Summer Pattern Bringing More Storms

Good Thursday everyone. We continue to bask in a summertime pattern across the bluegrass state. Temps on Wednesday hit the 90 degree mark in some spots and that’s a feat that doesn’t happen that often in early May. The warm temps remain and now we say a big welcome back to the threat for thunderstorms. We missed you while you were away for one whole day.

A nice moisture plume extends northward out of the Gulf of Mexico into the Tennessee Valley today. This will edge a little farther northward in time and should bring some scattered thunderstorm action to the bluegrass state. A strong storm can’t be ruled out and there is plenty of juice to produce heavy rains. Temps should held down some compared to Wednesday because of the scattered stuff.

Friday and Saturday are very important days as we have the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby taking center stage. The weather both days looks similar with temps in the 80s and the threat for scattered showers and thunderstorms. A few strong boomers will be possible during this time.

The warm air and storm threat should hang tough into early next week. That’s when some of the models begin to show a cooler change across much of the country. You can see this showing up on the European Model…

The GFS Ensembles show much different look from the next 7 days to the following 7 day period…

It has been very hard for any one temperature pattern to completely set up shop around here this spring. Odds favor that balancing act to continue into the upcoming summer months.

Have a great Thursday and take care.

Turning Up The Derby Week Heat

Good Wednesday everyone. The heat is kicking into high gear out there today and that’s a sign of things to come as we roll into Kentucky Derby weekend. Temperatures will be more typical of what we would see during the summer months than the first week of May. This is also a pattern ripe for occasional rounds of thunderstorms.

In the short-term… the heat is on. Readings today will soar into the middle and upper 80s across the state. There will be a slight chance for a thunderstorm or two.

Those hot temps will hang tough into Thursday and right on into Kentucky Oaks Friday and Kentucky Derby Saturday. Any one area can flirt with 90 degrees on any given day. Weren’t we just talking about freezing temps last week?

The pattern we’re is one that should produce plenty of thunderstorm action. Look at the GFS rainfall forecast through the coming weekend…

You can even see how some juice from the Gulf of Mexico tries to pump into our region. Let’s expand that rain forecast out a bit. Here’s the rain forecast for the next two weeks…

April was a fairly quiet severe weather month so May looks to try to make up for lost time.

Have a wonderful Wednesday and take care.
