Good evening, everyone. Things continue to progress nicely toward a very wintry pattern taking up residence across much of the country over the next few weeks. This all gets underway with a system working in from the northwest Sunday night into Monday.
This puts us in a northwesterly flow with additional systems diving in here from the northwest with rounds of snow showers/squalls. A true clipper or two will try to join the fray for the middle and end of the week. The GFS snowfall forecast through Wednesday shows a general 1″-4″ across much of the state with higher amounts possible in the southeast…
Expand that out through Friday and the totals increase a bit…
Check out this absolutely Frigid pattern on the European Model…
The Friday-Saturday maps basically show the Polar Vortex dropping toward the Great Lakes and northeast with even colder air moving in here. That is introduced by another potential light snow maker.
That should set the stage for another system to follow that up around Valentine’s Day. That one is handled differently with each model run that comes out. Here’s what the European Has with it…
I’ll have a full update later tonight. Enjoy your Saturday evening and take care.
Well that Euro model run has the best snow potential on it for my backyard I’ve seen all season..lol
more snow, bring it
Will be nice to see the flakes fly and dance and with the ground warm and subsurface as warm (in the 40* range where I am) right now…I suspect that it will be the middle to end of the week before there are concerns about road conditions. And if there is a wind and fairly dry surfaces…..not tragicistan.
Thank you Chris for the update. Looking forward to the next one. N the meantime, thought we were having sunshine? We’ve had clouds most of the afternoon in Somerset. Just askin’
Weather gurus or CB,
What is the timeframe for the first signs of potential slick roadways in Ashland this week?
It looks like the totals keep lowering on the fluffy snow for early next week but still good potential for a bigger storm about a week out
Wow. Valentines + ice storm = Population increase 🙂 😉
IF storm is kept, this is where we want it a week out. The infamous NW trend would be your friend. I am NOT saying a storm will happen or form, but the chance I mentioned a couple of days ago about a visit of the PV and a southern system seem more likely at this point. FRIGID air would definitely follow if that were to happen. Still a week or more out, so it will be fun tracking all the potential winter weather across the country!
Rodger got a giggle from this portion of the Paducah NWS afternoon discussion referring to Monday’s snow potential: “However, the winds will blow the light fluffy snow around so it may be quite difficult to measure therefore the impacts look to be minimal at this time.”
What? Because the wind will be blowing around the snow and it will be tough to measure so impacts will be slight? Really? Hmm … blowing snow squalls can make driving very difficult. C’mon guys! Rodger in Dodger
Ho hum. I’m not liking the early week chances. And the valentines chances seem so far off I fear they won’t materializes. As I said on the earlier post, smells like Spring is in the air! Maybe the severe season will be ramped up.
Go Broncos
You looking for a early spring that doesn’t look to happen temps in general look to be below normal well into March.
Mid 40’s to high 50’s? Looks pretty Spring like to me!
It continues to look like we will receive some substantial snow in the next 10 days. Let’s hope for more than a foot.
The early week stuff seems to get lower totals with each run. This winter is about a wrap folks. We might squeeze in a nice snow before it’s over, but it’s not looking too good. A pretty boring winter up to this point. Not a whole lot of days of seeing flakes. Even the week out stuff has been few and far between. Bring Spring.
