Good afternoon, folks. With such an active pattern taking shape, I wanted to drop by for a bonus update as we kick off the afternoon.
The rain moving in tonight and Tuesday continues to look on the heavy side. The closer we get, I’m wondering if we can get some small stream issues to arise at some point. The NAM and Hi Res NAM show some lofty totals, but differ slightly on placement. Here are the totals from Pivotal Weather…
Considering much of that may fall in a 6-12 hour period, we will be on guard for some small stream flooding.
No changes with the arctic front arriving Wednesday night and early Thursday. Some snow showers and flurries look to be possible through Friday with the very cold air we’ve been highlighting for a loooong time now.
As expected, the models are slowly trying to trend back toward a flatter solution with the weekend system. Instead of cutting a storm into the Lakes, the GFS keeps going weaker and farther south…
Here’s the snow map from that particular run…
Again, watch for this to trend weaker and farther south in time.
Another arctic blast is slated to take over the country as we roll into next week. The new numbers from the GFS by the middle of the week…
The arctic shots are locked and loaded and will continue to dive into the region through Christmas. It’s hard for this kind of pattern not to produce snows across our part of the world. Timing is always the tricky part.
See you for the evening update. Enjoy the day and take care.
Thanks Chris! Hopefully we can see some decent moisture to meet that cold at the right time…
Thanks for the mid-day update! Rodger in Dodger
Whee!!! Let the fun begin! Maybe we will see a little white stuff during the Christmas season! Thanks Chris!
Not complaining one bit. This rain is good. 🙂
Thanks CB!
My wife is so pumped for snow…..especially after last January’s eight inch dumping in Nashville. As some here may know, I’m one of the few on this board that is partial for warm wx. Nevertheless, I still get a kick out of tracking snowstorms.
Just curious, how many here have a spouse/partner with opposite weather tastes of you? 😉 😉
I don’t have a spouse but I absolutely hate snow.
I don’t have spouse either but I love snow
I do. My husband hates snow and I love it!!☃️❄️❄️
Good ‘un, TennMark! I love snow, my wife… not so much 🙂
After college, I had a job prospect in Milwaukee. Factors other than weather led me elsewhere, but it would had been tough for me to endure Wisconsin’s long winters. Tracking the first few winter storms would have turned on the amateur met in me, but after that…..
Kind of ironic that my brother likes winter but he ended up in Georgia 🙂 . His area still got a good snow in January 2011. Same winter storm that crippled Atlanta.
I know the weather words and pretty colors are enticing, but please keep your expectations LOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.
I just can’t see us getting the continual cold + frequent snow that keeps being discussed.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be happy if it does, but I keep getting that feeling that everyone’s going to be pretty disappointed as the month goes on and outright bitter at the end of the year due to all of this hype.
Uh-Oh you use the word “Hype” its forecasting not hype. I won’t be bitter either way. If we get 50 inches of snow or 5 inches of snow it’s all good.
Have to agree with this. December will be a dismal month for snow.
Nobody is hyping, dude.
LD, life goes on one way or another. Don’t be so negative.
I love snow but I definitely do not like cold weather without snow.
Cool on the midday update, Chris. I am ready for the much needed rain and I sure am hoping we can get some snow flying this month.
Look forward to having heavy snow this winter. Retired people like me can watch it snow but don’t have to drive in it. Thank you for your updates Chris.
The pattern that has evolved is a west to east zonal flow. That is 90 percent rain for kentucky for most of winter.some cold shots behind the rain and no snow.
