Good Monday, everyone. We have a very active weather day taking shape for parts of the bluegrass state. Strong to severe thunderstorms will target central and western Kentucky through the evening hours. This action continues to be part of a busy pattern that may target the region with another round of severe weather later in the week.
Today’s storms will develop across the west and roll to the northeast, with the greatest severe threat this afternoon and evening. Large hail and damaging winds will be the main threats to watch for. A tornado or two can’t be ruled out late in the day.
Here’s the current risk area from the Storm Prediction Center…
Storms will exit the region early Tuesday as temps stay mild.
Another potent storm system then works our way by Thursday into Friday. This comes from a big upper level system slowly ejecting out of the southwest. A surge of warm, moist air will be out in front of this, leading to the potential for strong to severe storms…
That’s a potent look showing up and is one for us to keep a very close eye on. Of course, that’s what we do here on the blog.
Back to today’s severe storms threat… I will have updates as possible and on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm.
I leave you with your tracking tools:
Enjoy the day and take care.
Thanks Chris. Hoping the rain holds off here until we get the mower home from the shop! After all the rain we are going to need it! Have a great Monday everyone (if there is such a thing)
I need a good chase to take my mind off of what happened with Kentucky last night.
The suns out where I live. And that’s usually not good when there forecasting thunder storms. Just gets them fired up more.
Agreed. The more sun you have the better the instability. Especially with this set-up for today’s storm potential.
Id be watching for storms that get out on their own today and away from any organized convective activity. Those are the ones that can start trouble.
A warm front past through with showers and a little thunder this late morning, stabilizing the atmosphere at the present. If it, decides to clear we could see thunderstorms developing late this afternoon. I don’t expect any will reach severe status. Most of the energy is beginning to weaken as it moves southeast, while the other part is moving north into Illinois. Have a great afternoon.
This section is for comments related to Chris’s blog post, not to relay ones own forecast. If you have a meteorology degree and want to start your own blog, or even interview for a job on a television station, best wishes. This blog is popular because of what CB says.
Schroeder, how weird Severe Thunderstorms warnings are presently in affect for counties in Kentucky!?! Who would of thought???
I don’t know what part of the state or region outside of KY that Schroder is in but severe weather is likely regionally and nothing will stop this event from unfolding, whether or not comments like this continue…trolling or not….I agree Prelude, the threat for storms is here and occurring as i type with some damage even possible into the wee hors of the morning–CB has talked about this particular event several days ago:)
I can’t help it I just can’t help it…… Some will see thunderstorms this afternoon and some will be severe. You need to stop copying and pasting whatever site your going to because the information your getting it from is absolutely terrible. Look at the wind fields, the shear, helocity values the triggering factors there all there to support severe thunderstorms. Widespread outbreak? No but scattered reports of severe thunderstorms, absolutely. There is a very high likelihood of severe thunderstorm watches being issued. Last time I checked the SPC does not issue watches for the threat of non severe thunderstorms.
May not be widespread, but a few warnings are possible especially down state.
Pretty sure this Schroeder character is some sort of troll..
Yes, any future posts will be ignored.
Agreed! The more people reply to these types of posts, the more it feeds the fire…kind of like being in grade school were kids will start out with name calling that escalates when the offended kid retaliates with a nasty name or response back to the perpetrator until a fist fight eventually ensues!
I think EF5 Snowfall and Schroeder may be the same person.
If he feels the need, Chris Bailey could trace the posts. Other trolls have been traced and exposed in the past.
But CB obviously have far more important things to do at the moment….
So far, a lot of severe hail being reported in western Ky. Up to golf-ball or 1.75″ dm size hail.
We need to remember, if there is moderating to be done on this blog..Chris is more than capable of doing it. If he has saw no ill of Schroeder’s comments then quite frankly people should just leave well enough alone, Having said that, Central and Eastern Kentucky has and will continue to be at threat for Severe Thunderstorms and even an outside shot at a Tornado.
Several downed trees across road from tornado-warned storm in Christian County
Based on radar, severe hail could be impacting Radcliff/Lebanon Junction area…nearby Rineyville already reported 1.00″ dm hail
My in-laws in Bowling Green reported a strong t-storm a while ago, including hail.
50-55 mph winds becoming more common in central Ky. Expect more tree and power line issues along with hail
Two small rounds of hail (pea/small marble and almost pea size on the 2nd round) near highway 80 and 461 in Pulaski county near Shopville within the past 45 min to an hour. No damage.
Great forecast, Schroeder!
