Good evening, all. I wanted to drop by for a quick update on the super duper active winter weather pattern developing across the country as we roll into Christmas week.
We continue to track some snow chances before we even get into next week. The first one is on track for late tonight and Thursday. This may put down some light accumulations across the western half of the state with a touch of sleet and freezing rain trying to get in the mix. That action diminishes the farther east it gets, but should cause some flakes to fly for many.
The Friday night and Saturday storm system looks about the same as it has for the past few days. It’s a weaker storm because some of that energy is shooting out ahead of it and giving us the flakes threat on Thursday.
The NAM shows a stripe of winter weather…
Remember when I kept saying we had a much better chance of this thing going well to our south and it cutting to the lakes like the GFS had? The weaker the low, the farther south it stays.
The Christmas week setup is now getting a lot of attention from forecasters across the country. A huge buckle in the jet stream could create a bomb of a storm system across the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes on Christmas Eve.
Check out the look from the European for next Wednesday morning…
That’s pretty darn wicked. Here’s a little more in depth look at what the same model run shows…
That’s a week away and that’s an eternity in the world of weather. Still, that’s pretty darn wild to see anytime of the year, especially around Christmas.
I will have another update later tonight. Enjoy the evening and take care.
How wild is the set up? Could it bring a lot of snow, or just some?
It would be rain at first. You could definitely get a few inches of snow out of that setup though. The wind would be a problem too. Michigan and Wisconsin would get a monster storm.
Looks by that map seky gets more rain than snow for next week of course that’s a long way out.
Roger in Dodger has a Barcalounger…..LOL. I just like the way that sounds DamagedGoods…..Here is hoping and Dreaming that these models come in colder with a bombed out phased low that runs up the apps….Game on dude and thanks for the update…
😉
If the track of that low is correct, Eastern KY and western WV will get their usual dose of heavy rain then couple flurries. Locals have wiped out any chance of snow for Saturday and they have rain with temps approaching 60 for next Tuesday. Here in WV.
Thanks for the update, Chris.
Sure hope this thing next week hangs together and maybe the weekend system will surprise us a little.
Love the eye candy Chris. What a present that would be! Well someone is going to get a white Christmas for sure. Would be nice if it were all us snow starved peeps in Kentucky. Are you listening Santa???
With the track these storms are taking it wouldn’t take much for us to get a big snow storm.
Looks like cold rain till weds nite then maybe switch to snow showers on back side thurs.
Nws jackson has weekend storm rain for our area also.
Winter reminds me of last few years so far. “Maybe next storm will give snow”. Models show cold. Then precip. 33/32.comes. Rain with light snow /flurries on back side.
.still lot winter to go but so far oct has had more snow then dec in east ky.
I gotta agree with others on here. I really appreciate what you do Chris, but until I see something where I live, Somerset, KY I’ll be a huge doubter. Love your positive attitude Coffeelady. I generally have a positive attitude except for snow chances in our areas. We’ve sen way too many week ahead storms flop or only produce rain when they actually arrive. The current track looks like 1-2 inches if rain followed by a few snowshoers and or flurries.
1-2 inches of rain followed by a few snow showers.
Not being Grinchy just telling it like we’ve seen it here.
That kind of setup on the monster storm is a setup for someone, literally, to get buried in snow. No, that’s not an exaggeration or an overstatement of the truth. That is if that model actually verified and that track actually happened. The first flakes of that storm haven’t even materialized yet, but it’s very important to keep an eye on.
The boys at WDRB are going with mostly RAIN, followed by a few gusty snow showers on Christmas Eve. Oh well, always the week after, lol. For southeast KY, i don’t expect anything more than a few festive flurries for the holidays. YAY
The way i look at it maybe this is the pattern change going forward..Hope Jan. and Feb brings cold and snow for everyone in Ky..Would be nice to see snow Christmas morning for the little one’s..Just something magical with snow on Christmas morning..
we are past due for another blizzard of 93.
I tend to remember the blizzard of Feb 3-6, 1998. 🙂 18 inches worth. 🙂
We have had nothing close to that since 93 in the valley in Harlan. only the mountains.
