Good Monday, everyone. I warned you this pattern was about to get very active and mother nature continues to kick things up a few notches. Coming on the heels of Friday’s severe weather, we have a bigger outbreak of severe storms taking shape over the next few days.
Let’s start with what’s going on out there today.
A few showers are on the move through the first half of the day. These showers are introducing much warmer air surging in from the southwest. As the rains taper today, temps should climb into the upper 50s to low 60s for many…
Warm, moist and unstable air then moves in here on Tuesday. This air is ripe for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop during the day as temps climb into the low 70s.
Explosive thunderstorm development is then likely Tuesday evening into Tuesday night, especially across the western half of the state. Supercell thunderstorms are possible and these can spin up a few tornadoes. That threat may focus a little farther east as the night wears on.
Here’s the SPC Severe Weather Outlook for Tuesday into Tuesday night…
All of this may culminate with a squall line of thunderstorms racing across the state on Wednesday. If that comes together, it would provide us with an elevated damaging wind threat.
With our without thunderstorms, winds are going to absolutely howl from Tuesday through Thursday. 40mph gusts are a strong possibility outside of thunderstorms.
Much colder air comes in behind the severe threat for Thursday. A few snowflakes are even possible with temps in the upper 30s.
The models continue to suggest a weak clipper swinging in here for Friday…
Temps will moderate quickly this weekend with readings taking off once again. This will come ahead of another potent storm system that can bring another severe threat early next week…
Check out the cold and flakes behind that. Sensing a pattern here? This is a very ugly setup for our spring severe weather season ahead.
I will update things later today. Make it a good one and take care.
I still think that the anticyclonic system present in the southeast will act to break up the storm systems. The energy is push north and west into Illinois and Indiana and breaks apart as it moves east. This is what happened last Friday evening. March, I think will show a colder pattern. Have a nice day.
I sincerely hope you are correct!!!
Glad it happened for you on Friday evening, but that most certainly did NOT happen for Berea with that event.
I think he’s talking about widespread severe weather and I’m not sure, but I think he may be talking about the southeast ridge (Bermuda High pressure) that is always there, always!
Storm Chasers Honor Bill Paxton with βTwisterβ Tribute

Is there still much of a chance for a big snowstorm in march or are we out of the woods for such.
This week in Tennessee is Severe Weather Awareness Week, including a tornado drill on Wed March 1.
http://www.weather.gov/ohx/swaw2017
The state of Kentucky was scheduled to have a tornado drill tomorrow (Tue) Feb 28 but it has been postponed until Friday March 1 due to possible severe wx the next few days. Kentucky still has its Severe Weather Awareness Week on March 1-March 7. Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and West Virginia also have drills and awareness week campaigns the next few weeks, here’s a partial list by NWS Paducah:

Drat, left out Virginia (which has its severe wx awareness week in mid-March).
Also, I butchered the date (CB got things right as usual π ) for Kentucky’s rescheduled tornado drill; it’s actually Friday March 3 at 10:07 am Eastern/9:07 am Central.
Guess I didn’t have enough of my morning coffee, especially on a Monday. π
I watched Twister last night to honor Bill Paxton
Looks like typical early spring pattern for ky. Up and down, up and down…but its still nice to be saying SPRING
Late winter
I will stick with early spring for now
I have seen early warmth before in 2007. That turned out disastrous.
It happens, but I think we may be in the clear this year…may have a couple of small cold spells, nothing tragic though
Yeah the normal stuff of course. I’ll start saying SPRING very soon, promised. π
Thanks Chris. I have given up on the snow love we were hoping for. Getting too late to want any snow now. But having said that, I am not that big of a fan of severe weather. I don’t mind a good thunderstorm, but when its dark, and I can’t see outside to watch the clouds, I get a bit antsy. But then, that is why we have Chris Bailey, Kentucky Weather.com and WKYT and the weather team! (Still not a fan of severe at night)
Have a safe and happy Monday everyone. Thanks again Chris. Get some rest., it looks like you may be busy the next few days.
Here in Southern Ohio it has been raining all morning lightly. It’s almost 1:00 now. We are getting 100% of the 30% chance they said we had for today. They nailed it.
My tulip tree flowered by Friday, then most of them got absolutely burned by the freeze and sunlight Sunday morning. What a shame.
Tulips are just now coming up at my place in north Richmond.
If like the last threat we got, should be fairly wimpy. That is good. Not a fan of power killing/destructive threats.
It wouldn’t shock me to see a few tornado warnings this time around. Of course everything needs to line up just right to make that happen. Let’s hope it doesn’t.
Still a lot of cold polar air lock up over Hudson Bay. Fort Churchill has had an extremely cold winter. That cold air tries to move south toward the U.S. but is caught up in fast moving westerlies which push it east toward northern Maine where it collides with warmer North Atlantic waters. This is where winter occurred. Thought, it would be interesting to mention this. Not to concerned about our up coming spring weather events. Looks like the event that quickly moved through here last Friday. It is not too late to have a heavy wet snowstorm. Have a wonderful afternoon.
Well thank you. While I’m sure other factors also played a part, that in a nutshell, is the best explanation I have seen as to what happened to winter
Doesn’t look like it’s going to get too cold between all these upcoming storms. Looks like spring is mostly here to stay. Stay safe in the storms everyone!
