Good Saturday, folks. We have a wild battle taking shape out there this weekend. A surge of summertime heat and humidity is dueling it out with rounds of strong to severe storms. This fight will then give way to another active week of weather for next week.
Today starts with rounds of big storms across the west and north. These storms are putting down a tremendous amount of rain, causing flash flooding issues. A few of the storms may continue to be severe early on. I will have your tracking tools in a bit.
This afternoon will find temps making a run into the mid and upper 80s for much of the state. For the past week, I’veĀ talked about the potential for a 90 degree temp and that is certainly possible. Scattered storms may still impact the far north and west.
Sunday is another day with temps similar to today. This all changes from west to east as a line of strong to severe thunderstorms sweeps eastward during the late afternoon and evening…
Much cooler air comes in behind this for Monday with showers ending. Windy and seasonal temps then carry us into Tuesday and Wednesday with a small storm chance.
A very ugly setup appears to be in the making as we head into late next week into the Kentucky Derby Saturday…
Widespread gusty rains may develop late Thursday and carry us through Oaks Day and, possibly Derby Day. One thing looks certain, temps will be pretty darn cool around here and for much of the eastern half of the country. Check out how far below normal the numbers get…
I have you set to track whatever storms continue out there today…
Have a great Saturday and take care.
Did a single storm even make it south / east of the Ohio River yesterday?
Friday was going to be a big deal severe weather wise, so I’m glad 99.99% of us missed out on all of that. They look even further north this morning than last night, so that’s great.
You’re chomping at the bit to use the word “hype”.
I think overall there was some hype by some mets. Part of the nature of the media. Just like Power Point slides at work. Gotta have some zing!
Sharp gradient in precipitation amounts…I live in southwest part of Jefferson County about 10 miles southwest of SDF airport…I had 0.75″…airport at 1.20″…a few miles north of Ohio River 4-6″. But just about 20 miles south of the Ohio, barely 0.10″.
True statement. Nobody has ever had a forcast that has panned out 100% and there isn’t anything wrong with being incorrect sometimes.
This IMO has nothing to do with CB. The models typically do a decent job with rain forecasts. Not so in the past two years. Again, JMO.
No it doesn’t i think everybody missed this.
Just a trace of rain in southeast Lexington. This looked eerily similar to the “dome” that keeps snow from falling here. I’m not complaining about missing severe weather and the possible damage, although I like a good thunderstorm but it is incredible with all the technology that a forecast for a region could but so badly. But as I posted elsewhere, Mother Nature never took computer science or meteorology! She just does what she’s going to do.
Had a big boomer here in greenup this morning…poured the rain…folks to our northwest are getting clobbered with heavy rain
Thanks Chris. We didn’t get the severe stuff this round, which is fine with me. Looking at the radar this morning looks like the same picture as last night when I went to bed. Those folks are getting hammered! Flooding concerns for sure! Hope everyone stays safe! Have a great Saturday everyone!
Odd how Derby week seems to always have cooler than normal temps at least every other year. I’ve seen some long stretches of warm go quite a bit below normal during the first week of May. This year looks to be the same.
When did the pattern flip and go rain, rain , rain?? Good grief. And yesterday/last night was a bust What happened computer models??
Even the short term Hi-Res computer models have been just God awful from 6 hours out.
The models seem to be getting just as bad with rain as they are with snow. That does not bode well for snow models either, but for that they are awful anyway. No harm no foul.
You go 15-20 miles north from where I live 3-6 inches of rain has fallen. With flooding and isolated water rescues. Where I’m at just under a half inch.
We had three rounds of rain last night in Boyd County.
I couldn’t be more confused with the weather. No movement in storms at all to the east. If anything, they went farther west last night, and it looks like they are trying to move east north east again. So by this slow movement, I’m trying to understand how all of the sudden, the storms will “race” through here tomorrow and be gone Monday. Based on this weekend, how could that possibly happen as friggin slow as they are moving.
The storms from last night and this morning was caused by a warm front that got hung up just north of the I-64 corridor. Warm front became stationary pretty much all night long thus the very heavy rain totals along and just north of the warm front. Tomorrow event is a cold front coming in from the west which will knock temperatures down for the week.
We so far went from Friday/Saturday get your scuba gear, to whatever. Not good to be a weather person if the tools you rely on choke on a semi regular basis.
They are just models and not magic black boxes. Take data parameter maintenance and regression to make sure they work to some degree.
Sirens going off in Richmond.
A bunch of stuff heading to the border of western Kentucky. Maybe this will stay due east. Seems would have to in order to cold warm to cold. Ingredients for storms of course.
Looks like these storms are going more due north as well, just like yesterdays and this mornings expected systems. Just like the snow. Not recalling that happening before, but probably has.
Wonder if we miss most, except some lighter rain with the cold front…
Currently seeing lighting in Corbin KY on 25E and Corbin Walmart also. Yet… There’s nothing going over Laurel, Whitley or Knox county. Very weird!!!
I checked the radar I m in South Corbin…..we are seeing storms an hour away in Virginia ! Lol
