The Ugly Doesn’t Stop Here

Good Saturday and Happy Kentucky Derby Day. We continue to see some nasty weather moving through the area today, with a frost threat following that up for the next few mornings. After that, there’s a lot of ugly showing up again late next week into next weekend.

A potent system dives in here from the northwest today, on a flow that looks like something from the winter months. This disturbance will touch off scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. Watch for some small hail with this action. Winds will also be gusty as temps stay chilly.

I remain optimistic we can get some breaks before the run for the roses. Keep your fingers crossed on that one and follow it all…

Clouds clear out of here tonight with low and middle 30s delivering some patchy frost by Sunday morning. Highs on Sunday will be in the upper 50s to low 60s with mostly sunny skies. Monday morning is when some parts of central and eastern Kentucky can get in on a light freeze. A few spots may drop into the upper 20s…

That would certainly cause some issues for green thumbs.

Warmer air tries to fight in here by the middle of the week, but it gets cut off at the pass by another ugly setup. This fight leads to an extended period of wet weather. Watch this…

Where was that pattern this past winter? Ugh.

That same battle shows up on the temp maps, with the chill winning out…

That. Is. Nasty.

All of this is courtesy of this upper level setup…

I’ve said it for a week or two, and will keeps saying it… This is a very ugly month of May.

Have a great Derby Day and take care.

    It won’t last forever.

i say the models are over doing the cold, lets hope because they were terrible last winter.

At lease the severe weather is being held back for now.

Thanks Chris. I am over this really cool weather, as I am sure most of us are. But it seems to be camping out for a while so I guess I will keep wearing long sleeves and light jackets. Ah, well, as Jeff Hamblin said, it won’t last forever. I think we are all products of a society that has no patience…we want the great weather, and we want it NOW!!! But there is one who knows a lot more about it than we do, so I will leave it there and let it get handled. Mother Nature is on vacation, and got fooled by warm temps in February. If you remember the old commercials, “it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature!” Maybe she’s mad. 😉 Have a great Derby Day everyone.

It is not that cold. Looks to be much better Derby weather than first expected for Louisville area. Make it a safe Derby and have fun!

It’s 58 degrees out well below average. This was expected weather wise for Louisville on Derby all week so not much better nor worse.
