Winter Storm Update

Good afternoon, everyone. Our Winter storm continues to put down significant snows across parts of the state. Our corridor of heavy snow is setting up in the areas we have been highlighting for the past several days.

In the overall scheme of things, the forecast from yesterday is working out very well…

Some areas in the highest range will fall into the “locally higher” range, meaning this is our third 6″+ snowstorm in less than 2 weeks. I will not be surprised to see another double digit snowfall report. That’s historic for anytime of year, let alone the middle of March.

I’m still amazed at the lack of the Winter Storm Warning deeper into southeastern Kentucky, and the “jump” in the advisory in southwestern West Virginia…

Sigh.

We continue to be on guard for the possibility of local high water issues. Some areas may push 2″ of rain today, so watch the creeks and streams. Some thunder is even possible today.

Oh and it’s 70 degrees in far western Kentucky.

As we look down the weather road, temps rebound into the first half of next week, with showers and a few storms possible. I’m not liking the looks of the setup from late week into Easter Weekend. The upper levels are primed to develop another big storm system for our region, that could bring additional winter weather. Watch this trough dig in and take on a negative tilt…

The models are just now beginning to see the storm system developing from that…

Ugh. I will touch more on that late tonight. Until then, keep the snow reports coming and follow along with your tracking toys…

Tracking Heavy Rain and A Heavy Snow

Good Saturday, everyone. Another winter storm is rolling across the bluegrass state, bringing a narrow swath of heavy snow for some, and heavy rain for much of the state. As I’ve mentioned, this is our third winter storm to hit the state in less than 2 weeks. This March will go down as one of the snowiest on record for many Kentucky cities.

Here are a few quick thoughts about today’s system:

  • We are walking a very fine line between heavy snow and no snow. That line sets up right on top of the Lexington metro. The best chance for snow is north and northeast from there.
  • For those folks living near the transition line, don’t @ me if the precipitation goes against whichever form you want. 🙂
  • For areas getting in on the heavy snow swath, several slushy inches may fall.
  • Heavy rain will be noted across the rest of the state, with some 1″-2″ amounts. Watch for a few local high water issues to develop.

Before we get to the tracking tools, let’s talk a bit about the pattern ahead. Next week turns milder, but stormier. We will need to be on guard for heavy rains and a few strong storms.

The pattern threatens to turn cold again for Easter Weekend, with the cold hanging tough into early April. This is a cold look as far as the GFS Ensembles can see…

That’s just ugly.

Speaking of ugly, I will update today’s ugly weather a little later. Until then, let’s track everything going on with it…
