Good evening, gang. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has been issued for much of western and central Kentucky until 4am EST. A line of strong and severe thunderstorms will roll eastward across the state this into the wee hours of the morning.
Damaging winds will be likely with this line. Torrential rainfall may cause local high water issues. I have you all set to track the action…
Today’s risk area
Current watches
I will have rapid fire updates and warnings coming your way via twitter.
Take care.
Very vivid lightning and a few strikes near my abode close to Iroquois Park in the metro. Wow!!!
Why is that line of storms broken between just north of louisville to cincy?
The weak link in that area splits and fades with this years storm complexes??
Now this was a great storm. One of the very best lightning shows ever and very heavy rain. Just heavy rain now and thunder and lightning now as it sounds like the wind is dying down.
Agreed. SW Jefferson County Prp Valley Station the Dixie Hwy corridor really got smacked.
No need for a severe thunderstorm warning. The National Weather Service issues these warnings just for fun now I think. They need a refresher course on what the criteria is. The lightning was amazing though.
Sw Jefferson County the warning was definitely warranted.
So you are saying you had winds of 58 mph or higher?
Easily 60mph or better 16,000 power outages primarily in sw Jefferson county during the height of the storm several trees reported being down between valley station and Westpoint. Fort Knox reported 60 mph wind gusts with power lines down and tree damage. Dixie Hwy corridor took the worst of the storm.
Another fading line of storms dying as it gets closer to Frankfort!
If the roads get wet I will be very amazed?
Your radar Chris is showing rain over my area nothing is falling, lightning and wind a few sprinkles, might want to tweak something?
Please tweak the radar technology so Todd will get some rain. I wonder what you would complain about then.
Even with today’s technology, there still seems to be a considerable disconnect between what the radar indicates and what is actually happening on the ground. Too often I see warnings getting issued for storms that barely have any hail at all and winds not even pushing 40 mph.
“THE
COMBINATION OF ALL OF THE SEVERE PARAMETERS IS SOMETHING RARELY SEEN
IN EASTERN KENTUCKY IN JULY. WE WILL HAVE ENHANCED STAFFING AT THE
WEATHER OFFICE TOMORROW IN ANTICIPATION OF THE POTENTIAL SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS TOMORROW AFTERNOON.”
Interesting comments from the folks at JKL
I do not post much in the summer, but this has the CHANCE to be significant. The sun has come out to make it nice warm in a lot of areas. That with and humid air , plus the cooler air heading in is not a good combo for stable weather.
I’m listening to the police scanner and their saying the National Weather called and told them another major storm will be coming in in 30 minutes
