Good evening, gang. A powerful cold front will swing across the bluegrass state late Thursday, and bring rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms. This sets the stage for a MUCH colder pattern as we head into April. It’s one littered with multiple hard freeze threats.

Let’s start with a busy Thursday forecast.

  • High winds may reach 40-45mph at times… without thunderstorms.
  • Scattered showers and thunderstorms develop from west to east late tonight into Thursday morning.
  • A break in the action into Thursday afternoon may allow for enough sun to boost temps into the 70s.
  • Lines of strong to severe thunderstorms then fire up across western Kentucky in the afternoon. Those will then roll eastward across the rest of the state into the evening hours.
  • Damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes will be possible.
  • The greatest risk for severe weather is across the west, but I expect the slight risk area to shift farther east compared to what the SPC currently shows…

Cooler weather moves in for Friday with a stronger blast of cold moving in later Saturday…

Temps by Sunday morning will drop into the 20s with afternoon highs struggling to get out of the 40s.

Monday turns milder with high winds a good possibility. That’s ahead of another strong push of cold air…

That looks like a winter setup and could even produce a snowflake in the mountains. This sets up another hard freeze threat for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

If the European Model is correct, the end of next week is even colder…

That’s literally nuts to see in the month of April.

Check out the temperature departures from the European with each of the above mentioned cold blasts…

Please… No.

I’ve been beating the drums for a few weeks now on what I thought would happen in early April. Green thumbs are on super duper high alert.

I leave you with your storm tracking radar. You can zoom this in to show any storm in the country, and you can see live cams from storm chasers…

Enjoy the evening and take care.
