Winter Storm Warnings Expand
Good evening everyone. I wanted to drop by for a quick update to show you how the Winter Storm Warnings have now expanded to include much of the state though Wednesday. The southern counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory during the dame time. Here is the updated map...

Snow will be breaking out from southwest to northeast later this evening into the overnight and will become mixed with some ice across the south. You can track this mess in here with regional radar...

Here are the headlines of this thing...
- Snow develops overnight with some ice possible by morning across the south. This will be a high impact event for the morning commute.
- My snow map from my last update for late tonight and early Tuesday remains unchanged.
- Temps will try to go above freezing for a few hours in most of the area... this would mean a switch to some freezing rain or light rain will take place... especially across the south and east. The deepest moisture may already be over by this time.
- Arctic front to slam in here Tuesday evening. Temps will drop by more than 10-15 degrees in just a few hours as any rains go back to snow.
- Snows will move back in Tuesday night and last through Wednesday night. High snow ratios will be with us meaning we maximize the amount of precip that falls. Several inches of snow will fall during this time.
- Winds will crank up to 30-35mph into Wednesday creating blowing and drifting snows. Wind chills will be near 0.
Overall... this is a high impact winter storm that will hit the region over the next few days. I will have more updates as needed later this evening so check back. Take care.

I'm game! Looks like Frankfort might finally get some snow, haha we'll see.

looks like chris is right about the precip moving in from the southwest, i'm just not sure why the nws thinks that northern ky will get more when the heavy snow is moving in from the sw and all i have in c-ville is a winter weather advisory for 1-2 inches but on the track the snow is taking we are in the bullseye sooo hmmm guess its just an all around confusing setup for even the pro's this go around

I am so ready for snow here in Frankfort....will it happen or should I say how much?? I am excited to have some snow.

Is it safe to say our local NWS offices worship the operational GFS? That's the only conclusion to which I can come after seeing them use it even though it's the only model that predicts a short changeover in Louisville.
Also, does anyone else get the sense precipatation is looking a little more ragged than thought?
Reply to this
The system as over KY now, what else to expect
Reply to this
The precip isn't expected to start until much later... what you see now is a bonus moistening things up for us.
I feel better about this snow than any other in a while. Even if it's just 3-4", especially if it's good sticky snow so I can build a good snowman with my kids before they're old enough to have their own kids.

CRAZY, the stuff is moving from the SW, but the system still arches around a bunch of us after already snowing on people to the south. Hugging the river and instead of a dome, looks like a profile of Darth Helmet's helmet.
Not seeing how the system is hugging this way for the warning unless it is biased by the river. That suggests low altitude bias, which if correct, is certainly not "nICE" for some of us.
Perhaps the river is the main player, since it was 30 in south Lexington, but went up to 34 degrees when I crossed the river. Literally no change until passing south on Clays Ferry bridge.
Reply to this
Wow, Chris! What a map! I only wish that we here in the WWA did not have such a possibility of the dreaded "I" word. NOT looking forward to that...at all.
Now, if we could get the snow line to work farther south, well.....that would be alright.
Those of you who are in line for the snow, enjoy! Hopefully we will get in on it sometime in the near future.....I mean, one snow over 3 inches in 10 years does NOT break the snow drought!
Chris, I will be keeping an eye on the blog for your updates.

Seems kind of warm for snow, unless HEAVY like what Tennessee and Mississippi got

Is this system going to be mostly ice for Madison County? I hope not. I want snow, not ice. Is it a possible that it is all snow for us.
Reply to this
Just like the last system, I am having doubts now about the set-up. We are in the 30's now, so how does the temps DROP as the system moves this way? They usually go UP and not down. Seems we needed to be in the 20's for snow to be the main issue.
Please correct my logic here.
BTW, in S Lexington it was 30 degrees and went up to 34 degrees as soon crossed Clays Ferry bridge. That may explain why the warnings border looks like Darth Helmet's helmet
It is now 32 in Lexington and 36 in north Richmond. Snow with this temperature trend?

There lies the catch 22. It has to come down frozen before that happens. YOU know that Rolo
Reply to this
No, it doesn't always have to start off as frozen precip. We've seen snowstorms that have started off as rain, then the temp. drops and changes to snow. Dynamic cooling, evap. cooling, etc...it can start off as either and still cool things down.

To warm for snow and ice down here in southeast ky...temp. is 37* here in Barbourville. Precip (verga) moving into the area is showing up as rain on radar...so....I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow night when the artic front blows through...UNLESS we gets some evaporational cooling, but I don't much expect that as precip. is to go over to rain anyways...
SO all you folks that do get snow, I hope you get alot of it...LORD KNOWS KENTUCKIANS ARE WELL OVERDO!!!!

verga now in Bowling Green the rain/snow line still over southern tenn. I updated my forecast a little while ago basic thinking is 3-6 Lexington metro and north of 1-64 as well as western ky where it will be all snow. with decreasing amounts further south and east where rain mixes in. one thing to note is looking at BUFKIT today the upper levels are fine it's just near the surface which is expected to be near 32 for most locations, a degree or two either direction could make all the difference even lex is very close to the threshold.
Reply to this
If that's verga in bowling green, that leaves me feeling like this may not bode well for ctrl ky, as I've already watched the radar show a swath over us that hasn't hit the ground.

What's really the kicker is that JKL mentions placing more counties under a WSW tomorrow night because of upslope conditions. Problem is, Laurel/Pulaski are always on the western edge of any decent upslope snows. If anything we'll get an inch or two of fluffy snow while points east of Manchester get drilled.
Reply to this
Might be different on some other radars but from the ones I've seen, the leading edge on the southern side has been showing up as rain as it crossed through TN too, but then as things continued and the temps cooled with the precip, it changed over to snow.

I remember one time in like 1996 or 1998 when we got alot of snow and we couldnt get out of the house for like 3 weeks. We ended up eating one of the pet rabbits food we were so hungry. We didnt want to eat the rabbit because he was a member of the family in a way. Two weeks later a wild coyote attacked the rabbit as he was hanging out in the front yard. Now we al kinda luagh and agree that we shoulda eaten that rabbit. Nothin like a good snowstorm.

Actually, there are several trained mets that come over here and post. We've even had a couple of NWS employees post quite a bit. I know Shane is a Met for a TV station in Southern WV. Mitch and WXman also do a good job in forecasting, but not sure if they studied it or just love weather. Fact is, weather is a sophisticated thing to forecast, but when you do it from sun up til sun down, you don't have to go to school to learn the ins and outs. I for one applaud these guys with their own blogs cuz I know they love weather just as much as I do.
