Good afternoon, gang. The ugly weather keeps on keepin’ on across the bluegrass state. Even as temps take off in the days ahead, things still aren’t going to be very pretty. Rounds of showers and thunderstorms will come calling… Each… And… Every… Day.:(
While the March week of weather is going on, Old Man Winter is lying in the weeds and ready to pounce.
Let’s start with the current weather. I’ll let the tracking tools do the ugly talking for me…
Highs Monday and Tuesday will surge toward 60 and then into the 60s. Gusty southwesterly winds will blow, with showers and thunderstorms increasing.
We may catch a chilly break on Wednesday, but more showers and thunderstorms work in later Thursday and Friday. All tolled, another 1″-2″ of rain is a good between through Friday. Can you say soggy?
We continue to watch this pattern evolve toward another back loaded winter. One of the cool ways to illustrate this change is to look at the 500mb anomalies for the next 10 days on the European Model. Watch how the big warm ridge across the USA gets pushed north into Canada. As it does so it strengthens into a healthy block allowing bowling ball winter systems to roll eastward across the country…
That first massive cutoff low blows up across the region about a week from now. Watch how the surface low rapidly deepens toward the northwest…
Yowza!
Here’s a different look at that storm system…
Cutoffs like that can produce some very extreme weather and that is something we will be mindful off as we go through the next week.
Beyond that, the ensembles continue to go toward something like this…
Have I mentioned I’m not a fan of back loaded winters? 😉
Enjoy your evening and take care.
I do know CB has always said he was a snow lover no matter what, and is just as eager for snow as we are. This lengthy period of rain and warmth is not horrible, but unexpected and disappointing for snow lovers when we know that had temperatures been under 30°, we would have had quite the snowfall!
Not if you read CBs winter outlook 🙂 Panning out like he said so far and seems lack of snow could be the theme. We will likely see cold spikes for a few days or more, but most moisture will be gone during that. We seem in fence mode like we were prior to the past two winters.
Pretty good chance the salt totals could be higher than actual snow accumulation this winter. I have confidence in CBs outlook, even though he appears to be blinking right now 😉
You will see every storm in this comming set up will bring with it over running warming and lead to rain and some frzz.rain. And I went to Ohio state for two years of meteorological study.but I am not a meteorologist.
You should start your own blog.
Exactly. (Eyeroll)
Did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?
There is your problem. You went to Ohio state
Eye roll. My dad follows the blog too. 30+ years as a meteorologist in the military, with advanced degrees in meteorology and physics. Please go back to school,
Like are chances coming in a few weeks. Like the looks of the Euro with the cutoff low. Then one follows that one up the apps and all of Kentucky gets in on the snow fun. Thanks for update CB
Very cool info and maps Chris! Thanks so much.
Backloaded winters? Is this a new term? First year I’ve ever heard of that word.
Anyway – it’s Jan 15 – again mid-January – and we want spring already?
Granted – this overcast gloom is getting old. But I’m not ready for sticky humid boring nothingness like we had last year.
I am lol
Hopefully this boring weather will be over soon.
Even with the looming “back-loading winter,” we will really get 6 weeks of average to below average winter temps…possible but very doubtful. We will likely end up like last year with about 3 good weeks of winter…KY is just not a harsh winter weather state. We do get occasional bad winter storms and a few days of 0, but we really can’t complain as over 50% of the US has worse winters than us!
I just want the pattern to turn to temps below normal. We keep having above normal temps, and the cooler than normal weather only lasts a few days. This has been the case since the latter part of 2015. If it brings snow, even better.
I HATE heat! I want at least one good snow, here in SCKY!!! ❄❄❄
Oh goody…heavy wet snow in the making if temperatures produce..Makes the best snowballs..Anyways, all the moisture coming from the gulf can lead to the warm nose..We shall see..
Forget too add severe weather possible also..Looks interesting..
Thanks for the updates CB! Sure would love to see the sun again for a bit. Forgetting what it looks like!
Just saw a local forecast in the Huntington WV area with temps predicted at 70 or higher next weekend. Granted it is 7 days out. But forecasts predicting warm weather rarely miss like the ones predicting cold do.
