Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Let me start this out by saying how thankful I am for everything you’ve done for me and this site over the years. I appreciate all of you… even the haters. 🙂 Ok… let’s get to the weather portion of the program.
Lots of clouds will be noted on this Thanksgiving, with a few rays of sun possible this afternoon. We can also see a shower or two around the central and eastern parts of the state…
A weak cold front drops in here late on Black Friday. This will keep clouds around and may set up a nice temperature gradient from north to south. A seasonal chill will then be in the air into Saturday with the potential for low clouds keeping areas of central and eastern Kentucky very chilly with highs from 40-45 for some.
A major storm system will impact our region Monday into Tuesday. High winds, heavy rain and strong thunderstorms will all be possible. To get an idea of how far reaching this storm system is, watch it pick up a small disturbance near Key West and pull it all the way into our region…
That’s a very impressive setup and one for us to keep a close eye on in the coming days.
Once that swings through here, much colder air settles in across the country as we close November and say hello to December…
We have to watch for another system trying to come underneath that at some point by the middle and end of next week. This is when the European Model goes coast to coast with the seasonal cold…
The potential for a very cold December is there for much of the country. Look at the WeatherBell CFS 5 day chunks of temperature anomalies. Keep in mind, these are in Celsius…
You can actually see the GFS trying to unleash that at the end of its latest run…
I will try to update things later today, but won’t make any promises.
Once again, I hope each of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Stay safe and take care.
Snow!?
When was the last time we had widespread extreme drought across the area?
2007-2008
2012 actually
Thelma Lou says Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. She’s not ready to bite on a cold month of December just yet; signs were there for a cold last two weeks of November….we did get a pattern change but no sustained cold.
Agreed!
Happy Thanksgiving!
We only received a trace here at the house 3 miles east of Harlan, but things are looking good for precipitation area wide next week and beyond on the short-term.
The weather fable of “red sky in the evening, sailor’s delight” tends to be one of the more accurate indicators to go by for no precipitation, but a few times past, I have seen this fail.
Not a drop of precip at my house
Are you in Bell or Knox? The whole SE KY corner from Corbin through Harlan received 0 inches or only a trace from this system.
Knox
Happy Thanksgiving, Chris!!!!
Thank YOU Chris, for all you’ve done for us over the years. You are the go to guy when it comes to weather. Can’t tell you how thankful I am for the blog, not to mention the friends I have made from the blog. I want to wish each and every one of you a very Hapoy and blessed Thanksgiving.
Have a great holiday CB!
Thunderstorm induced asthma? This blew my mind as I’d never heard of it (ignore the weird url, nothing to do with celebrities)

As others have mentioned, the snow friendly December is far from a sure thing. I want this to be a winter of frequent small to medium snows but it feels like it’s going to be more of a few of those and nothing else…unless we get the Bold Prediction ice event, which may be the only notable thing of the winter.
I saw that too on one of the Bing home page headlines. I read the article and it blew my mind too.
Happy thanksgiving!!!! I think a lot of you are gonna be surprised this winter with a couple good snows
Rodger says Happy Turkey Day to all weather weenies! Like that last GFS map. Ready for some winter weather mischief! Rodger in Dodger
