DECIDED TO MAKE A FEW ADJUSTMENTS TO THE TEMPERATURES
BASED ON THE LATEST DATA...HOWEVER HAVE MAINTAINED THE CURRENT POP
SCHEME. THE BIG QUESTION REMAINS IF SIGNIFICANT SNOW IS EXPECTED WITH
THIS SYSTEM. RIGHT NOW IT APPEARS TEMPERATURES MAY BE A BIT TOO WARM
TO SUPPORT A SNOWY RETURN IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS...HOWEVER CONFIDENCE
IS NOT VERY HIGH. I WILL BE ANXIOUS TO SEE HOW THIS ALL PLAYS OUT IN
THE NEXT FEW DAYS. THE PREVIOUS DISCUSSION FOLLOWS BELOW.

A BREAK IN INCLEMENT WEATHER IS THEN EXPECTED THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT
BEFORE THE NEXT SYSTEM AFFECTS US WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. THIS LATE
WEEK SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BE A MAJOR STORM SYSTEM...BUT STILL HOLDS
A FAIR AMOUNT OF UNCERTAINTY CONCERNING ITS TRACK AND TIMING. WHILE
THE GFS SEEMS TO HAVE LATCHED ONTO A SURFACE LOW TRACK FROM THE
SOUTHERN PLAINS NE TO THE GREAT LAKES...HPC POINTS OUT THAT THE
ECMWF ENSEMBLE AND UKMET WERE NOT AS CLEAR CUT...WITH A POTENTIAL FOR
A MORE SOUTHERN DEVELOPMENT. THE 12Z OPERATIONAL ECMWF WAS
SUGGESTING A MORE SOUTHERLY DEVELOPMENT HEADING UP THE MS VALLEY WITH
A TRIPLE POINT LOW DEVELOPING OVER THE SE CONUS AND ROTATING N. WHILE
THE PROSPECT OF RAIN RATHER THAN SNOW LOOKS MUCH GREATER THAN IT DID
YESTERDAY... DUE TO THE UNCERTAINTY WILL STILL INCLUDE A SLIGHT
    CHANCE OF SNOW.

This kind of storm reminds me of snowstorms we get in March or April. This particuliar one reminds me of the one in April 1987, I think I have the year right? Roofs collapsing and trees are just crumbled to the ground.

The subfreezing snowstorms are much more fun & safer.

As of this morning, Chris was spot on!! We had about 3-4". here in this part of Berea. I'm really THANKFUL to Chris, if it wasn't for his "EARLY" heads up, there would've been alot of more people unprepared, including my family and friends in Pike County. I have alot of friends in Mingo & Logan County in West Virgina, they still don't know when their power will be restored. So I'm counting my blessings on this snowstorm.

I'm THANKFUL for the NWS, but sometimes its best to have a "BUSTED" forecast, at least the people that don't have an optional HEAT solution COULD'VE had some kind of warning alot earlier then 24hrs. By that time, everything is sold out!!

As far as the Christmas storm and my thoughts at this time, I HOPE it either rains or snows, the ground temps may come to "HAUNT" us, Let's either pray for rain or snow, because if the ARTIC AIR isn't here when it gets here, we are gonna see a repeat of Janurary icestorm! I HOPE I'm WRONG!!!
