Good afternoon, gang. Since I have some of the slowest friends on earth, I’m able to squeeze out one final update before hitting the road.
Yes, I am totally serious. They have no shame. 🙂
Let’s get to the weather part of the program. A period of light snow and flurries will be possible tonight into early Saturday as our southern system skirts the bluegrass state.
The main action continues to revolve around a storm that bombs out as it lifts northward across Kentucky and into the Great Lakes. This is likely to become a powerhouse storm Christmas Eve into Christmas Day. The Canadian Model…
That’s one heck of a storm. According to that model run…. it’s heavy rain and wind Tuesday with a rapid switch to snow by Wednesday morning with high winds. Snow showers and squalls would then carry us into Christmas Eve and Morning. Again… that’s what the Canadian model is showing and it’s similar to what we’ve been seeing from other models.
The European Model basically shows a similar setup…
The GFS continues a slow and steady trend toward what the above models are showing. At the VERY LEAST, snow showers, gusty winds and cold weather should be around for Christmas Eve into Christmas morning.
Btw… today is ANOTHER day with the models busting way warm! The GFS earlier this week had Lexington in the 40s for each of the past two days and today. Nope!
I want you to read this statement from my last update…
The more I look at this pattern for late month into January and then look at the supercomputer analog years that match the pattern… wow. It’s becoming very apparent my winter forecast for January was not cold enough (and it was very cold to start). I said the same thing around this time last year and we saw how that worked out. Not only are analog years that featured bitter cold showing up… several of them also produced memorable storms.
How that can be seen as a sign I’m no longer excited about the winter pattern ahead? That’s about as bold as I can be with harsh winter thoughts to be honest. 🙂
I will have updates as I can tonight and through the weekend. Twitter will come in handy for those wanting some quick thoughts and to follow the progress of my trip. If you aren’t into sports tweets, you may not like some you see from me. 😉
Have a great rest of the day and take care.
I love the comments about the games! You make me laugh! You’re a funny weather dude CB!
Be careful and have fun…Go Big Blue!
Safe travels and have a big time with your friends.
And thanks for reiterating your winter forecast. Gotta’ believe!
Liking the analog talk.
BTW… the Canadian and European Models would give us the potential for 40-50mph wind gusts on Christmas Eve… possible as it’s snowing.
More of a convective snow showers/squalls sort of a setup?
The B word could be the case with medium to heavy snow for whoever gets it. B word is blizzard…..
I will trust the trend and expect the very least scenario of blowing festive flakes. North of I64 better watch out! Well, at least they have would seem to have a better shot.
Go Cats!
Good idea. Rain then flurries or light snow showers. With wind that stiff it will be hard to accumulate.
Even with no accumulation, it’s better than a dreary, cloudy day with drizzle.
Did BubbaG really just say the B word. You been hitting Rolo’s bottle….LOL
Have a great time Chris! Love the sports tweets. Love the analog talk. My hope is we get some snow over the entire state this winter. Yes, this includes Richmond, Knox County and my own Somerset. We are due! Have a safe trip Chris. Looking forward to more tweets and updates, whenever they come!
I have seen a few other places post about the pattern after Christmas. Seems they are coming around to what you are saying and seeing. They are just now starting to lower those temp. forecasts for Christmas Even and Christmas as well. Seems like the model(s) they use are starting to move a little colder.
The lowering of those temps. is following along with those models temp. busts it seems. That explanation fits what I have noticed in their forecasts well. Hope the trend continues.
Maybe we can see a light snow for Christmas. Safe road and a light snow would be the best really. To many people want to go around to family for Christmas Eve and Christmas.
Just keep the storm and agreeing models. Everything else will take care of itself. THINK SNOW!! Safe travels and thanks for the update.
I just can’t get remotely excited about these “quick changeover” from rain to snow forecasts. My instincts tell me it’ll be another agonizingly slow changeover from a heavy & cold rain to just a few flurries, if that.
I’m totally with you on this one. Especially the further East you go in KY toward WV. So many times the temp hang around 34/35 with rain till the moisture is gone. I can really see this happening again. But I hope not.
Me either, but it is sounding like next month might be our best shot at a “trend buster” in 20 years.
I like bourbon
and one scotch and one beer. Taken from the wise words of George Thorogood. He was a part time met 😉
…and that is awesome. Well played BubbaG.
Knew George was a pretty fair baseball player, never knew he was a Met.
Good one Bubba 🙂
as one “Anchorman” would say “i like scotch, scotch scotch scotch …scotch in my belly

I’m just glad to se Vinny back.
If we had gotten as much snow as we have had clouds in WV this December, I would be the happiest person in the state.
Don’t know your area but my part of WV has had several accumulating snows November & December.
load up on the cats Bailey and pay for ur trip!!!!! be safe!!!

