Breaking Down The Setup

Good evening, folks. Dreary weather continues across the bluegrass state as much colder air filters in from the northwest. This air will grow colder into the coming days with the chance for a few flakes in the south and southeast. As we look farther down the road, there’s a winter look developing as we end February and begin March.

Let’s start with the evening rain that continues to show up a little heavier in the south and southeast…

Wednesday features a mix of clouds and sun with temps in the 40s.

As far as the Thursday southern system, the NAM continues to bring a little light snow into the far south and southeast…

The GFS also brings light snow into the southeast…

The Euro is just south of the state…

After a cold and dry few days, temps come up closer to normal by Saturday as we wait on the next system to arrive on Sunday. This is the first of two systems showing up as a winter looking pattern tries to settle in. The Euro has a bit of a mix with the first one and some snow with the second…

The Canadian agrees…

As the President of #teamspring, I do not like the looks of the pattern through the first half of March. The Ensembles are showing up with some frigid temps…

The snow map through the first few days of March…

You knew this was going to happen!!!

Enjoy your evening and take care.

Tuesday Afternoon Thoughts

Good afternoon, folks. It’s a wet and dreary day across the Commonwealth, but that’s really nothing new to us. As our cold front pushes through later today, the rain will slowly end and temps start to fall. From there, it’s all about watching a close call for snowfall across the south and southeast.

Today’s rains are actually a little heavier than I thought and a few areas may see another 1″ of water falling from the sky. You will see this begin to diminish from the northwest this afternoon and evening. Here are your radars to help you out…

Wednesday is a colder day that may start with a touch of rain and snow lingering across the far southeast. Skies become partly sunny.

This front then slows down to our south as a wave of low pressure works from west to east along it. Can this throw some snow into southern and, especially, southeastern Kentucky? That’s the door I’ve been leaving open for a while now and we have several models suggesting this as a possibility.

The NAM is the most aggressive…

The Canadian is a miss…

The GFS is stuck in the middle, but is more similar to the NAM…

It will be interesting to see what the Euro is thinking and then watch for other model trends later today. I will do just that on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm then again on KWC this evening.

Make it a good one and take care.

Rain Before A Close Call With Winter

Good Tuesday, everyone. Our cold front is working into the region today, bringing gusty showers with it. As colder air comes in behind this, we start to focus on the possibility of a second system brushing the state later this week. This is the same one I’ve been saying not to shut the door on.

As always, let us start with today and roll forward. Our front is slowly working into the region, bringing showers with it. Winds are gusty with temps in the 50s. Here are your radars to follow the showers…

Colder winds blow in behind this with temps in the 20s to start with 40s for afternoon highs on Wednesday.

The same front moving through today will slow down to our south over the next few days. That’s when a wave of low pressure develops along the front and rolls eastward. Where this exactly happens will determine if southern and southeastern Kentucky can get in on some winter weather.

The models continue to skirt far southern and southeastern Kentucky with a little action…

A couple of systems will need to be watched from late this weekend into early next week.

The setup to end February and begin March continues to look like a cold one. This isn’t a good look for spring lovers…

Ugh!

I will have updates late today. Make it a good one and take care.
