Good Friday afternoon, everyone. Light snow continues to fall across southern and southeastern Kentucky as we watch a bigger system potentially impacting that region early Saturday. I will touch on that in a moment, but I also want to issue a Frozen Pipes ALERT or the next few mornings.
With snow on the ground and arctic air in place, areas that get in on some clearing overnight will see temps go below zero. The short term Hi-Res Models are jumping all over this. Here’s the RAP at 7am Saturday…
The HRRR model only goes out to 4am, but it is well on its way to showing similar numbers…
Temps on Saturday now look to stay in the low and middle teens for much of the day. Wind chills will be near zero. Low temps by Sunday morning will tank, again. Below zero readings are possible across much of the region. Take precautions to prevent frozen pipes, check on your neighbors, livestock and outdoor animals.
The snow potential in the south and southeast continues. Several areas are picking up an inch or less today, and this is covering roads. Why wasn’t a Winter Weather Advisory issued for this? I’m the wrong person to ask for that since I’m still trying to figure out why Jackson and Louisville stopped the advisory area-wide at 11 last night… as it was still snowing with most roads still snow covered. I digress.
The big winter storm to our south and east is going to graze southeastern Kentucky. This “graze” can mean anything from a covering to 6″ of snow. It’s literally THAT close of a call for the Virginia border counties. The NAM is just a bit east, but the GFS came west…
The GFS has 6″ snows in southeastern Kentucky.
The Canadian is just a touch less…
It should be noted, the short-term Hi Res Models are indicating the snow shield getting into the southeast. I will have a First Call For Snowfall on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm.
The pattern over the next few weeks has the “Bold” look to it. It’s a volatile one that can cause big temps swings and some issues. Ugh.
I leave you with regional radar and will update again this evening…
Have a great afternoon and take care.
Thanks Chris. It has been snowing here most of the morning. Not big flakes but heavy at times. It is finally about to quit but the main roads got covered again and were having some issues with being slick in spots. Side roads are a hot mess! The grazing we got this morning was an overachiever in that it came a bit further north than they thought. But that is ok. 😉 Unfortunately I have to work tomorrow so I don’t look forward to getting out that early in the cold.
Still say if we could get that storm to jog a little further west and north it would be sweet! Have a great afternoon and stay warm and safe!
These systems are fun to follow. Thanks for your detailed reporting Chris! Let it snow all season
How far north can this snow reach?
Southern Indiana would be nice 🙂
I hate frozen pipe weather. Few things are more frustrating than plumbing problems.
What could the big temperature changes be showing? Wondering whats ahead!
Some models showing a MAJOR potential ice storm for parts of the midwest a week from Sunday, Jan 15th. That’s Mr Bailey’s definition of BOLD. Longggg ways off! Rodger in Dodger
Yes, but ice outlooks tend to be more accurate further out. Why, I have no clue. If Kentucky is the fence- bleh.
My mom and aunt are planning to drive to Pigeon Forge on Sunday to work take Christmas decorations down at my aunt’s cabin. This ought to be interesting to see how Eastern Tennessee handles that much snow tonight.
I’m going with the NAM on this one for tonight. It is consistently far more reliable within 24 hours than the GFS. If 06Z NAM moves back NW, SE KY may see some decent accumulation, otherwise I believe we will miss the southern storm.
Kids enjoyed a quick sledding adventure this morning. These bitterly cold temps make it hard to enjoy though!
I’m no weather man (that’s why I depend on your forecast Chris) but I don’t see anything in the next two weeks.
But again, this is why you get paid the big bucks!
Enjoy the snow, stay warm and SE KY I’ll be pulling for ya on the snowfall numbers.
I’ll keep saying it over and over. Bell, Harlan and Letcher Co’s better watch out!!!! It’s coming tonight!!! Been saying in for two days now!
BOLD rain and BOLD warmth and BOLD severe thunderstorms next week.If you live north of the ohio river big bold ice cometh. Central and northern Ohio record snowfall potional.
EF….just curious of your locatiion?
Thelma Lou is pulling for you on this one….she don’t want ANY ice!
Extreme NKY here. I want snow or rain. NOT ICE.
Also reporting in from the COV in NKY. I second not wanting ice of anykind.
CB was implying Kentucky might be the fence, which should mean mainly snow north of it, ice in the middle and mainly mix further south. The fence = ice
Depends of course on surface temps.
Fence = Ice
20minutes south of Louisville
Cool.
Hum me to.
GW…..if you are still out there.
Verga – precipitation showing on radar in your hood that is not actually hitting the ground. We had a verga storm here in Louisville for 2 hours yesterday morning.
Ankle Biter – 3 in or less of snow. Looks like another ankle biter on its way.
Blowtorch – Was actually a handle by a KWC follower that would always say it was going to be warmer than forecasted by CB. Now it is used to describe that one person.
FENCE – depending on location it is generally the other side of the river IMO. Wheather it be the Ohio or Kentucky it always snows on the other side of the FENCE with cold rain on our side.
Don’t forget the dome!
Seems like there are a few more of these….
Rolocoaster to just name one – again, after a person. Specifically to address the flips from one comment to another. Love the guy 🙂
I meant a checklist of words, like a game, for these snow posts. These words show up all the time in whiny posts about no snow. It would be fun to see how many you could check off in each update because these terms show up ALL the time here…lol.
This stupid auto spell is killing me
The snow that came yesterday came with a vengeance it got bad fast. It has snowed all morning at my house in Jenkins Kentucky. It has finally dwindled down to fine snow but it’s still snowing. Thanks for the outlook on the Saturday storm we may get that 6 inches. Everyone stay warm please…
It sure looks on radar that snow is pointing back north toward Kentucky. Any of you weather watchers seeing that?
I do! Very curious! I think a lot on the radar is verga though
Is Montgomery county going to see anymore snow tonight or tomorrow???
Winter storm looks to be going more North West now!
DECEMBER WAS ABOVE NORMAL TEMPS FOR ALL OF KY.
WOW. HMMMM. AMAZING
But we’ve got Chris!
