Good Wednesday and Merry Christmas, Everyone. A big area of low pressure will work northward across the state today and this will bring about some wild weather. I have you all set to track the action as we head over the river and through the woods.
Some thoughts:
– Winds today will be a big player with gusts of 40mph at times across the central and eastern Kentucky.
– Temps will be wicked early today with 40s in the west and 60s in the central and east. Those numbers will drop like a rock from west to east as the storm system lifts to our north. Temps will drop some 20-25 degrees in just a few hours.
– Most areas will see temps dropping into the 30s for Christmas Eve with some snowflakes starting to fly. That trend starts in the west and works to the east into Christmas Morning.
– A cold front works into the region over the weekend and slows down. This allows for waves of low pressure to develop along it. The first few will likely be cold rain makers for us for later Saturday into Sunday. A switch to snow is possible come Sunday night and Monday.
– The arctic air associated with this front then pushes into our region for the last couple of days of 2014. That will likely set the stage for a few more systems that will have a MUCH better chance at being pure snow makers for us. The European Model and the GFS Model agree on that thought…
Your tracking toys for the day…

I will have another update later today. Merry Christmas and take care.
All the extended forecasts I see have rain and forties. Weather channel has a few 30 degree days with clouds and sun. The usual around here.
Thanks for the update, Chris. Some crazy Kentucky weather for sure.
Also appreciate the link to the story on Father Jim Sichko. True Christmas spirit!
This is the Day that the Lord has made! Merry Christmas Chris Bailey! Your doing a great job with the weather forecasting. There is a lot of things in this world I could complain about and pout about, but pouting and complaining over the weather! In the words of my Monday night Football analyst, COME ON MAN!!!! I read your blog everyday and I appreciate what you do! From a Pastor to Weather dude, Merry Christmas!!
have to ask, CB u r not gung ho as u was on HARSH WINTER setting in, just wondering if anything changed on that. tx
My very uneducated guess is CB may be pondering this himself.
Thanks Chris! Merry Christmas to all my fellow weather lovers! I wish you all much joy and love this Holiday Season. And may all your Christmases be white, (at least in your dreams!) 😉
Merry Christmas to you and yours as well Coffeelady! You always have been and remain the brightest spot on this blog and I know all the other regular feel the same way. We should all be more like you.
To my amateur eye it looks like the brunt of the arctic air will stay in the central and northern US. Maybe good for the OV because the cold air doesn’t surpress the storm track. But bad because any storm system could be a mix or rain in KY.
With that said, the models (all of the them) have been horrible in the long range (and even the short range). This weeks storm (while seasonably strong) was nothing like the epic superstorm bomb the models were hyping a week ago.
Hence for anything that rhymes with “snow” in the model outlooks, I disregard until the day before the “event”. Lucy can KEEP her dang football to herself! 🙂
The overstated trend for snow in the outlooks is nearing Old Faithful in ‘geo-physical’ consistency 😉
Sun came out for a few minutes, now flirting with 70 degrees in Perry Co.. Feels like Spring!
Happens every time in my neighborhood trash day = high winds with herbies blown over….
Must admit, this Eve from a weather standpoint is about as un-seasonal for the area at the moment we could get. At least (knock on wood) no tornado events for the area.
Any festive flakes in the AM that might fall will be a blur in the wind.
Everybody, hold on to Santa! His weight will be handy in the wind 🙂
Ho Ho Ho!
Merry Christmas Eve, everyone! My family is on the road to McCreary Co as I type this, to visit with family, and we just ran through torrential rains and gusty winds here on Highway 27, in Garrard Co!! As we drive by, we are seeing lots of Christmas decorations blowing in the wind! Hope everyone has a blessed Christmas! I love this blog and all who post here – I have never met you, but you feel like friends! 🙂 Chris, once again, thank you for making this place available to all! Merry Christmas! Happy 2015!
Merry Christmas to you Chris B. & Family, and to all the bloggers here for you & yours!
Been waiting for the wind here in Nelson Co. but must have missed us entirely-wind chimes still in place, haven’t heard them ring all day. Just “muddy feets” from the 4-legged kidlets!
Yeah, we never had any wind in Louisville either and for that I am thankful. Just a dreary day all around and since we won’t be having snow tomorrow, I’m hoping that the sun at least comes out to brighten up the day.
Merry Christmas Everyone!
Apparently, someone is a little annoyed about the disgruntled mood around here and decided that everyone should have to look at all of the non-snow we’re getting with all of those traffic cams.
Well played, sir, well played.
Okay, so things are working out right now, but that’s okay. Keep swingin’ CB. If Dalton can pull it together, anyone can! 🙂
Merry Christmas you all. Remember, tomorrow’s drinking game is based on a shot for everything that blows into your yard that doesn’t belong to you.
Merry Christmas to all my fellow weather lovers. Thanks Chris for all you do all year for us. Everyone have a wonderful Christmas.
Merry Christmas, everybody in KWC land! Jesus is the reason for the season!
As already noted, temperatures are starting to plunge with very windy conditions just as predicted, including here. Ahead of the cold front, severe wx still popping up. No big surprise of severe thunderstorm warnings in Florida, but there is currently even a severe t-storm warning in Fayette County, Ohio.
There is now a severe t-storm warning in Greenup County, KY.
Merry Christmas to all my fellow bloggers and to Chris for always making sure we have something to talk about.
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope each of you has a wonderful holiday surrounded by family and friends. As we pause to celebrate the day tomorrow and the eve tonight, remember this: No matter where we come from, no matter what we look like, no matter how much we’ve got, we’re all the same on the inside. Each of us has a beating heart, each of us has a warm soul. Be kind to each other. Your life will be better for it, I promise. Love isn’t just for the holidays, it’s for all-the-days. If you carry love in your hearts, the Christmas spirit will be with you all year round.
May ALL of your days be merry and bright!
