Good Saturday, everyone. The weather is calm across the region for now, but that all changes in just a few days. That’s when our pattern goes from zero to 60 with a big storm system ready to throw some wild weather in our direction.
Before that swings in here, let’s talk about our Super Bowl weekend. Temps today are frigid to start with readings in the teens. Afternoon temps climb into the 40s for the south and west with 30s in the north.
Clouds thicken up this afternoon and evening as a weak system sweeps in here for Super Bowl Sunday. That can produce a very light mix of rain and snow early on, but it’s not going to be a problem as temps climb deep into the 40s.
Rain arrives on Monday and we could hear some thunder by Monday night. This is on the nose of some warmer air sweeping in from the southwest, as a powerhouse storm comes together in the plains states. As that storm strengthens and heads into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes, it will bring some wild weather our way.
Here’s a breakdown:
- Temps will spike into the 60s on Tuesday on that strong southwesterly wind
- Showers and thunderstorms will crank and some of those storms may be on the strong side.
- Wind gusts Tuesday into Tuesday night can reach 40mph-50mph at times. Yowza!
- As the front swings through, temps drop nearly 40 degrees by Wednesday morning. That’s when readings hit the 20s and likely stay there for the rest of the day.
- Some wraparound snows will be possible on Wednesday.
Here’s what that whole mess looks like on the GFS…
Another system then dives in behind that later Thursday. The models say this has the chance to put down a swath of snow…
After that moves through, temps should shoot right back up ahead of another strong cold front…
Up and down, up and down, up and down.
I will have another update later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Wow 12 deg here at my house in Flatwoods Ky. (Greenup Co.) this morn.
To bad this winter couldn’t have flipped 180 degrees. When it was cold the precipitation shows up when it was warm it was dry. We would have record snowfall amounts. Oh well I am now officially ready for spring. I am over this roller coaster ride. Thanks for the update CB.
Made it down to 10 at my house this morning.
I know it’s February 4th, but this winter has been a dud so far. It hasn’t quiet worked out as the winter predictions were laid out. I’m ready for spring. Let’s write this one off
I don’t expect any changes in next weeks weather. The next system will weaken as it moves into the mid west. Most of the energy will stay North and west of Kentucky. Rainfall will be light and scattered around the state. As with all systems this winter the cold air behind this system will not have the moisture to produce any snowfall. This is due to a large anti-cyclonic pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico, that when it moves east it brings warm, moist air into our region and when it moves west it brings colder air into our area and cutting of the moister form the Gulf. This is why we are not having any snowstorms this winter. Alberta Clippers have to collide with the sub-tropical jet to make major snowstorm. La Nina winters which we are having puts the sub-tropical jet in neutral or absent state. El Niño are the opposite.
Hey, it is what it is! Let’s ride this crazy pattern and hope for a bonus snow. Thanks for all you do Chris.
Special shout out to Coffee lady, we need your positive energy on here!
Go Cats!
Speaking of needing positive energy 😉 Sickness, be gone!!
Yeah man! Tons of sickness, bugs, flu and viruses abound. Hope you feel better soon BubbaG.
I’m going to stay positive about getting a snow storm before winter is over
I wish we all could feel the same and for the feeling to pay off, unfortunately, I’m just not enthusiastic.
GFS bringing back something for the TN valley. Canadian has something too. Depends on how much of the SW gets captured in the northern stream. Very sad that it’s been reduced to this after all the GFS ensemble excitement a couple of weeks ago…
Thanks Chris! Hey fellow weather lovers! Been having a lot of fun with nasty viruses and ear infections the past couple of weeks. From the looks of the comments, I have not been alone! I know its February, but I still think we can get a good snow. Will we? Don’r know, but I will never say never when it comes to weather in Kentucky. BubbaG for your sake, (and mine and a thousand others) I wish it would get cold and stay that way for at least a good little while. We really need the cold air to balance out the bugs and germs It seems like we haven’t had a lot to get excited about so far, but there is still time, and I’m still a kid at heart, so….I believe it will snow, I believe it will snow, I believe it will snow…(feel free to join in at any time…) Have a great Saturday everyone and GO CATS!!!.
“Backloaded winter” seems dead at this point. Mr Bailey has mentioned some type of winter event before spring can take off, but I’m not seeing it (and neither are the models). We’ve had some nearly snowless winters in the past but they’ve been few and far between. This one’s gonna go down as really bad. Rodger in Dodger
