Good Thursday, everyone. We’ve made it to the final day of July and our cooler than normal weather pattern shows no signs of changing. The nice conditions will begin to change as the threat for showers and thunderstorms increase in the coming days.
Let’s start with where we are today and roll forward toward the fall and winter. Wait… what? Ok, Ok… a small model preview of the fall and winter. 🙂
Highs today will hit the low 80s for many with the threat for a shower or thunderstorm going up. Track away…
Current Temperatures
Moisture will increase for Friday and this looks to give us a slightly better chance for a few showers and storms kicking in. That’s especially true across the eastern part of the state…
The scattered showers and storms will continue to fire up on Saturday with temps back in the upper 70s to low 80s.
The overall pattern continues to feature lower heights in the atmosphere through the weekend…
The setup for next week is likely to feature another dip in the jet stream for the middle and end of the week. The European Model is going toward a stout cutoff upper level low…
That would lead to more cooler than normal temps and a wetter pattern taking shape.
What about the fall and winter ahead of us? It’s too early to get a good grip on things as I love to see how things look through the early Fall. The big warm pool off the west coast into the Gulf of Alaska is still going strong and that’s one reason our pattern hasn’t changes much over the past year.
One of the longer range models shows the colder than normal pattern continuing…
Have a great last day of the month and take care.
Mini ice age upon us. At this point we will have snow in early October. Looks like another six month winter is I store for us. Enjoy the cool weather and THINK SNOW!!!
Thanks Chris. Although the temps have been pleasant I miss the summer temps. Been too cool to get in the pool, and school is getting ready to start. What happened to summer? Will be interesting to see what the fall and winter shape up to be. Hopefully, more normal with a little snow love to the southern zones…..just not yet. Give me mid 80s and some sunshine for a bit longer. Have a great Thursday everyone.
The energy for these storms works in from the atlantic. Mountains off to our east help filter some of the excessive moisture before it gets here.
Which computer model was that, I wonder?
Looks like Japanese model when you click on the maps for the extended range through the winter.
Thanks, Chris, for the fall preview. We know that’s just one model and that things can change, but it’s good to look ahead to see what’s down the road. We aren’t as dry as western KY, but everything last week and so far this week, has skipped over our neck of the woods. One day we had storms to our south and storms to our north and we were stuck in the middle with nothing. I hope that isn’t a preview of our chances for snow this fall/winter.
Although El Nino may not become as much of a factor as initially forecast, it can alter patterns, even the persistent one we’ve seen. I see a long range probability forecast from the CPC that leans toward warmer than average readings across the northern plains for this upcoming winter and drier than average for our region, indicative of a typical el nino pattern.

People asking “where did summer go?” must have been living under a rock for most of the May and June period. Wait, what about the days hitting 80s even before then? Yeah.
I don’t buy the cold hanging around through winter. I know Chris is just showing the long range models and not making a forecast, so this is in no way a disagreement toward him. I just don’t see us staying well below average that many months in a row. Weather pretty much equals itself out over time, and although average changes, it is gradual changes. Most of the time you will get a few warmer months to go along with the cooler ones to push those numbers closer to average.
I already said…it hasent been pool weather…the gardens r strange this year too.mine is now doing OK.took a long ti loomme to get going though.too cool of a spring.stunned everything. I have even see trees changing their colors.read the almanac it gives u ways to tell what the winter we will have.almanac says…bitter cold /snowy winter…brrrrr.
