Severe Weather and High Winds Ahead

Good evening, folks. It continues to be full steam ahead into a major wind event, with the increasing potential for severe storms on Saturday. All of this is coming from our potent storm system working into the Mississippi Valley right now.

Western Kentucky is first up for the potential for high winds, flooding and severe storms. The SPC continues to highlight the west with a severe threat this evening…

As expected, we are seeing the SPC increase the severe threat across Kentucky for Saturday…

Don’t be surprised to see further upgrades to that later tonight and early Saturday.

Check out this massive line of storms that works across Kentucky and points south…

Damaging winds continue to be the main thing to watch for. Gusts of 60mph or greater may show up…

In addition to the high winds, there’s also a small tornado risk showing up with our line of storms. Also, local flash flooding may accompany this line as it drops a quick inch or two of rain.

We keep seeing the signal for a major pattern change starting late next week, then becoming fully established next weekend and beyond…

Let’s get back to where we are today. I have you all set to track the action across the region, including with our exclusive interactive radar…

Friday Afternoon Update

Good afternoon, everyone. It’s a windy and mild day as our potent storm system inches closer to the region. Rounds of showers and storms are targeting western Kentucky, bringing the threat for severe storms. As we head into Saturday, the threat for severe storms moves eastward across the state.

The Storm Prediction Center continues to highlight far western Kentucky for the increasing severe risk later today…

The SPC now includes much of the state in the low-end severe risk for Saturday, but this may very well be upgraded…

Damaging winds will be the main threat from a line of storms working from west to east. High winds will be a problem outside of any storms, through, so keep that in mind.

Models continue to suggest 50mph or greater gusts, with the new NAM showing lots of 60mph+ gusts…

In addition to the high wind potential, flooding and flash flooding will be possible across areas of western Kentucky. As the line of storms moves east, local flash flooding issues may develop as storms dump a quick 1″-2″ of rain.

I will have the very latest on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm then again on KWC later this evening. Until then, here are your storm tracking tools…

Potent Storm Moves Closer

Good Friday, everyone. It’s a windy and sometimes stormy day taking shape, but this is the appetizer to the main course arriving Saturday. That’s when strong storms, high winds and record highs take center stage across the region.

Winds today may reach 40mph at times with a few scattered showers and storms. The greatest risk will be across the western half of the state. That’s also the area most at risk for some flooding issues to develop. In addition to that, there’s the low end risk for severe storms across the west…

Temps today are in the 60s for many and could challenge a few records.

Record highs will fall on Saturday as temps reach 70-75 degrees for many of us. Wow! Southwest winds are going to routinely gust between 40 and 50mph in the afternoon and evening. Throw in a line of thunderstorms and you can get gusts approaching 60mph or higher…

Here’s what that line of thunderstorms looks like on the HI Res NAM…

Wind damage will be the primary thing to watch for, obviously. Here’s the Saturday Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…

I will have updates later today, so check back. Until then, I leave you with your storm tracking tools…
