Merry Christmas Eve

Good Thursday and Merry Christmas Eve to one and all. We are rolling into our Holiday with a mega storm that is pounding  a whole lot of the country. This will produce a headline grabbing blizzard across the plains into the western Great Lakes. This storm is going to have a big impact on our weather as well with high winds and rain this evening into Christmas Morning. That will be followed by a change to much colder  air for the weekend and the chance for some snow on the ground.

This storm to our west is awesome looking on the models...

Christmas Evening

That storm REALLY wraps up quite nicely just to our west. What does that mean for us?

1. Winds are going to increase around here later today into our Christmas morning. Gusts to 35-40mph will be possible.

2. Rain will increase from west to east later today and really crank up tonight into Christmas Morning. Locally heavy downpours will be likely.

3. Temps will climb well into the 40s to near 50 this evening into the overnight before crashing into the 30s from west to east Christmas afternoon and evening.

4. Some evening snow showers and flurries will be possible.

Travelers can track the rains into the region right here...

Once into the weekend... temps will be MUCH colder and we will see the big cutoff low across the plains move toward the Ohio Valley. This will bring weak impulses into our region meaning snow showers may become common.

GFS Sunday Morning

Beyond that... the cold settles in and the pattern threatens to go brutally cold during the first two weeks of January. All of this happens as our southern branch of the jet stream continues to produce storms. One such storm will try to fire up toward the last few days of the year!

This December across the country has already been historic and that goes for parts of this region. The rest of the winter is likely to continue this trend and will leave all of you smiling before all is said and done!!

Take care and Merry Christmas.

I will say nothing about the weather, since in regards to snow, I see nothing good to say as far as an outlook, as far as central KY is concerned.

Central KY is the Seattle of the east for winter weather Hey, wait a minute, even THEY have gotten bigger snows than us

I really can't wait to see Santa wading through the mud in his rubber boots!! I for one confess that we just don't need that much rain, but we have to take what Mother Nature gives us.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but looking at the various model runs and then reading Chris' post gets me a little confused. He says bitterly cold, Okay, to me that is any temp below 5 degrees Fahrenheit, that is bitterly cold. The model runs are in Celsius at around 0 degrees, that puts us at 32f. I know there is a day or two that it gets colder than that but to me 25 - 30 degrees f for a week or two is normal, not bitterly cold.
Now someone tell me if I am misreading the models and the 0 actually means 0 degrees f.

I just looked at one model run- the 0z GFS. After around Jan 3, the freezing line dips into Tennessee and starts going further and further south, dipping as far as southern Georgia around the 7th and staying there for a while.

I for one do not ever want to see any more snow. EVER. We have been without power since last Friday when a neighbor's tree fell on our power line. Even though the repairs were done the next day by an electrician and then inspected, we cannot get the power company to come and spend 10-15 minutes turning the power back on. We are right in the town of Hyden and they could stop on their way to or from another job. This is ridiculous. The tree fell on our retaining wall, part of our dog kennel and the upper branches were resting on the roof. It pulled the power line loose from our house and pulled our lines loose. Thus the need for the electrician. I do not think we had any damage to the roof, even though it will have to be checked by a professsional to make sure. The tree is still there, but the retaining wall and dog kennel may or may not have damage, I can't tell because of the branches still laying on part of it. We have lost all of our packed freezer full of food, and I was finally forced to buy a generator. A big expense for a widow here at Christmas time. My daughter wants to take the tree down. The neighbor who owns the tree drove right by the other night when we were trying to put the wheels on the generator and did not even stop the help. So, NO SNOW.

Billie, I hate it that you don't have any power, I know what that feels like, and it is no fun.

I hope your house is okay, and that the power company comes quickly.

The neighbor should have stopped to help, but kindness is rare sometimes. It is sad.

I'm afraid I agree with you...if snow means no power, then no snow.

It would have been nice to have a White Christmas, but really, I don't need snow falling on a specific day to enjoy this time any more than I already will. Besides, to have already seen as much snow as I have this winter is blessing enough.

      Merry Christmas, all!

I have relatives near Tulsa,OK, and about 2 hrs. ago, they were changing from Fz. Rn to Heavy, Blowing Snow...just went under a Blizzard Warning!

I wanted to say something...might sound morbid, but it IS something to seriously THINK ABOUT...?! While we here in KY ALL seem to want what they are having out there in the SW/W part of the country, we should all be thinking about what can, and DID OCCUR this afternoon near where my Aunt lives-actually, just down the road from them?!

A family (grandparents & their grandchild) were on their way to Woodland Hills Mall to shop, when a Hummer (distracted by their dog) hit an icy bridge, slammed head-on into their car, then flipped. Killed all 3 in the car, the Hum driver is in 'grave' cond. @ a Tulsa hosp...my Uncle's sister was very good friends w/ this couple, my Uncle knew them as well....my folks came upon the accident just after it happened and are obviously very shaken by it... It brought back repercussions of a while back-my best friend in HS and her parents killed in a Christmas Day night crash in '81...kind of the SAME sort of accident...?!
    It started me thinking...?!
As BAD as we would like to see THIS kind of Wx in KY...and it's poss. we MIGHT just yet..?!- let's not FORGET the most IMPORTANT things in LIFE?! You might not have heat/electricity/etc right now...(or later in the Winter?!), but, you have yourself..you have friends, family, each other...?! Isn't that what is most important?!

To Chris, Scarlett,& Wynter, to all my Bloggers & Blogette's...all such GOOD FRIENDS...
May ALL of YOU have a Wonderful, Safe, and Merry Christmas!

I hate this for that family and any other. My prayers will be with them and everyone else that is suffering. However, this could and does happen just as easily in the rain and in dry weather as well. Yes this was caused by the snow and ice, but I feel when it is time for you to go it is your time. The man upstairs knows why and when and it isn't for us to know as bad as we would like to sometimes. Once again thoughts and prayers to all. Having ran in emergency services for over 15 years I've seen these situations way to often and you just learn to pray for those involved and move on.Merry Christmas to all and I still want my snow.
