Good Monday, everyone. A big storm system is coming together across the plains states and this will bring a little taste of wild weather to Kentucky. It’s a battle of spring and winter, and that means some pretty big fluctuations in our weather.
Today is a windy and mild day with highs from 55-60 in most areas as our flow turns to the southwest. That will bring an increase in showers and thunderstorms from southwest to northeast. Some of those storms this afternoon and evening could be strong or locally severe in the west. That’s the area the Storm Prediction Center will be watching…
I will have all your tracking tools in a bit.
The threat for strong and severe storms will then extend farther eastward across the rest of the region into Tuesday. Here’s the latest outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…
Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats to be on guard for. Even without storms, winds can gust to between 40mph and 50mph at times.
Colder air is slower to arrive on Wednesday and that will lead to a big temperature gradient across Kentucky. With the slower moving front, the models try to develop a wave of low pressure along it, leading to a swath of rain and snow late Wednesday into Wednesday night. The GFS is pretty robust with this…
Other models are nowhere near as strong as that system. That’s a healthy shot of cold coming in behind whatever system sweeps through here, but it has zero staying power. Southwesterly winds kick back in later Friday with temps making a run at 60 once again. That’s ahead of another storm system set to bring gusty winds, thunderstorms, a big temp drop, and the chance for some snow. Sound familiar?
I will update things later today. Until then, let’s track today’s action…
Today’s risk area
Enjoy the day and take care.
Looks like ohio may get a sneaky significant snowstorm wed.night and Thursday. Rain for kentucky per usal.
This has been a frustrating winter for snow lovers…Hoping for at least one big snow…
Sadly for most of us, not seeing that happen. Will be very surprised if we even see a one inch event of snow actually on the ground at once. The snow bar has been lowered to Honey Boo Boo level.
CB has had some form of blog for 15 years? I have followed all along and do not recall a year with not one snow threat mode. Heck, we have not even got a post about a chance for a threat mode, yet alone an actual threat mode for snow.
Normally I would rationalize with Cats basketball, but even that is verging towards Honey Boo Boo.
Even in the low total years we missed five or six storms that moved NW a few days before. We have not even had a one week out “chance ” this winter. We used to complain about an underperforming clipper only giving a couple of inches but even those have barely left a dusting for most of the state.
I’m ready to be done with it and move on to spring. I’ve enjoyed the tolerable weather the last three months.
I’ll be happy if winter holds off until after Valentine’s Day. I have 53 dozen cupcakes to deliver Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. After that, it can snow oats!!
That’s a lot of cupcakes!
Who knew 2017 would have two March’s in it.
There are worse things in life than not getting snow.
“Deep Thoughts” by Jack Handy…..haha, for you SNL fans
Yes… Like it being in the 60’s and storming during winter… Especially when you’re a migraine sufferer. Blah.
Yeah, but this is WEATHER BLOG so there’s that. Geez! Rodger in Dodger
Like the tornadoes folks got to the south of Kentucky. Much more rough time for them so far.
Even Seattle is getting hammered with heavy snow. Their seasonal snow totals have exceeded many locations in our region.
Portland (OR) has also been hit hard all this winter. They normally only get about 4 inches snow a season, about the same as Memphis TN. Portland OR has been a bit more like Portland Maine this season…..and IIRC even Portland Maine has had relatively little snow this season.
Spring marched in last month, has fought tooth and nail to stay. is winning that battle, will win that war by mid or late Feb and drop the mic…
Everybody is right, it doesn’t look too promising for a major snowstorm in Kentucky this winter season, thanks to La Nina. Lets focus on the current weather which seems to be erratic. It is raining south of the state which will rob the moisture. This could be a trend towards a drought this spring. This is good news, bad news. Good news, we may not have severe weather, bad news our gardens may suffer.
What?!? It’s raining south of the state which will rob the moisture. This could be a trend towards a drought this spring. What in Gods name are you talking about??
Chris is there any hope at all for any snow before the “winter” is up? Do you see anything indicating that we may have a period of any real winter weather like one would expect this time of year?
This is really sad?? I watched you last night at 11:00 and glad to see you on. You and Jim and the gang do a fantastic job and you’re the only local news I watch.
Sounds like a busy weather week. Once again, if we had the cold with this moisture…. Yet, it is still winter, and things can change quickly.
Not in this pattern we are stuck in things will not change
Prelude, you are starting to sound like my posts from two months ago, welcome aboard
Ironic, but appears for reals. I thought we had nowhere to go but up (prior to last two winters with big snows), but this one takes the lack of snow prize.
Well, unless next year is zero snow.
I think we are all now in the same mindset except maybe 2-3 regular posters who are still holdouts for hope. Who knows…maybe a surprise March snow (doubtful) but Im with Prelude on this one, not without this pattern breaking and I dont see it breaking til summer. Whats more, it seems our winter patterns seem to hold true for 2-3 winters in a row. I’ll be that guy… I wouldn’t be surprised to see a repeat of this winter for 2017/18.
One of those atmospheric moments, I guess. Pavement appears wet in places yet no rain or drizzle has fallen today. Car completely dry. I heard an explanation before, but since I can not remember it, I’ll put this one in the Twilight Zone files.
Starting to here the spring time birds singing more. I like to here the frogs also when it warms up. That’s a good sign spring is not far away.
I heard frogs two weeks ago.
