Good Wednesday, everyone. It’s one of the coldest patterns you will ever find around here in the month of November, and it keeps rolling on. Record lows for today were set at midnight in many areas. Seriously… midnight! High single digits and low teens were common around that time.
Don’t look now, but the cold continues! It isn’t going to be the extreme stuff of the past week, but the overall pattern continues to be skewed much colder than normal through Thanksgiving week, at least. Those are the same thoughts I’ve been throwing since early November and nothing has change for me.
We actually have another arctic front swinging into the region later today. This front cause winds to gust up from the west and southwest and that will boost temps well into the 30s for highs. A band of light snow and flurries should accompany this boundary as it slips through here. The high resolution NAM is spitting out some very light accumulations…
Temps coming in behind this system are looking colder as we get closer. Highs on Thursday should range from the upper 20s to low 30s with teens showing up by Friday morning. Highs on Friday hit the low and middle 30s as clouds increase from the southwest.
Moisture moves in Friday night and Saturday morning and I continue to think a period of frozen precipitation is possible for a brief period. The new GFS agrees…
That is on the leading edge of some milder air pushing in for the weekend. That air is looking cooler by the day, but it’s still way above where we are now. A few showers will be around on Saturday with temps trying to get to 50. Trying is the key word, right now.
Sunday is a windy and a wet day with temps mainly in the 50s. Locally heavy rains will be possible…
Falling temps will then sweep in on Monday with showers that may end as a mix of some light snow by Monday night and early Tuesday. Cold air is then back in town, though it won’t be like what we are dealing with now.
A system is going to try to run underneath this with some wintry weather to start the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.
I’m more interested in the system that comes in behind that for Black Friday into the weekend. The setup I’m seeing for that has legs from a week and a half away. The European Model will likely show the storm, but be way off because of how it handles energy coming in from the southwest. From this same time period out from the last storm… it was showing a storm cutting through the western Great Lakes. That obviously was way off with a low going by to our east. Know the model biases and correct them. 😉
I will update later today. Make it a good one and take care.
I guess that mean more rain for eastern ky no fun and games for that we see enough rain just soon it stay dry
Until another drought comes.
Wont hear me complaining when another drought comes. A brown yard is much better than than having to mow 2+ times per week like I have had to do the past 3 years. 😉
It was a very cold morning to have to get out and about. Tomorrow will feel like a heat wave.
Thank you Chris!
Thank you, Chris.
Yes – still really cold but the sun sure is nice.
Looking forward to a little warmup for some outdoor work then maybe some SNOW fun for Thanksgiving weekend?
Amazing at the LES in Buffalo…6 Feet and counting..Read they broke some record’s in that area that dated back to “Drum roll” 1976…
This extreme cold is causing my vehicles to freek, new tires, batteries and other issues, this is getting expensive 🙁
Where in the name of all that’s holy is a wind advisory for today??
Look at those readings on Mesonet all over the state.
I’ve seen advisories and discussion over much less mph.
From a local met weather page, “southerly breeze today”. Yeah, nice BREEZE. A small positive take away, high temps are already destroying the forecast high of 37 for today.
I had to reschedule a bunch of work today because planned maintenance projects I was involved in with a couple local power companies were cancelled at the last minute today due to weather conditions (i.e. too much friggin’ wind). If you know lineman, you know they can shame sailors when it comes to language and they were extra salty today at having to rearrange so much work when the weather is clear.
What happened with the modeling that didn’t show how much wind we’d have today? Obviously, if CB or anyone else had seen this coming they’d have mentioned it as something to look out for today.
47 here in Carrie of knott co. Feels nice out
11 degrees in Lexington this morning and at 2pm its 45 degrees outside that’s insane. Never underestimate the power of a southerly wind. That’s a 34 degree jump.
All the snow is pretty much gone that’s depressing.
Not really. Wasn’t going to stick around anyhow as it never does no matter the month here in KY. Besides I still have a multitude of fall/winter clean up jobs that still have to be done. Can’t clear leaves when there is snow on the ground. And wet leaves suck. Almost has bad as cold rain….Thanks Chris for the update. Hope we have a late 70’s type of winter.
Yup. I concur. Depressing. Even that little bit of snow made my week though. What would I give to be in Buffalo, NY this week.
Right as rain, have you lost your ever loving mind??? Buffalo!?! 6to7 feet of snow at a rate of 4to6 inches per hour. I love cheesecake but a slice at a time not the whole cheesecake in one sitting. Same theory for snow 4to8 inches of snow would be just fine. 6to7 feet of snow at one time that’s completely insane. Once that lake effect machine quits and the melting starts to take place that’s just going to be a complete disaster.
Maybe I have my mind, but it would be something to experience.
All the leaves have fallen from our chestnut trees, something that never happens before Thanksgiving. With the warmer weather showing up this Friday and Saturday, I’m pretty sure what chore we will be doing. That’s ok because the yard will look so much better and we might get some Christmas lights strung around the house. Just noticed TWC is predicting 45 and sunny for Thanksgiving which should make driving easier for anyone having to travel. We will have to wish for a white Christmas.