With highs forecast in the 50’s for Monday and Tuesday, anything that does freeze and falls to the ground will melt on contact. No white Christmas this year but we’ll have 365 days to wish for next year.
I noticed WKYT has their forecast for Monday and Tuesday at 42 and 44 for highs. And I have noticed that the highs forecast for my area on other places is coming down. Wondering if this is another case that the temperatures come in colder than the current forecasts at those other places for my area. Seems to be the case so far for much of November-December.
Hope that the trend continues and we see those temperatures in those forecasts bust. If we can have highs those days only in the low 40’s that might help with getting more snow on the back side of this. Guess we will see. Hoping for the best for the snow lovers.
LMK still has 55 for a high on Tuesday.
The record for the least amount snow for December in Huntington WV is 0.0 set in 1913 and 1990. I think we have a real good chance at tying that or at least getting in to top 10 which is 0.8 inch. Especially with 40 to 50 degree highs for everyday next week except Thursday which is 38.
Not been any temp busts in seky. Seky has a total different weather scheme then the rest of ky
Been a long, gray, cold and miserable december here in London. Models are riot, and I can’t believe that any of us fall for the junk science of modeling.
Mark my words, Jackson and London finish <10" of snow this year. Major warmup by late January. The blowtorch will come this winter, friends.
Here we go once again!!! The last time you prophicied a blowtorch happening people pipes were busting do to below zero temps and windchills.
Watch out, CB has already warned you. My forecast for Bryant is 99% chance of getting kicked out by next month if the Blowtorch thing doesn’t stop.
Also, CB refers in his tweet to the 12/24 as “our” storm. Unless this is the Ohioweathercenter.com, this is by no means a KY storm. Unless, of course, you like cold heavy rain followed by a a few worthless flurries.
Give it a rest…you are so annoying
Someone used the B word earlier in reference to blizzard. I would use it again here to describe peeps who have nothing to do but complain. 🙂
Put your money where your mouth is, take my bet. But I bet a troll like you would welsh on a bet.
You are a troll of negativity…the only blowtorch I see happening is from all that hot air you blow…
Sorry, I don’t buy into sunshine pumping. There is very little indication that the christmas storm produces much in the way of a true winter event statewide.
I agree with you Bryant. Nothing to see here. But, winter begins Sunday so we will see.
For? Calling it like it is?
What is wrong with you?
He’s dellusional lol
LMAO….You all are really arguing over weather…..wow
Corey, i bet you’re the type that runs around telling everyone that its going to snow 2 feet next week, just because a worthless long range model went nuts
lol no I rarely talk about the weather outside this blog or on Twitter when Chris tweets! I just appreciate all his hard work and dedication…and bjenks…I’m
Not arguing over anything…Im just tired of seeing this guys negativity and always downing what Chris has to say…he’s about as immature as they come
Drama major? I wasn’t bashing CB, just questioned why the storm was getting so much hype and Twitter time, when its obvious it has very little impact on our weather, other than gusty winds and a few snow squalls. This IS NOT 1978
We’ve had three tiny little snows this year, and all of them combined wouldnt amount to a quarter of an inch. Its been a pretty wimpy winter so far.
It’s not winter yet.
We usually get our good snows in January.
In my part of Richmond we had a bit of snow in the air and a rooftop with the odd bit of dust, once so far. Nothing on the ground yet… Waiting and seeing. (I don’t buy the models either – they get it wrong time and time again… They never seem to get any better.) I enjoy following Chris’ work however. He takes what the science provides mixes it with his education and experience and gives us the best predictions around. Let’s see how it goes…
Hello! It is still fall. Give winter a chance. The way I see it is that it has been one hell of a cold fall. I hope winter is colder and wetter. We are already above average in snowfall in my area. If you look at your local records you might find that a 1/4 inch may be above average for you as well.
So all that you’re sayin’…..is give winter chance. Sounds like a Lennon song.
LOL…oh I guess I could have said that we here in Louisville have received over 15 inches of snow THIS year….Peace feederband
Do you all feel like ch 18 deliberatly takes an opposite stand to Chris? It seems they want to look for opportunities to make themselves different.
lol
Let the arm chair forecasting begin!!!
All these talks about snows have thus far amounted to almost nothing. I won’t hold my breath.
My hometown team (EKU) upset #18 Miami U tonight… now I believe this is going to be a winter to remember!
I saw that! Wow!
weather wise, no white XMAS, nothing but rain and few flurries at end.. like my youtube page on facebook at Lewis Rolo Roberts and watch my racing videos!!!!
Well look what decided to show up on radar and head this way surprisingly enough!?! Not real sure if it’s just virga or if precip is actually hitting the ground out to the west.
Don’t know how many are noticing but the radar as of midnight looks about as exciting for snow as it has thus far this season! I agree with prelude…it would be interesting to know if all of that is reaching the ground.
