Wintry Mix Tonight
Good evening everyone. A wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow will be moving northward into the region this evening and continue overnight. Even with temps in the 40s early this evening... our dewpoints are in the teens meaning therrmometer readings will crash toward the low and mid 30s shortly after precip starts falling.
A slushy accumulation of sleet and snow will be possible across the north and east. I can see where some folks could pick up an inch or two out of this. But again... temps are likely to stay at or just above freezing so significant travel problems are not likely.
Here is the radar to track the precip...

18z has ALOT of potential, starting to show NEW hope! Is that a storm train I see?

It looks a lot like it has the potential to be a lakes cutter. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but those early runs look very similar to the ones in early December showing a huge snowstorm for the area. Only they come around to showing heavy rain with a few flurries on the backside, which indeed happened.

Light sporadic sleet at Wal-mart on Nicholasville Rd. in Lexington.

No problem here. I go to Indiana and Illinois next week, then Minnesota at the end of the month. One way or another I will see some real snow.
Who knows, maybe being de-Bubba'd for those dates will be the ticket for snow around here

Take the snowdome to Minnesota with ya! I'm sure the folks up there wouldn't mind!

Rain, sleet, and snow coming down here at my house in Pulaski County. Temp is at 38 here, airport says 39. In any event, Isaw snowflakes mixed in with the rain and some sleet. How low do we go tonight, anyone?
Another question...Chris, Bernie, anyone, given the precip is starting now, and the atmosphere will be saturated, does that give our temps a bump downward,a few degrees, or not?
Our local forecast is calling for highs in the mid 40s tomorrow. And when are temps expected to start dropping? Before dark, or after? Just curious, so I will know what I need to take care of at lunch tomorrow. Any info would be appreciated.
Reply to this
Well, since I commented about five minutes ago, temp has dropped at the airport to 37, and it is showing 35 on my back deck now.

I think this precip we are getting now was downplayed too much....if you look at the radar theres alot of precip formed and forming and someone to the east of us i believe is going to get more snow than is in their nws forecast.....only if the temps would drop 6 more degrees even here we could get some, but regardless we set at 38 and slowly falling with moderate rain and very wet snow mixed

JKL put out an 8pm update saying that some of their north east counties in their forecast area could see some snow out of this...with accumulation mostly on grassy surfaces. Due to wetbulb and Dynamic cooling...lookout NE Kentucky..you guys might get a couple inches

Any of you knowledgeable weather persons out there, please answer this question:
The models will change their minds many times on a storm that is about 9 days away, won't they?
Reply to this
yes, none of them are perfect and it's fustrating knowing the mistakes models make due to there biases repeatly. that goes for all of them gfs, euro etc.
Reply to this
Does this change the thoughts on "wave #2"..??
...
Reply to this
still a dud just snow showers with more coatings. this was handled poorly though by all of the models.
Reply to this
Thanks, Mitch. I thought that was true, and the models are not showing the storm on the 7th like they were before.
Maybe the day before the models will be more accurate.

We just got home in London about an hour ago and we saw 5 or 6 accidents on I-75 just in Laurel County. I-75 was very slick in some places. On the scanner they are talking about working so many wrecks that unless there are wrecks with injuries to let the people involved fill out personal accident reports.
