Good Saturday to one and all. Rounds of storms caused a lot of issues across the state on Friday and more are on the way today. A few of the storms will be severe and can put down tremendous amounts of rain, causing flash flooding.
I will have today’s storm tracking tools in a bit. First, lets talk about where we are going after today.
Showers and storms will sweep across the state on Sunday as a cold front moves in. This front will quickly dry us up Sunday night and Monday, with cooler air moving in. Highs will range from the upper 60s to low 70s.
A few strong storms are possible Tuesday and early Wednesday as a potent upper level system swings through here. This will bring some very cool air for the middle and end of next week, with another cool shot possible a few days later. Watch this…
For late May, that’s pretty darn ugly.
I have you all set to track today’s severe threat and possible flash flooding…
Have a great day and take care.
Thanks, CB! Looks like the SPC is already considering a relatively low tier Tornado Watch early this morning from about southern Illinois to Arkansas very near both western Tennessee and western Kentucky. But damaging straight line winds and perhaps later on large hail appear to be the threats with the highest chances. Chris already mentioned that the flood threat is there as well; as the saying goes, Turn Around Don’t Drown.
Thanks Chris, Those thunderstorms to our west look pretty impressive. I hope they weaken some before they blow through central Kentucky. Looks like more rain on Sunday. At the end of next week, looks more like winter returns. Oh well, the weather will finally get back to our usual summer weather, it always does. Have a great Saturday everyone.
Morning all. It’s a beautiful morning in Somerset! I’m glad we got the yard mowed Thursday night, or we would have had a hayfield! From the sound of it, we may have one by the end of next week! Going to get out today and work in my flower bed and enjoy the dry while it’s here. From the looks of the radar this morning, we’d be wise to get outdoor stuff done this morning and early pm for 2 reasons. 1. The obvious one if you look at the radar, and 2. With the mugginess meter set to be pretty high today, cooler this morning for sure. Thank you Chris for keeping us informed and ready. Have a great Saturday everyone.
This weekend is eerily like the one a month or so ago where Central KY was supposed to get non-stop rain and we’ve had nearly nothing so far and doesn’t appear we will get much until late tonight into tomorrow. LEXDOME rules!
Yep, I think I’ve heard thunder 2 times this entire spring. So far, this year is ending up like last year. We get showers, but no storms.
I heard thunder several times yesterday but never a drop of rain fell.
You were saying? 😉
Car thermometer showed 92 a little while ago.
My backyard thermometer is showing 91
Not a drop yesterday here in east Lexington. Radar looked promising and it clouded over around 7pm like it was about to rain but nothing came of it. So far, today has been mostly sunny.
…and this is why I’m not sold on “smart” sprinkler controllers that override the programmed settings if the forecasts predict rain.
I am monitoring a line of strong and isolated embedded severe storms approaching my location in SW Jefferson County in KY. Ready for wind reports, rainfall amounts, and any significant hail and lightning.
So far, highest wind gust in Kentucky is near Morgantown in Butler County at 50 mph. FF warning for Vanceburg in Lewis County. All-time record crest at Blue River near Salem, IN last night.
Update in Valley Station in SW Jefferson County, warned storm was not a big deal in my part of Valley Station. Winds became briefly strong and swirly (wsw to wnw), gusts close to 40 mph. Heavy rain, some lightning, no hail…rainfall about 0.50″ with this cell…0.70″ since this morning.
Lots of lightening and no storms even close
