Good Tuesday, everyone. I’m going to continue to hammer home my thoughts on the upcoming pattern being warm and stormy. This setup will likely lead to frequent thunderstorms, with a growing threat for severe weather outbreaks in our part of the world.
Our first full day of spring will feature a cold front swinging through the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be noted, especially in the south…
Temps will stay mild, but chilly winds will blow into Wednesday. Highs tomorrow range from the low 40s in the northeast to the middle 50s in the west and far south.
Thursday starts with another freeze as temps drop into the 20s. Afternoon temps near 60 in the east and 70 in the far west.
Friday looks windy and warm with highs hitting the 70s. Clouds will increase ahead of a storm system rollin in for the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms will become common during this time…
A few strong storms will be possible this weekend. Highs stay warm with upper 60s to low 70s.
This pattern will continue to throw frequent thunderstorm makers our way. Another moves in the first half of next week…
Let’s fire up another big system as we flip the calendar to April…
To illustrate the warm potential in this pattern, watch the GFS Ensembles through the first few days of April…
80 degree highs are possible in this setup, and the models show this next week…
Say it with me… A warm and stormy spring… A warm and stormy spring. 🙂
Enjoy the day and take care.
Yes! Hopefully not too much severe weather, but otherwise I am ready! SPRING IS HERE!
Glad the nights are cool due to the weak pacific fronts coming through to slow down the plant life a bit. At my elevation here in Kentucky every plant, except red maples are still dormant. This will lessen any damage to plants in an April freeze, which happens almost every spring. Looks like the next storms will stay south. Have a great day
80 degrees isn’t SPRING. Never was, never will be. We already missed an entire winter season, let’s try and have an actual, appropriately temped season.
Good thing we didn’t have that back loaded winter that was hammered home as well. Maybe it won’t end being so hot, who knows really at this point?
While you may not have had a back loaded winter at your house, quite a few people in our region did.. When Chris puts out a outlook call as he did for a back loaded winter, he does so for an entire region, not just central/eastern Kentucky.
LD just likes to accuse Chris of hyping stuff up.
Ill take 80s…Heck yes!! SPRING SPRING SPRING!!!!
Today’s severe wx threat will be mainly in Tennessee, but KY counties along the TN line could have a peripheral threat. Strong damaging winds will be the risk with the highest chances, less of a hail threat, very low (if not zero) tornado chance.
Since the late February tornado outbreak, an east trough – west ridge pattern has brought cooler more stable air to our part of the country thus hindering the severe thunderstorm threat. There may be signs this pattern will ease at least somewhat. As Chris has touched on a little bit 😉 , severe wx could be on the uptick again the next few weeks. With this in mind, the states of Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia are continuing their respective versions of Severe Wx Awareness Week (March 19-25), with Virginia also having Tornado Preparedness Day today.

What happened to the heavy rain? Even not so AccuWeather went from 50+ percent down to the 20 percent chance for today.
Its been Sunny and 74 at my house today.
I don’t think anybody outside of New England or California had anything resembling a back loaded Winter. The last snow accumulating snow I had in WV was 1/29/2017 and it was about an inch. Since then nothing but the dreaded backside flurries.
even up here where I’m at ….almost 25″ for the winter , and 5.5″ of that was here in march ….I guess winters like this keeps the averages from going crazy lol
25 inches would have been a decent winter for most of us if we could have had your snow…LOL…I am okay now about this non-event winter as we are in Spring.
Depends on where you are in the region… spent three days getting dumped on in the valleys and mountains of WV last week. Mother Nature has a way of correcting herself. The Mountain West has suffered the last few seasons while we set records… this season… above average snow out there and virtually none here!
The Huntington/Charleston area is always the least likely area in WV to get accumulating snow. The I64 corridor between those cities is mostly a dead zone for snow. Especially the Northwest flow systems.
It figures now we r gonna take a hit with bad weather storms we skated around d everything else… so.. we get what’s left on the weather menu…I just hope it won’t effect gardens too much….
Ive been saying for a couple months now that we would have our first 90 degree day in April…Look at that map…90’s already creeping into mid Georgia (next month KY). Gonna be yet another miserable humid KY Summer
I never thought I ever hate getting on the blog but all this talk about severe weather from Chris is not what I want to see Chris it has nothing to do with you but I think I’m done with the blog maybe until fall hopefully by then we get to talk about something other then severe weather
Marsha, I get you had a rough go of it with severe weather, but you got to understand that CB has a job to do and a obligation to inform the public on what may or may not happen down the road. We are heading into a active pattern and CB would not be doing anyone any justice to sugarcoat something that could be a potential issue. The chances of severe weather are there, will the severe weather become a reality? Nobody knows but if the potential is there its CB’s job to keep you and the public aware. By no means is CB trying to scare you. CB is keeping you and the public informed.
Yes I know that Chris is the best at what he does he would never intentionally scare me or anyone but I hate severe weather the thought of another tornado scares me to death so I just hate hearing about it but I know he needs to kept everyone informed so I will kept up with the weather I just don’t want to come on here and hear about it weeks down the road it’s hard enough knowing about it days before nothing bad toward Chris he’s wonderful for what he’s doing here with this blog
