Good afternoon, folks. We have a very windy day with rounds of showers and thunderstorms impacting the region. Some of these can be strong, but this is likely the opening act for some wild weather on the way for later this week. We may go from severe storms to snow showers in a 24 hour period. Yowza.
A potent storm moves into the Ohio Valley on Wednesday, creating lines of strong to severe storms racing across the region. The SPC has much of the state in a slight risk for severe storms…
The 3km NAM shows a healthy line of severe storms racing eastward across the state Wednesday afternoon and evening…
Ahead of that, temps may make a run at 80 degrees on a strong southwesterly wind.
Behind the front… look out. The weather for Thursday and Friday looks about as nasty as you can get this time of year, with a shot of winter weather moving in. Wrap around rain and snow showers will be likely as winds gust to 40mph…
Highs may struggle to get to 40 degrees both days, and I can’t rule out a little slushy accumulation Thursday night across the east. The GFS keeps showing this potential…
That winter shot will be short-lived with much above normal temps returning next weekend. 80 degree high temps will be possible by Monday.
How is that for some crazy?
I will update things later tonight. Make it a good one and take care.
Definitely an interesting weather week. Waiting a little bit longer to plant flowers in pots and hanging baskets.
Thanks Chris. Interesting weather week for sure….good thing I haven’t put all the heavy winter stuff up. (I keep sweaters out but this looks like the thick sweater weather!). Have a great afternoon all.
It is my limited experience that if areas south of Tennessee experience Severe Weather at the same time, they tend to sap energy from any storms north of there. However, If Chris is saying we will have severe weather here, then Im not going to question it..
Absolutely no wonder everyone can’t shake the funk!.. O.o
April 3rd brings back memories and that day made me a storm chaser for life.
April 3 1974 was about a decade before I was born, but it’s both fascinating and sobering to study that day.
Among other things, that day had large tornadoes going through rugged terrain with seemingly little trouble, such as a tornado in southern West Virginia (even traversing the New River Gorge) and near Murphy NC (about a 1300 foot difference between top of ridges and the valley below). At least Murphy NC is relatively close to more flat terrain where tornadic storms develop best, but it’s amazing how a strong tornado develops in southern WV despite the t-storm having to travel a long distance over rough terrain which normally hinders tornado genesis.
Can we fast fwd to Monday?
Well kentucky should be amoung the best tourist states soon, nothing like swimming weather in one day and skiing the next ..⛷…!!
