Good evening, folks. Rain has returned to the region and it will keep rolling on and off for much of the next week. This is one of the wetter patterns we have seen in a long long time, but I’m sure someone will yell drought as soon as we get one dry day. 🙂
Some rumbles of thunder may join the party overnight…
Wednesday looks like a chillier and drier day, but the clouds will be tough to shake. Enjoy it because more rain and thunder sweep in here from the southwest Thursday into Friday.
That will set the stage for a MUCH bigger system moving in for later this weekend into early next week. I’ve covered the upper level part of this for a while, now it’s time to start focusing on the lower levels. Expect this to spawn a massive slow-moving storm system right on top of our region. Look at this on the European…
High winds, thunderstorms, heavy rain giving way to high winds, colder air and the potential for a pocket of rain/snow or snow.
Cutoff lows can get a little wild and this one has some potential to do just that.
The next week can unleash another 2″-4″ of rain across the bluegrass state. This is pretty crazy.
I’ve also been talking about how the cutoff system likely gets the ball rolling toward another back loaded winter with cold and snow. Well, here’s what the Euro shows following that upper low by the middle of next week…
Given the block showing up over the top, watch for that system, similar to the one this weekend, to trend farther south.
The ensembles 5 day temp average to end January…
That’s cold!
Enjoy your evening and take care.
Warm, rainy, and cloudy for the next ten days. What an unusual streak for winter.
lol. Love the sarcasm in you first paragraph Chris. Drought! Speaking of which, next time someone tells me in person that “we need rain”, I’m going to punch them in the mouth on the spot! I would truly love drought conditions at this point.
Well we usually don’t have a drought in the winter..But if anyone denies a drought this last summer and fall there badly mistaken..Working on a farm can tell you all about lack of rain..Some really don’t understand unless you’re actually working with soil..So really don’t get the drought comment’s..Ask the people in Tenn. about a drought..lol..
I’m sure some place in KY there wasn’t a drought and that will be all that’s needed to verify that there wasn’t one in the state for some people’s agenda.
Kinda like if everywhere but X neighborhood got snow, then it was a busted forecast. 😉
We did have a drought during growing season and now lots of rain during dormant fall/winter season -which means lots of mud. Still better than nothing 🙂
Thelma Lou says this one has all the looks of a pattern ripe for colder temps a week to 10 days away, but then trending milder as the days approach. Nothing but a hunch to back it up, but the normal to below cold may only last 2-3 days at a time.
Long enough for an Apps runner to deliver a thumping.
A few lightning strikes now in far western parts of Kentucky and Tennessee.
…..and I kind of doubt it is thundersnow 😉 .
The truth is that the pattern that we had in January will resume in February. Very small chances of a snowstorm. Very small window of opportunity before the ridge builds back in.Hope for better winter next year.
Will.you please just shut up…you’re about as annoying as AccuWeather
This is coming from the same person who claims a few weeks back that big snows would happen in February.
I miss the Rolocoaster. He has posted maybe once in the past few months that I notice.
This weather is so void of good snow chances, no Rolocoaster posts. Truly a lame winter so far from that point.
I miss him too. I wonder if his goat is OK? Remember how he used to talk about it! So much fun reading those posts back in the day…
Seriously!!!!
After a very wet week ahead, looks like us winter weather fans may get to finally track some action!
I hope your not baiting us into returning to your blog by mentioning snow like TWC… I know you wouldn’t do that though lol it’s just there’s been so many systems that lost track or turned to rain that I’m not hopeful for snow.
I am thankful for all this rain.. it was the driest fall I can ever remember here in southeast part of the state. Many creeks/streams around here are still not running as high as normal for mid winter..
Looks like more of the same. A week to ten days of mild and rain followed by three or four days of mostly dry cold, where somebody might see a couple of flurries.
