Good afternoon, everyone. My time is short, but I wanted to drop by for a quick update on the severe weather potential through tonight.
Warm and unstable air continues to lift northward across the region. Record highs may fall as this air moves in, but the severe threat steals the show. The latest model trends indicate a slightly higher threat for tornadoes across western Kentucky with a damaging wind threat for the entire state.
The Storm Prediction Center numbers and explanation of what those numbers mean…
These storms will also pack a lot of rain that can cause some flash flooding issues through Wednesday morning. This is about as wild of a Groundhog Day as you can get around here.
In the spirt of the day and tradition on the blog…
We also found exclusive video of from certain forecasters who downplayed the historic snowstorm a few weeks ago…
Judge me if you like… But you know that’s funny! π
I leave you with all your severe weather tracing tools…
I will have full severe weather coverage on WKYTT-TV. Enjoy the day and take care.
Thanks Chris. Appreciate the heads up you always give us on severe weather and the coverage you provide. Will be travelling to Lexington this evening for a funeral visitation. Hopefully we can make it back to Somerset before it gets too bad. Everyone have a safe afternoon and evening and stay alert!
Winter is over! Spring has Sprung!
Showers are approaching my area, nothing severe so far showing up on radar, anywhere yet. Maybe it could dampen instability for a time for future storms???
Longer the clouds hang in the lower the temps thus lower instability which leads to less severe stormage.
Looks like temps are not as warm as expected overall, so perhaps less potential for issues in areas?
The risk zones are more west than before, so perhaps.
Well, it looked like an innocent shower…then BAM, so far I got the only lightning strike in the county according to the lightning tracker web site I use.
Chris that’s soo funny you are our full service weatherman providing comedy relief free I would like to hear your thoughts on mr.groundhog today I so hope he’s wrong I need more snow but my squirrel saw his shadow and ran back in his squirrel condo does that count?? Later weather dudes!
74 degrees today. Really enjoyed it. Not looking forward to the rain though. Ground is full and water is standing in places.
As CB just tweeted, a new tornado watch may soon be issued by the SPC for much of central KY (as well as for central TN and points to the south).
I saw a tornado warning southwest of Clarksville. Have some friends that live near there. I believe that’s Wayne county.
What’s the snow looking like for next week?
I can’t believe that no one has congratulated The Voice of Reason for being featured on the Bing wallpaper today.
Come on guys, let’s rise above it and support the local talent when it’s their time to shine!

That made me laugh, thanks.
Gonna have to say no.
Only a few reports of damage so far down in Mississippi, perhaps a tornadic cell affecting the counties highlighted on SPC site.
What an awesome weather day! I am huge winter storm fan, but I enjoyed the warmth and creative display of clouds this evening while travelling home from work. I am still getting a little excited at the models and potential for next week.
Ground hog thinks an early spring, but I think we will squeeze out some more bad, wintry weeks and at least a good, widespread snow (or two)!!!
SPC just updated it’s Convective Outlook page, the tornado risk is down to only 2% for all of KY and TN. Strong damaging winds remain the “convective” risk with the highest chances. But as CB has mentioned, some flooding issues are also a danger; Flash Flood Warning just issued for areas in and near Owensboro KY.
Rodger is ready to get back to WINTER STORM tracking. Let’s get the cold and snow rolling next week … please. Rodger in Dodger!
I think the emphasis will be more to the east an NE. As far as significant snow for the rest of winter, we might have caught the big fish as soon as we got to the lake and cast line, but only caught a guppy after that. My back hopes this is correct π
It looked like the bad stuff for tonight was more west and seems to be the case based on CB’s report on 56 tonight. Win! π
Just as long as we avoid ice this winter- another Win! π
Seriously the only tornado outbreaks at night in Kentucky since 74 are few and far between…….On back to Snowtime!!
That is a good thing of course.
Well, yes and no. It may not be a huge number, but both Kentucky and Tennessee have high percentages of nocturnal tornadoes…..

At least our area was spared the tornadic activity that Alabama and Mississippi had (and even they had no serious injuries/loss of life).
I think the groundhog is on to something. I’m not seeing many snow chanceS. Suits me just fine! Today was fantastic!
