Good Sunday, everyone. Much needed rain is likely to fall across the bluegrass state over the next few days. The trade off may come in the form of a few strong or severe storms. What follows the storms will be fall or winter looking jet stream that delivers the threat of record cold to much of the country.
Scattered storms are possible through today, but a line of big boomers may move in from the northwest this afternoon and evening. These may be severe and I will have your tracking tools in a bit.
The threat for showers and storms will increase Monday into early Tuesday as our cold pattern sweeps in. Here’s the European Model…
This provides us with a very good chance for another round of strong and severe storms Monday. It also gives us a better than even shot at widespread, beneficial rains.
Check out the wintertime look to the mid-week pattern…
Record or near record cold is likely across Kentucky and much of the plains states and east. I was looking at some of the records lows for this timeframe and they match up with a couple of other years that featured developing weak to moderate el ninos… 1976 and 2009.
Watch for a possible piece of upper level energy swinging in behind this by the end of the week into next weekend. The European Model shows this…
I leave you with the storm tracking tools…

Make it a great Sunday and take care.
Thanks Chris. We could certainly use some good rain in Pulaski county, at least the central and southern parts of it. Funny how you can get in the car and goo about 5 miles and see where it has rained. We finally mowed yesterday because the weeds grow whether it’s dry or not. But it won’t get mowed again until we get some rain. Here is hoping we all get some good rain without it having to get too severe. Have a great Sunday everyone! Thanks again Chris.
Not looking forward to the cooler temperatures at all.
??? Nothing like a cool morning with coffee on my deck, and in the middle of summer? Yes please
Yes I enjoy cooler days so I can sit outside with a nice cigar and a good drink. 🙂
Amen and amen and amen, Vinny
I could have written that LOL Enjoy !!
Sorry all you hot weather fans, but this ‘ole lady loves those cooler temps!! Hot or cold though we need that rain badly! Like others our lawn is toast!!
Patty, these hot, constantly sunny days remind of living in South Florida and (I know this will bother some) it got old for me. I prefer variety. I recognize that many LOVE these kind of days and more power to you. Personally, give me low 70 to mid 70’s and some rainy days, along with sunshine. It got to me so much that I had to move away from Lauderdale after 18 months. Loved the beaches, seafood etc but not the weather.
At any rate, just my rant. Thanks for all you do Chris.
Thanks for the reply and support Scott. Give me Autumn any day!
I know we need the rain but no severe weather . Thank you Chris for all you do to keep us safe.
Yep – I will take cool temps. Love cold compared to hot…….
Heavy rain threat

I like upper 70s to low 80s and 50s in morning.
Wind picking up in Berea… Chris posted a Dead or Alive song previously, we suggest today’s song is http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MsW8rXPcnM0&feature=kp
Sure do hope we get rain & cooler temps. However, we probably won’t get that without some storms. Here’s hoping that the storms aren’t severe and that everyone stays safe. Thanks Chris for the tracking tools. I’ll be following your updated forecasts.
Storms are bubbling up nicely. Watch about to be issued for west ky aswell.
Hi Ryan. Hope things are progressing as you prepare to start your weather studies at Mississippi State.
Yes, the Storm Prediction Center still has damaging winds as the threat with the highest risk, but the threat of large hail has been raised a bit per the latest SPC update. A rather low – if not zero – threat of an isolated twister or two.
This has been mentioned before, but there has never been any tornado fatalities during the month of July in Kentucky and Tennessee…….at least in recorded history that is. So the twister threat for our area this time of year is low anyway – if not zero.
But we all still have to watch out for other summer risks, such as lightning strikes (if you can hear thunder, you can be stuck by lightning), flash flooding (turn around, don’t drown), damaging winds toppling large trees onto cars and homes, not to mention heat related health risks.
Well, things remain relatively quiet in the west; no watch there, at least so far. The SPC had given a 40% chance of a watch being issued in the west.
But as CB touched on, we still have the risk of storms both tonight and tomorrow.
Storms are diminishing near the river as the air is still dry in the metro.
95 in Louisville not sure of the heat index but im sure its over 100. Hottest day of the summer so far. Thank God it will be short lived.
Make that 97 degrees in Louisville officially.
My unofficial thermometer has 98 degrees. This hot and dry wind is doing a number on the trees and plants. It’s by far the worst day of summer so far.
97 degrees, this is a prime example of what very little rain and super dry ground will cause.
IS IT GOIN TO RAIN OR NOT IN LOUISVILLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. $&@/
One can only hope
I do not like really intense heat so I am constantly reminding myself to appreciate the warmth after such a long winter. The upcoming days with the 70s temps are certainly looking good to me.
We do need the rain badly. Was walking in my yard earlier and it had a crunching sound from being so dry.
A break from high electric bills would have been nice but that is just not happening for me this year. The way my windows are they don’t allow much breeze even when its cooler so I have to run the AC due to health issues even on those days.Goodness knows I am not looking forward to the heating bills if this long, cold, winter happens as many are predicting. But at least we have time to prepare if we are told early.
But its weather so it will change daily and all we can do is make the best of whatever it happens to be.Regardless we all have much to be thankful for.
My thermometers on front and back porches are nearing the 100* mark. 🙁
Thanks for the detailed daily layouts, Chris.
wow, the rain just drops to about northern frankfort and starts moving due east, this drought is getting ugly!
Another heavy shower forms literally a mile down the road from me and we we got sprinkles!
This hit and miss crap is driving me nuts!
I’m trying to keep the faith but the rain dome appears to be of unusual strength.
Still not a drop here either.Looking at the radar none even close so hopefully later tonight or tomorrow preferably without the storms included.
I know how you feel Todd.My friend lives about 4 miles from me and she called the other day all happy they had got a good soaking. It sprinkled less than 5 minutes here that day and I never bothered to come inside it was so light.
Strange how so many of use barely get missed time and again.
The dome has broken…just pouring down rain for nearly 30 minutes now. Happy.
Yesssss! Finally, it is raining in Grayson, KY. At 11:15 p.m. we have RAIN.
I can here thunder but now the rain is shifting to far.south! WOW just can’t catch a break in latelt on the rain chances??
At this point it will take a tropical storm to break the. Drought in my area that continues, congrats on the folks that are getting good rains tonight, drought continues at my place!
Maybe the showers will eventually drop on southward. So far everything is well north of me and trailing to the east.Do have a little bit of a breeze.
