Good evening, gang. Snow showers and flurries are breaking out across central and eastern Kentucky with light accumulations possible tonight and early Friday. The rest of the forecast for the New Year’s Weekend continues to look the same as we have talked about.
I want to focus on what follows that up for next week. Thunderstorms are possible on Monday, but the real focus is on a serious winter pattern potentially developing for the second half of the week into the weekend.
The overall setup remains the same with blocking overtop of a deep and bitterly cold trough across the country…
That same setup can also feature an active southern storm track that turns the corner and up the coast.
The European Model for the end of the week into the following weekend continues to advertise a lot of winter weather…
Verbatim, that run is snow and ice. Don’t sweat things, it changes from run to run. I’m just looking at the overall pattern.

It’s really looking like most of Kentucky will see a ice event late next week.Extreme northern fringes of the state will see moderate snow accumulation. 3-6inchs a good bet.
Yep, at least an inch of it with a few inch topping of snow. Seems far more likely than big snow. I’m sticking to CB’s outlook, partly because I agree and the other is that CB has nailed the last two winters. See no reason to deviate. Warm air aloft is not our friend.
Just a dumb question – Those 2 areas on that map that show the US very cold but way up north, the profiles where “block” is located show deep reds. What are the actual temps in those areas showing “block?”
Additionally, do you believe this is going to be sustained cold? By that I mean weeks of cold.

The temp colors on the map are “compared to average.” It doesn’t depict that Greenland, Alaska and other areas of Canada are in any way going to be warm by our standards but will be MUCH above normal compared to average for those locals. Yes, it could actually get colder here for a short time compared to areas in the far north…Remember Feb 2015? When it was below zero in KY, many areas in Alaska were warmer than us briefly but that isn’t what the maps are conveying.
To answer your second question, it is not set in stone yet if this will be a very long duration cold event for the lower US.

Back during the 1980s, one of my relatives was stationed at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks Alaska….roughly where “blocking” could happen soon on the map above. Fairbank’s average January temperatures are about zero as a high and minus 15 as a low. Again, average…..and that’s degrees Fahrenheit, not Celsius! If wintertime temperatures got into the 30s, some people would wear short sleeves.
Way too early to say much…many times, a set-up depicted on the current model runs would favor central and points on west and north in KY fairing a good hit and leaving poor SE KY and starved out TN wish casting.
On a more positive spin, a track just a little farther south and east could give my region and points south a good hit and skim the rest of the state.
Personally, I like the region wide direct hits were most get in on the goods but that rarely happens; almost always, some will be left out of the winter storm(s) to come!
Forget much thought into next week until at least about Tuesday!
So do I need to get the kids sleds?

The flat non blade type also work better if by chance we get a lot more than a few inches at once.
