Good Thursday, folks. FINALLY, we have a busy weather day taking shape across the commonwealth of Kentucky. A strong cold front is brining booming showers and thunderstorms, gusty winds and a big temperature drop. This ends of recent run of obnoxious warm temps.
Today’s showers and storms can put down some decent totals as they sweep eastward. The best chance for strong storms will be across the central and eastern part of the state. Your tracking tools in a bit.
Winds are going to be cranking with gusts of 30mph-40mph possible as the colder air sweeps in from west to east.
Leftover showers get out of town by Friday afternoon with some sunshine returning. Winds will be very gusty and usher in the coldest air of the season with highs in the 50s. Mid and upper 30s are a good bet for many by Saturday morning…
Winds are likely to remain too high for widespread frost to develop, though some patchy stuff is certainly possible.
Saturday is another windy and chilly day with low 60s west and middle 50s east. All of this happens as our storm strengthens across new England. This may put down snow in New England and could cause the first flakes to fly in the highest elevations of the Appalachian Mountains…
That shows some flakes in the high mountains just to our east.
Nice weather returns to the region from Sunday through early next week with highs mainly in the 60s. This will then set the stage for another potent storm system to impact our weather late in the week into Halloween weekend…
The latest GFS has a winter look to start November…
Speaking of winter, the next update will be heavily focused on some of the signs I’m seeing for the winter ahead.
Let’s get back to tracking the one impacting the region today…
Today’s risk area
Make it a great day and take care.
Not good that I am the first one to comment on this new post…suppose to be up by 6:30 and have never fell asleep yet due to insomnia and headache. Hopefully, this annoyingly boring weather pattern will end for a while starting tomorrow with a better night sleep tomorrow night with some heavy rain coming down on my parched ground.
Love seeing the first wet snow in the NE by the way…actually about on schedule up there….hope for fun to start soon.
Next update now please!!
especially central and east? At 7 am, I’m seeing a huge line of showers/ storms well west of Louisville, yet the T storm risks are for central / east today more so than the west.
I can’t wait for cooler weather and finally be able to turn my AC off. It’s also literally been a month since my yard was mowed and I guess it won’t have to be mowed again until spring.
Heavy rain, thunder and lightning here in Lex at 11:30.
Hope you guys east of Western KY gets the soaking. Not much fell here in far western my enough get the ground wet
We are in fairly bad shape here in SE KY. If we could get about 3 to 4 inches, we will be back to normal. We have mandatory water restrictions in part of my county now.
The worst off areas like Chattanooga (near where my parents live) and Huntsville AL are presently only getting cruelly teased with scattered t-showers. 🙁
They need about 8 to 10+ inches in those areas to fully come out of the drought.
The low dew points in SE KY are currently preventing the rain here as the wind blow downward from the mts… not a drop yet…I hope this changes tonight as the rainfall has been way more isolated than was forecasted, so far anyways through this afternon.
I suppose goes the saying of a drought feeding on itself.
But at least some areas are getting some decent rain. Nashville had a brief but good t-storm a few hours ago, even delayed the flight of a work colleague of mine.
Huntsville AL has picked up .74 inch today with another t-storm line on the way. Hopefully these second and third lines will stay intact as they move into east TN and southeast KY.
At least today’s severe wx threat is waning. The SPC is currently only giving a 5% chance of a watch for central/eastern Kentucky and central TN for severe t-storms.
Still, next month is historically a secondary tornado season for our area. True, many Novembers are relatively benign. But there have been some big exceptions…. November 2005 had the F4 twister at Madisonville KY and also the tragic F3 at that Evansville IN trailer park. So it’s good to review safety drills now.
Hit 80 again today in Berea, with of course, much more moisture than yesterday. Ick. That radar REALLY over played the amount of rain coming down here.
Looking at that sloooooooooooow moving 50s air turtling across the state right now. It’s 5 degrees warmer in Lex than WKYT’s own hour-to-hour forecast says it will be for 9pm.
Getting some good soaking rains here in greenup
