Friday Evening Update

Good evening, everyone. Our weekend is off and running on a very cold note across the bluegrass state with readings heading into the teens tonight. The upcoming weather is about to take a walk on the wild side with a big storm moving in here early next week.

The short-term forecast has no changes with a mix of sun and clouds on Saturday and highs in the upper 30s and low 40s. The Super Bowl Sunday system zips in and out with just some very light stuff early in the day and temps warming deep into the 40s.

The storm system coming early next week is a big time system that can bring some wild stuff our way. Check this bad boy out…

That, my friends, is a major wind maker for our region and much of the eastern half of the country. Rain increases on Monday with thunderstorms joining the party Monday night and Tuesday. We will need to be on guard for some possible strong storms as temps surge into the 60s. Winds gusting to 40-50mph will be possible as this system develops.

Temps by Wednesday morning drop into the 20s with wraparound light snows…

That is one heck of a system and it’s what you get when you have such huge temperature gradients setting up across the country.

Can we get another system to move through here on Thursday? That’s a possibility and most models show something diving in here from the north and west…

If we look at the setup after that arctic blast, we find the models still fighting it out, but with a warmer look…

While that makes me happy, I’m telling you guys, we are not going to get to true spring without a pretty harsh period of winter. It’s just a question of when. I would rather it be sooner rather than later. Your friendly weather dude is all about some spring. 😉

Have a great evening and take care.

Eyeing A Busy Setup

Good Friday, everyone. The weather out there for the next few days is pretty tranquil, but things are going to take off in a hurry once past the weekend. That’s when a big storm system brings about a nice battle between spring and summer, and that means some fun weather across Kentucky.

Let’s start with today and roll forward. A weak system is bringing some clouds our way and those clouds can spit out a flurry or two. Temps will be colder with near freezing in the north and low 40s in the far south.

Saturday will feature clouds on the increase with temps heading toward 40 for many, with warmer readings south and west. This is ahead of a fast-moving system set to bring some light mix in here by Sunday morning…

Temperatures by Monday will warm into the 50s as showers really begin to increase. This is ahead of a big storm system rolling our way for Tuesday and Wednesday. This is basically a storm that will bring a surge of spring followed by a blast of winter… all within a 24 hour period.

The GFS shows a wind-driven rain and thunderstorm event with a 30 degree+ drop in temps and some wraparound snowflakes from Tuesday into Wednesday…

The model then follows that up with another potent system that has much more of a winter storm look for Thursday…

Obviously, that’s a little farther south than earlier runs, but it’s still there on the model. Whether or not that’s a real system is entirely up for debate. 🙂

I will update things later today. Make it a good one and take care.
