Good Tuesday, folks. We have a wild ride ahead of us as a deepening storm system works across the region on Wednesday. This will set the stage for some wicked conditions for holiday travelers and for Santa Clause as he arrives in the bluegrass state.
Let’s start with the weather we have out there today. Gusty showers will be common with temps hitting the mid and upper 50s for many areas. A 60 is possible with a few breaks in the rain.
Current temperatures
The rain will increase this evening as rumbles of thunder become possible. Winds will increase during this same time and could reach 30mph by Wednesday morning. Low pressure will then work right across the state from south to north on Christmas Eve. This will bring a lot of different and wild weather our way.
– The first threat will come from the general winds. Gusts in excess of 40mph will be a good bet. Check this forecast map from the NAM…
– That could be enough to cause some minor wind damage and that’s something we will have to watch out for. As I said, Santa will need the Dramamine when he flies in here.
– Heavy rain and some thunderstorms will also be likely on Wednesday. Could we have a few strong storms that produce even higher winds? Maybe.
– Temps will CRASH quickly from west to east Wednesday afternoon into Christmas Evening. We could be talking about a 25-30 degree temperature drop in just a few hours. The NAM and the Hi-Res NAM show a wicked temp plunge…
– Keep in mind, that temp drop comes with winds gusting to 40mph at times.
– Rain will then change to a few snow showers and flurries from late Christmas Eve into Christmas Morning…
– Much better weather returns late Christmas Day into Friday. That period looks good for traveling back from being over the river and through the woods.
– Later this weekend will find a cold front moving in and stalling out with a wave of low pressure along it. Rain will increase late Saturday with rain or snow possible on Sunday. Systems are lined up as arctic air begins to take control of the pattern. Fun times.
I will have updates later today. Have a good one and take care.
Merry Christmas Eve Eve….thanks for the update Chris. I hope after Xmas the true cold come tumbling in a we have a winter like last year with more snow.
IT WILL (7 days out of course)…so far forcast this week not good. I wish it would turn cold snow..usually law averages catches up so hopefully January we can get some snow…i have not seen snow in Richmond this December (maybe a trace)
Well at least the Bengals broke the trend. But the no snow trend is still going to hold.
This weather is all bark and no bite: Rough! Spelled that way on purpose. Ruff!
Thanks Chris. We’d love to see a few snow showers for Christmas. Just right.
And we’ll look forward to some cold and snow chances ramping up next week!
Ya gotta love all the wannabes and armchair weathercasters who live for nothing more than saying Chris missed a forecast. They lead sad and insecure lives. So what if he gets one wrong?
I think They were “hurt” by the “They are wrong” comments and then They turned out (for once) to perhaps be right. They will latch on to this for two reasons: Finally being right and being told they were wrong. The BITOMs (brilliant in their own minds) do Not like being told they are wrong- How dare thee! 😉 🙂
CB always cautioned it could be a festive flake event
Thoughts of 91-92 if i remember correctly..November was cold and then after spring came early..Uggggghhhhh
On the flip side 78-79 winter turned ugly in a good way after a cold November and normal December. Spring will get its chance after March.
The one piece of weather which gets me in a horrible mood? Cold, wet rain….
It really is too bad we missed out on a white Christmas this year. I know festive flakes, or snow globe weather is enough to satisfy some on Christmas. But, not this guy.
We still have 2 months to try and squeeze a couple big snowstorms out.
I still believe one good snow (10″ or more) and one Ice Ice Baby storm (1″ or more) will happen this winter. Of course not for all. But, as an overall view of our state.
Merry Christmas to everyone and their families!
We have half of March as well for winter weather.
Already 60 in knott co. Dare I say 70 today if the sun sticks around
Great explanation.. shared!
I just want to give e3 ron e a little hope and Chris bailey If I’m wrong please correct me.. I know the cold hasn’t per say invaded or been sustained but feom what I understand the pattern that we are entering is good for snow in the western wv ky and Ohio regions because their could be just eno ugh cold with the front stalling close to our east and the one thing our region needs is show in up on the models…. a southeastern ridge over the Bahamas and florida which will keep it war and rainy on the east coat but we would possibly be on the cold side of the storms running along the cold front!
