Monday Evening Thoughts

Good evening, folks. Today has been one of those brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr kind of days across our region as gusty winds combine with frigid temps to make it feel like the heart of winter. Throw in some snow showers and flurries and November continues to have Old Man Winter’s signature all over it.

Snow showers continue to develop on a northwesterly wind this evening. A few of those will continue into Tuesday across the east, especially. Watch how this shows up on the NAM…

Coatings show up for several areas, with some local 1″ amounts possible if you get in under repeat snow shower action. With temps dropping into the low 20s, slick spots will develop on area roads.

Wind chills on Tuesday stay in the teens as highs stay in the upper 20s. That’s another brrrrrrrrrrrrr of a day. 🙂

The next system moves in on Thursday as the cold air starts to pull out of town. The leading edge of light rain may very well be in the form of sleet for a few hours.

From there, rounds of heavy rain and high winds target our region from Friday through the weekend…

Rainfall numbers of 1″-2″ are likely during this time. Winds will also be a major player and may cause issues. Those gusts may reach 40-50mph once again…

After that system rolls through, we start to make the transition into a very wintry look for next week. Arctic cold dives into our region and may bring an increase in snow chances…

Speaking of winter, let’s get you back to tracking the current blast…

Monday Afternoon Update

Good afternoon, everyone. I wanted to drop by for a very quick update on the blast of winter rolling across the state to start the week. Frigid northwesterly winds are howling as snow showers continue to increase. This action will wind up causing some slick spots later tonight.

Watch how the strong northwesterly wind flow keeps snow showers developing through Tuesday for many, and into Wednesday AM across the southeast…

The models continue to spit out light accumulations…

NAM

Canadian

Even the GFS is FINALLY seeing the wraparound snow showers…

Those models match up with the map I put out last night…

As mentioned, some slick travel may develop after dark and carry us into Tuesday. It doesn’t take a lot of snow to cause slick spots when temps drop into the low and middle 20s like they will tonight. Highs on Tuesday may stay in the 20s for the central and east. Wind chills will be rather brutal by November standards.

The serious cold lifts out by Thursday as a weak system moves in. We are on guard for some sleet or freezing rain on the leading edge of this…

That will be followed by a big wind and rain maker this weekend as temps rebound for a few days. After that… Look out. A very harsh winter pattern will try to take shape next week and take us through the middle of December.

I will have the latest on the cold and snow coming up at 4pm on WKYT-TV. I will also throw you an update later this evening. Until then, here are your tracking tools…

Snow Showers and Frigid Temps Move In

Good Monday, everybody. Old Man Winter is back in the bluegrass state today as snow showers combine with frigid winds to produce a mid winter’s day. As a matter of fact, the next few days will feel like the heart of wintertime as our wintry November keeps rolling.

Cold air is pouring into the state early today with rain changing to snow showers from west to east. Gusty winds of 40mph will be possible early, but those numbers come down as the day wears on.

Northwesterly winds will create fairly widespread snow showers this afternoon through tonight across central and eastern Kentucky. With temps in the 20s, slick roads may cause a few travel issues from time to time. We could see a few school delays or cancellations Tuesday morning.

Snow showers and flurries will likely continue  across the east through Tuesday.

Light accumulations are a good bet during today into Tuesday. The very nature of snow showers make it difficult to pinpoint who can pick up just a little coating to those who can get an inch or so of snow. Here’s a general light snowfall forecast…

The models show how they are trying to hot spot an inch or two of snow, with lighter amounts in between…

Hi Res NAM

NAM

In addition to the snow showers, the cold temps and gusty winds are a force to be reckoned with. Temps drop into the low 30s today and hold steady, then drop into the low and middle 20s overnight. Highs on Tuesday may not get above 30 in areas of central and eastern Kentucky. Throw the winds into the mix and it gets frigid…

Those are the wind chill numbers through Wednesday morning. Those are some crazy wind chill digits for November.

The cold lifts out later this week into the weekend as a couple of big rain makers roll in from the southwest. Temps bounce back for a few days, but next week will see the return of a very wintry pattern that can grow much colder than what we are seeing now.

I will have updates later today. Until then, I have your snow shower tracking tools…
