Good evening, folks. Old Man Winter is about to make a triumphant return to the bluegrass state over the next several days. This comes with arctic air and our first widespread snowfall from Thursday into Friday.
It’s our first “First Call For Snowfall” of the season…
For those of you not familiar with how I do things, I put out a first call, then update it and then throw out the “Final Call For Snowfall” before the event starts.
I will start by saying, this looks like an overachiever and I may be underdone in a few spots. Areas of eastern and southeastern Kentucky can see some local 4″ amounts. The GFS shows this well…
Some of the individual members of the GFS Ensembles are also showing a bigger event…
The European Ensembles are made up of 51 different members. Here’s the average snowfall from those 51 different runs…
That’s pretty healthy to see from that many different runs.
The Hi Res NAM also shows some healthy totals, but is likely way underdone in the southeast…
Slick travel is likely to develop Thursday and carry us into Friday as arctic cold temperatures take full control.
The next system is still forecast to just brush southeastern Kentucky, but there is still some wiggle room on the models with this one.
Overnight lows this weekend into Monday can drop into the single digits for much of the state.
I will have a new call for snowfall on WKYT-TV tonight at 11 and on the blog with my late night update.
Enjoy the evening and take care.
Let’s hope for an overachiever Thursday!
And a NW shift for Saturday’s system.
I can feel the teachers and students snow dancing all across the state 🙂
Bubba, this is a strange system on Thursday it’s like a Alberta Clipper just without Alberta.
It’s one of those imposters storms
True dat. CB does not seem too thrilled though with the weekend snow chances.
Thanks CB. Thursday/Friday looking good for a bit of snow. I’ll take it! All models have weekend system in the deep south and CB obviously believes that system to be out of reach for anything significant so it’s time for the rest of us to put that one to rest already. 😉
Not quite yet but almost there
Wait a minute now, he did say there was some wiggle room. LOL. Still not onshore to get all the data needed, but I will say I have my hand on the towel.
It ain’t over Mick!!!
Not exactly a big boost for chances 😉 Ironic the wimpy Thursday event is now probably the “big” event” for the area. Ankle biter time!
Thanks Chris I will take any snow I can get.
I must admit that 18z Hi-Res NAM is really liking the I-64 corridor for Thursday.
Can you link it please? Ty

Thanks
I’m a school us driver and me and the other drivers, plus the teachers and secretaries are all getting our dance on
Bus
Thanks Chris….let the fun begin! Thanks for the update.
Tony Cavalier said this winter would be a disappointment
for snow lovers but we might have an ice storm event
(as CB has predicted). Here’s hoping neither of those
pan out…
Yep. CBs winter outlook was not a lot of snow and more of a chance for big ice event.
So we are talking big snow in Tennessee and Georgia for the weekend? Of course it would miss us in KY.
It’s still too far to tell. Remember how previous storms have looked like a bulls eye for most of KY, then headed north or elsewhere? We just need to wait and see. I do think seeing the “First Call for Snowfall” is fabulous.
Curious if that south it is not more of the bad frozen stuff instead.
Just looked at 3k high res. For 00 run now the Thursday system is having the bigger snow into central and there ohio. Figures.
“…and there ohio.” What was that supposed to say?
Ok, here it goes the yawn meter has moved!!!….bout a 9.7…hahaha
Need some snow to brighten up the dreary, brown look of things! Hoping the Thursday system is an overachiever for us! We shall see. Thanks for the update CB!
The00 run of the 3 k n a m has shifted the accumulating snow north into southern ohio. That is a good sign for the weekend storm shifting nothhwest
Nope. I’m really not trying to be the debbie downer here but no matter what this first system does, the weekend system is not moving close enough to do anything other than maybe graze the southernmost counties of the state.
No matter how much snow lexington and versailles gets they’ll put down enough salt to last until the spring. Much as I hate to do it I’m going to have to introduce my new truck to the brine slime.
This winter is looking like a few ankle biters at best for this area, so would not be surprised that salt is more common. Really sux jogging when the salt is accumulated on the roads and the wind picks up. Depressingly salty.
So how much more snow for central
I use to get the blog updates in my email but they stopped. Anyone know how to get them back?
You can’t
I can’t get the blog at all now. I keep getting a popup from the Herald Leader that says I have to pay.
Ready for summer already!
Let’s hope we all get at least 3 inches of snow. BOTS!!
