Tracking The Rain/Snow Line
Good Tuesday everyone. Phase one of our winter storm is well underway with some of everything falling from the sky across the state to start the day out. This system is behaving very well so far with things playing out about like we expected in terms of the precipitation types and placement.
The big deal of the day will be to track the rain/snow line as it works to the north. That same line is carrying a period of freezing rain with it and that can cause a lot of headaches. So far... snows have been heaviest across the north with the south seeing a mix to rain. Above freezing temps will continue to slowly lift northward this morning as the snows make the transition to some light rains by late morning and early afternoon. There is a cutoff to just how far north and west the rain line can get. Odds favor areas along and east of a line Maysville to Lexington to Bowling Green mixing with or changing over to rain for a time today. To the west of that line... snows will likely continue and this is the area that can get several more inches today. You can track the line here...

Please keep in mind that the radar is only showing where it "thinks" the various forms of precipitation are falling.
Another helpful tool today will be the near real time temps from Kentucky Mesonet...

For some actual ground truth... I have a series of weather cams for you to check out from different points across the state...

Harrodsburg

I-64 Jefferson/Shelby Line

Louisville

Ashland

I-75 Northern Ky Near Covington

What happens from this point forward? Here is your breakdown...
- A big time arctic front moves quickly eastward across the state this afternoon into the evening. This will change the rain back to snow pretty quickly.
- Snows will increase Tuesday night into Wednesday with a widespread 2-4 inches of additional snow to fall. Higher amounts will be possible in some areas...especially across the higher elevations of southeastern Kentucky.
- Temps will Plummet behind the front. Readings will drop 15 degrees in just a few hours and will wind up in the teens by late evening. Winds will gust to 30-35mph creating wind chills dipping below 0 at times. The same winds will also creating blowing and drifting snows.
- The weather here Wednesday will just be flat out wicked!
- Snow showers and flurries should hang tough all the way into Thursday morning.
The overall weather pattern for the next few weeks will feature VERY cold temps with periodic snow chances. The snow that falls over the next few days has a great shot at still being on the ground in many places a week or two from now. The problem is... you may not see it because it gets covered up by new snows. Some snow showers and flurries will be possible later Friday and Saturday with the potential for a system to dive in here with accumulating snows Sunday and Monday...

We're snow covered here now. Just had to get up and take a peek. Noticed that Fayette is out tomorrow....waiting for others to follow suit. I'll probably get the the automated call right in the middle of a great sleep!

Three inches of funky wet snow patted down by cold rain. Bleh. Still better than ice or 40-50" of snow like our NE friends are experiencing. With the artic air coming, they could be in a world of hurt for at least a weak. Truly historic and dangerous for them.
Such as snow here with already weak structures from last year would be "game over" for many areas here and people trying to stay warm.
That is my positive spin for our funky fence result for this system. Now the fun beigns with temps going down today and the rain patted snow and saturated ground. This evening and tomorrow morning will be a challenge for anyone driving.
Is the 2" to 4" for the general area, or for north and east KY?

Wondering if Laurel County will get any snow tonight. When I look at the radar map it looks like the moisture will be gone before the cold air makes it here. Will the moisture be coming from somewhere else not showing up on the map yet? The NWS has Laurel County under a Winter Weather Advisory for 2-5 inches of snow starting at 7pm tonight but their local forcast isn't giving any snow for tonight. Would appreciate anybodys thoughts on this. Thanks

Back end of snow is now in Louisville. Seen were the snow has turned to flurries west of Louisville. I guess the front should be through central Kentucky by 1pm. The snow that’s survives the rain will be the only snow for most people. SEKY will work in some good upslope, I seen were some higher elevations could get 8-10, but that will be tonight and tomorrow.

Reply to this
Yeh, doesn't look like we get any more snow under the dome. The radar looked great, thought it would move back in from the west - yeah right! As can be seen, as soon as the cold air returns - the precipitation ends! Been at 33°F and rain for HOURS now in the LEX area, while Louisville and Cincinnati have been getting hammered with the snow. The dome does exist, and is centered right over the LEX are, and it cannot be argued otherwise!
Reply to this
Looks like the warm air is going way farther norht and lasting longer that expected (that is a surprise?). The warm air also draws the moisture up quicker, so the longer it lasts, the moisture left decreases at an accelerated rate.

Nothing mysterious about it, Bubba - we all know the simple formula: 33° and above = wet, 32° and below = dry. What is a mystery to me is what has caused this freak of nature for the past 12 years!

Family in Alexander KY, which is a few miles from FT. Thomas says they have about 5 or 6. Family in Cincinnati reports about 5-6. Must have been a very small area that made it to double digits.

do they measure on a snowboard and clear it by the hour or two? this was a wet snow, in fact its 32 now with some snow that is melting as it hits the car or plowed side walks, and i never made it to double digits i got 7.8 inches i have 12 inches on the ground though yes

Here is a summary map from the NWS for the Northern Kentucky and Southern Ohio areas. News also reports 5 for these areas as well. I know snow is exciting but exaggeration is frowned upon, its okay to be honest.

Okay now I know you are exaggerating, when I went home to Cincinnati this past weekend there was only about two inches on the ground by the time I left. So unless this storm put down 10 inches, there is no way you are at a foot. Called home and all around the area the greatest amount I could find today was five inches from this storm. Meaning they have 6-7 inches on the ground. Maybe you need to go check the ruler again. Plus do you know how to properly measure snow. You don’t just flop a ruler in a grassy area.

Listen I am not there, if you say you got that much then fine. But no one else from that area is reporting anything close to those numbers.
