Good Thursday, folks. We have a very active weather day taking shape across our part of the world. High winds and severe thunderstorms may cause issues for many before the day is over.
A few quick notes on the day:
- Winds today are going to be very gusty, with or without thunderstorms. Gusts of 40mph will be possible.
- Morning showers and storms will give way to afternoon breaks in the clouds with temps spiking into the 70s for some areas
- As our cold front enters from the west, expect lines of thunderstorms to develop in the west. Those storms will then surge eastward across the rest of the state this evening.
- The greatest threat for severe weather is across western Kentucky, but the entire state could see some big boomers
- Damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes will be possible.
- The extent of the severe weather will be determined by just how much sun we can get this afternoon. If clouds and showers persist, that will act to lower the overall threat.

Today’s risk area
I will have updates as needed with the very latest on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm.
Have a great day and take care.
Thanks CB! It will indeed be interesting to see how fast skies clear this afternoon which could provide more fuel for later storms. At least any flooding issues should be isolated as it’s been rather dry as of late, although western parts of KY and especially TN have had some heavy rain since last night. At this time, looks like the higher tornado threat will be in the deep south and reaching as far north as about Nashville and Knoxville. Stay safe!
It has started raining in Somerset. Started out as a sprinkle but its picked up a bit now. Looking at the radar, it looks like a pretty heavy band is getting very close. Hope the atmosphere will stabilize enough to keep the storms below severe levels. I don’t mind some thunder and lightning, but when you put hail and tornadoes in the mix, I can just leave that alone! 😉
Everyone stay safe and dry today, and watch or read Chris’ updates. thanks Chris or keeping us informed. You and the whole KYT weather team are appreciated more than you know! Have a great Friday Eve everyone!
This wind is worse then any severe storm !!
Did you know? From the SPC…While Kentucky’s 30-yr annual tornado count stands at 21, the 10-yr average is at 31.
Staying cloudy for now, but the line looks decent out west. If clouds hang tough, severe storms won’t be as big an issue.
Maybe in your neck of the woods but sun has been out where I’m at.
The line has intensified and here in Lincoln Co., sunshine is coming through.
Been sunny a long time today here in clay county.
I guess the SPC thinks Severe Thunderstorm Watches are overrated:)
Watching the system fall apart before reaching SE KY. Man do we need the rain here. It appears we might get a 10 minute T-shower here in Harlan by 10PM, but I am probably posting over 2 inches down for the month, unless we get a very heavy amount of rain in a very narrow span of time. Right now, I am at 2.29 inches for the month while March averages around 4.60 here. I know, you all will start calling me a “drought monger” like last year, but Central and Western KY’s weather is so different than what we see in this part of the state!!!
I really think SE KY should not be included as part of KY: The weather, climate, topography, culture, economy for good measure…the list goes on…is so different than the rest of the state.
So far tje storm threats so far this season (for the most part) have been a welcome bust. I do not recall this many busts in a row. Hopefully we continue the lucky streak.
I just heard a really loud roaring sound over Masterson Station in Lex. Similar to a plane taking off for a good 5+ minutes straight but no planes in the sky and too loud and too far of an area to sound like that. Sky is clear. Is there some weather phenomena that would cause this? My other thought is gas lines about to burst. They make a rushing sound like that.
