Thursday Evening Update

Good evening, everyone. Rounds of snow have been pressing across the state all day, and another round is sweeping in this evening. This will put down additional accumulations of an inch or two with another 2″-3″ possible in the southeast by morning.

Roads will be slick and, in many cases, snow covered. Your tracking tools in a bit.

Another sneaky snow system may impact parts of the state on Friday. Check out the Friday into Friday evening snow forecast from the NAM…

A BIG snowstorm is going to impact areas just to our south and east Friday night and Saturday. This is likely to brush far southeastern Kentucky with some accumulating snows. Here are the numbers from just that event…

My goodness… that is sooooooooo close!!!

The pattern next week looks active. We get a sharp front in here Tuesday night with rain to a mix…

Thursday Snow Update

Good afternoon, everyone. The first round of snow was a big time overachiever across parts of the region. This dropped a good 2″-3″ across parts of the southeast, with more to come for the entire region.

I mentioned the snows coming in waves and that still looks to be the case. The southwestern part of the state gets the least in all this, but that was the forecast all along.

With these additional waves coming in through tonight, most (not all) areas should hit the snow range we have been talking about. Areas in southeastern Kentucky are now very likely to pick up totals greater than 4″ before all is said and done. That’s actually warning criteria snow.

What about the next system developing across the south Friday into Saturday? This continues to edge a bit farther west and north, which is why I have never written this thing off. The current model consensus is for some additional accumulations across southeastern Kentucky.

This is the NAM 24 hour snowfall forecast from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon…

The NAM then says Hello, east coast…

Back here in Kentucky, bitterly cold air will dominate the weekend forecast with high teens and low 20s by day and single digit lows at night. There is a slight chance for a snow shower or flurry on Sunday as the flow is off the Great Lakes for a time.

Here are the tracking toys of the day…

Thursday Snow Tracker

Good Thursday, everyone. We have waves of light to moderate snow pushing across the state today into early Saturday. This will leave behind the first widespread snowfall of the season, causing travel issues along the way. While this isn’t a big snow by any means, it will have a decent impact throughout the entire region.

Some quick highlights:

  • Today’s snow comes at us in waves, impacting different parts of the state at different times.
  • The first wave arrives this morning impacting the northern two-thirds of the state. The south and southeast has to wait a little bit for the snow to arrive.
  • The next wave fires up this afternoon and impacts much of the state through the evening.
  • Another band of light snow then develops across the central and east later this evening into the wee hours of Friday morning.
  • Moral of the story, all the snow does not come at once and you may see breaks in the radar between each wave.
  • How much will fall? This won’t be a perfect snow forecast (no such thing), but here’s my best stab at the totals into Friday morning…

winter-5

  • Roads will become slick and a few may be snow covered at times. Delays and cancellations should be plentiful today and Friday.
  • The southern storm system may swipe southeastern Kentucky with some snow early Saturday. It’s a close call either way.
  • Bitterly cold air moves in for the weekend with highs from Friday through Sunday in the upper teens and low 20s. Overnight lows drop into the single digits, with an outside shot for some of the traditional cold spots seeing zero or a touch below.

We see a brief temp spike early next week, but that could be followed by a big drop and more winter weather. Here’s the European for Tuesday and Wednesday…

The Canadian is similar with another system following that up…

Let’s get back to today’s system and track the light snowfall across the region…
