Good Sunday, everyone. Our recent blast of October temps will moderate just a bit in the coming days, but the numbers will still be much cooler than normal. The week ahead weather is pretty clear cut, but what happens after that is still a bit fuzzy to me. Let’s get into it.
Readings this morning will likely be the coldest we’ve had since back in the spring. Many areas should wake up to readings in the 40s and a few spots could drop all the way into the lower 40s. That, at least, puts us within shouting distance of a few records. Areas that see clouds will obviously be several degrees higher than those with clear skies.
Today’s Lows
Skies will feature a mix of sun and clouds today with highs in the mid 60s to low 70s…
Current Temperatures
Monday will find a milder wind blowing with thermometers returning to the 70s. Clouds will increase and a shower may develop late in the day from west to east. A better chance for scattered showers arrives Monday night and Tuesday. That’s when another front works across the state…
Temps will come back down behind that front with upper 60s to low 70s for highs a good bet into the middle of the week.
The setup by Thursday should feature a huge shot of cold weather coming into the Great Lakes and northeast. That throws some more cooler air our way and could drop those temps just a tad more. Throw in a developing storm across the southeast and we could get a little windy, too…
This super cool pattern is likely to give way to a more normal brand of September air late next weekend or into the following week. I don’t think we are done with 80 degree temps, by any means.
That said… I continue to keep a close eye on the Gulf of Mexico. One of my top analog years featured something there in late September and the GFS keeps showing something there in the day 10 time period…
Of course, it IS the GFS! Plus, it’s just a thought I’m throwing out there as having a chance at happening. This has been another quiet tropical year, so that certainly doesn’t bode well for that “chance”.
What about the chances for cold and snow this winter? I plan on talking about that with my next update. 😉
Have a great day and take care.
I feel bad for the cats and cards. Couldn’t lose in more excruciating ways than they managed to. Really entertaining games though.
Nothing like a little snow talk..Maybe the cold will drop down more east than Mid-west as compared to last year…If EL NINO develops hopefully we see an active southern stream with a lot of systems coming out of the Gulf heading our way..Sure would like to see another “snoicane” like in march of 93..Should know by the end of October if The Christ Child will develop..
Another like the Blizzard of ’93, with all that death and damage? Why don’t you just lock yourself into a deep freeze for a few days if that’s what you want?
Some of us are obsessed with the snow. No one wants death and damage but we do love our snow. Let’s just hope we can get huge snows with no damage or death.
Hmmm…if you’re gonna read a blog mostly read by snow fans, I’d suggest you grow some thicker skin. I’d LOVE to see a big snow storm. No one here wants it to be tragic.
Thicker skin? I don’t mind snow, Joey. But to actually wish for a replay of the Blizzard of ’93? There’s a difference between being a fan of snow and wintry weather and wishing for a repeat of one of the deadliest storms to hit the U.S.
Thermometer read 39 degrees this morning up on the ridge here in greenup county! I loved it! As for my Cats, so so proud of them! MUCH improved and I think we found a good QB! That play clock was most def at 0, hated to lose the way we did!
Looking forward to the snow talk tonight Chris.
BEAUTIFUL day!
On my Galaxy S5
I tried Opera, Firefox (I even went into the firefox settings and enabled Java), Chrome, and the nws radar loop still says a plugin is needed. I guess I will just use their mobile app radar, but that radar doesn’t look nearly as good to me.
Have absolutely loved the weather this weekend.Got down to 47 here this morning.Probably got to around 75 today.Didn’t really check.Decided to make it my weekend to relax.Got a couple of naps yesterday and a couple today.Rare for me to get a daytime nap.
I too am looking forward to the cool temps and even winter as long as it isn’t to bad.Not looking forward to baby sitting water pipes so they don’t freeze but that just comes with winter.
The only detailed winter forecast I have followed so far is the weatherbell one and it is saying we will have a bitter one with plenty of snow.Time will tell. Will be here checking the next update to see whats posted regarding the snow and cold for Winter. Thanks Chris for all the details you give with your forecasts.Greatly appreciated.
Louisville’s 3 heating degrees (average temperature of high and low < 65) yesterday was the first occurrence since May 19 when 3 heating degree days were recorded then also. Louisville should add more heating degrees for today as the average temperature remained below 65 degrees. It is definitely a sign Fall is coming.
Heating degree days are hard to come by in the summertime. Amazing as it sounds, Lexington recorded 2 heating degree days on July 29 when the high was 75 and the low was 51 for an average of 63 degrees.
