Good Monday, everyone. It’s another week of frigid weather taking shape for the bluegrass state of Kentucky. As a matter of fact, much of the country looks to be in the deep freeze this week as two more arctic invasions take place. These should also bring winter weather back into the picture.
Rain will wind down from west to east today as colder air moves back in. We could end things with a snowflake or two by the evening…
Arctic air moves back in here by the middle of the week as a front sags in from the northwest. As expected, the models are back to seeing a band of light snow and flurries. The GFS puts a little snow down…
The air coming with this arctic blast will be a lot colder than the last one we went through. Check out the forecast numbers…
Gusty winds will make those numbers feel a whole lot colder! Brr!
This sets the stage for an interesting couple of systems starting Friday and taking us through the weekend and into early Monday.
The new version of the GFS…
That model shows a mix developing then going over to rain from Friday into Saturday. As another arctic front moves in behind it by Sunday, you can see a low pressure developing along it with ice and snow.
The Canadian offers a similar idea…
The temperature ride with that from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning is pretty fun to look at. Check these numbers over a 12 hour period…
That’s a wild temperature ride with another plunge of arctic air moving in for Sunday and Monday. As far as the snow and ice chances go with these systems, we are many days away from figuring all that out.
I will update things a few times later today. Make it a good one and take care.
The warmer temperatures will probably over achieve next weekend as they did this past weekend.
Hate to burst the bubble, were gonna be on the warm side again this weekend system. My local Mets said so and so does the weather channel..Not knocking on CB with 5 days out things can change.
CB has a high percentage of being correct then anyone. I base everything on his forecast.
Am thinking Mr Bailey sees the same. He doesn’t seem overly excited about winter precip in this post. Biggest downer in the winter is cold spell, warm up to rain and then temps crash again – HATE THAT! Rodger in Dodger
agree
Winter weather wise, things are not working out so well for KY at this present time; however, I am glad that we at least have something to talk about after going through 3 months of BORING…rather have active weather than nothing but days of endless sunshine and heat.
Terry – I know right? This year in total has been *the most* boring year weather wise that I ever remember since moving here in 96, aside from the drought in ’99. This is the very reason I think something extreme might happen – because things have to balance out. It may happen this winter, or next spring. I don’t know.
I’m feeling the same vibe. Just hoping mother nature doesn’t balance things out in the spring severe weather season.
I’m kind of on the rain solution for all of next weekend as well, HOWEVER, many decent snows we get start with rain!
Maybe midweek little snow can put down a inch, that would stick around at least till sat. Rain
So single digits potentially Fri. morning, then maybe 60s Sat. afternoon?! Then back below freezing that night..? That’s crazy.
Did someone say Ice?
if we can ever get the cold air to stick around when the moisture arrives ..that would be great
Thanks Chris. Looks like an interesting week ahead of us so I am going to buckle up for the ride. Those temp changes look ridiculous! But people are even more so…saw a woman yesterday in shorts! :0
Anyway, I have battened down and am ready for whatever…I think! 😉
Have a great Monday everyone!
The real story in all this is the frigid temps we have had thus far in December which is the coldest I remember this early in the season. As far as significant snows, we usually don’t start seeing “true” chances til after the first of the year…looks to me like this will hold true IMO.
You are correct on the average snowfall…with the exception of the highest peaks in Eastern KY, most average about an inch or two for December with many years staying 0 inches. The actual average first snowfall is mid December to Jan 1st in most of KY. With the exception of far southern and most of the entire western half of the state, many have already received more than trace since last Friday though…only a trace here in Harlan month-to-date where I live.
As far as extreme cold goes, we really haven’t seen anything in the record territory for early cold. If remember back to 2014, that cold spell in November brought temps as cold and in some cases colder than we have seen thus far.
Looking at the model today, Ugh
Yeah, the Canadian has us getting hit with ice on Sun. Then another system with more ice on Mon.
Don’t count on ice this time of year. More likely to be rain. This is Rodger in Dodger
I am not sure Roger…I think depending on location ice will be present. Ohio river counties especially.
12z GFS has ugly written all over it for the weekend. Just one model run however
