Good Saturday, folks. The heat and humidity finally won the day on Friday with the hottest weather of the summer across the region. While today may not be quite as hot, it’ may be in similar territory, depending on what happens with clouds and storms.
Today will be hot and humid with temps ranging from the low 90s east to the middle 90s in the west. Heat index values will hit 100 or better in some of the same areas. We will also be watching the northwestern sky for showers and storms to try and develop. Some of the storms may also be strong or severe, with the greatest chance across the north…
Additional rounds of showers and storms will move in on Sunday as a cold front nears from the northwest. This may give us a better chance for strong to locally severe storms. Here’s the latest from the SPC…
Highs on Sunday are still going to be very steamy and will flirt with 90 with enough sun.
That front slowly drops in on Monday with additional showers and storms. Between now and Monday night, some decent rains may fall across the region…
There’s the chance for some local flash flooding in this kind of setup.
The front now looks to check up across the region, leading to temps only getting to normal for a few days behind it. That happens because another system looks to dive in here by Thursday and Friday with more showers and storms. This is a pretty active looking pattern setting up with several cold fronts showing up over the next few weeks.
This could lead to quite a bit of rainfall targeting the Ohio Valley over the next few weeks…
Make it a great day and take care.
Do other major cities in the USA not have a heat island effect like Louisville? I only ask because, looking at the national temp map, it’s warmer this hour at 5 am in Louisville than in Atlanta and a lot of other areas in the deep south. I mean, wouldn’t Atlanta have a heat island effect as well based on the size of their airport with all that concrete
Same with Charlotte……Louisville is warmer than both of those places at this hour.
In my opinion, Louisville is the heat island national champion
It is. I understand all airports will report warmer than surrounding stations because of the heat island effect, but Louisville almost always wins out of all of them…..
Does the proximity to a river that size (Ohio), particularly one that forms a northern border, come into the physics at play in this sort of effect? I don’t know the answer to your question, I’m just wondering about an apples to apples comparison when looking at airport locations.
It was the Heat Island National Champion, however, the National Weather Service took the banner down due to prostitutes and strippers. 😉
When I lived in NE Ohio, Cleveland Hopkins was always a few degrees higher than any other reporting station. Same idea-large airport with concrete everywhere on airport grounds and close to it, with the airport being a few miles outside of downtown.
At 5:00am, 81 degrees and dewpoint at 76 at Valley Station
Lexington at 77; btw, Fayette county mesonet at 78…and we thought the official site’s thermometer was messed up…..
Working on my 15th consecutive day with no measurable rainfall.
Climate Prediction Center said increased chances for above normal precipitation for our region next week a few days ago.
Thanks Chris. So another summer day? Don’t mind a few of these but as others have said, really could use s little rain. Now that doesn’t mean I am hoping for floods and temps in the 50s in July. But it is July and should be hot, or at least pretty doggone warm. My truck said 96 yesterday snd heat index on my phone was 101. Stay cool today if you can. If you must go out, stay hydrated. Have a great Saturday everyone!
When is this god awful humidity going to subside?
Hoping some of that rain gets to Jenkins Ky. it sure is dry at our house. Thanks Chris for your report. Have a great day folks.
86 degrees and a 76 dew point at 10 AM in the morning. Yeah, you “under performing heat” crowd can get lost.
Everyone remember to check on the most frail of us at times like these, your curly-haired, female friends and relatives who might be on suicide watch right now in this jungle air.
98 degrees at Louisville International hottest day since July 26, 2012 yesterday
I just had about 30 fat raindrops fall give or take and that’s about the extent of just what fell. Did nothing to elevate the temperature I’m thinking all it did was escalate the dewpoint from 77.5 to 78. lol
Anything this early won’t knock temp down the rest of the day sadly
I’m beginning to think those 30 water droplets I received was nothing more than the clouds sweating.
Could that have been your sweat LoL . We had a similar event here it actually cooled it down 10 degrees
Sad part about this was as quick as the showers popped was just about as quick as they died off.
One does have to wonder…it’s between 93 and 94 at my house in Valley Station, dewpoint in the 73 to 74 area, heat index is about 104, but I’m sitting in the shade and there’s a nice breeze (like 20-25 mph) is that heat index still applicable? I never knew 104 felt so good.
I got a shade tree on my back deck. Feels tolerable for about 5 minutes with the breezes after that the misery of the heat sets in feels like a bunch of hot air hitting me from all directions.
Ok, technically, I was only out there for about 5-10 minutes also, not because I couldn’t stand it, but had to get started on my pizza with fresh peppers from the garden. Also found a habanero salsa recipe I’m going to try, but in a couple of days after my maters ripen a little bit more
Looks like the models has back off the cooler than normal temps that Chris was advertising early this week. But anything will make it more tolerable. If I’m wrong correct me.
Storms early this morning were quite strong. There was so much wind around 2:30 am, that I got up and looked outside. Torrential rain followed here in S IN.
