Good Thursday, everybody. We have a strong cold front working into the state today, bringing the potential for a line of strong thunderstorms. Behind this front, a more comfortable brand of air rolls in here for the upcoming weekend. Can that better weather hold into eclipse day? That’s the million dollar question.
Scattered storms are possible early today, with a line of storms rolling across the state later this afternoon and evening. Instability ahead of this line will depend on just how much sun we can see. The more instability, the better the chance for high winds and hail.
Regardless, the atmosphere is loaded with moisture, so torrential rains are a good bet. This can cause some local flash flood issues to develop.
Here are the tracking tools for the day…
A few leftover showers and storms linger into the first half of Friday, but things improve as the day wears on. Humidity levels and temps start to come down, setting the stage for a pretty nice start to the high school football season.
Another weak system dives in from the northwest later Saturday, bringing the chance for a shower or thunderstorm..
From here, we really begin to focus on eclipse day Monday. We continue to see the chance for a few clouds and isolated showers and storms going up at some point in the afternoon. The latest GFS cloud forecast…
Beyond that, showers and storms increase Tuesday into Wednesday. This is ahead of what appears to be another prolonged push of below normal temps. The GFS…

Make it a great day and take care.

A few years back the insurance rates for earthquakes in our area increase dramatically, no one knows when the New Madrid area will have a major earthquake. But the insurance companies are not taking any chances with the solar eclipse on Monday. http://www.riverbender.com/articles/details/no-the-upcoming-solar-eclipse-will-not-cause-the-new-madrid-fault-to-slip-22585.cfm

Thanks Chris. Question for you… how do these cooler than normal temps figure into the upcoming all and winter seasons? I am not ready for either, as vacation isn’t here yet. Hoping to get through our week in Florida without any hurricane threats this year. We wound up with a bit over three inches in the rain gauge up to noon yesterday. That’s a good bit for s 36 hour period. Hope today’s storms don’t get bad. Have a great Friday Eve everyone.
Hurricane history…
1969…On this day, Camille makes landfall late along Mississippi Gulf coast…Cat 5
1992…On this day, tropical depression upgraded to first tropical storm of the season in the Atlantic basin…say hello to Andrew.
I remember Hurricane Camille very well. It was the same week my Grandfather past away. My Uncle was up from Mississippi for the funeral. When he returned to his home in Mississippi, his yard and house had a lot of damage. Some, in that area lost everything. He was lucky. That following winter we had a beautiful white Christmas and New Year 1970. It was the snowiest winter in Washington, Indiana I have ever seen, and we have not had one sense. I don’t know about the weather that winter in Kentucky, but I bet most areas didn’t see any snow.
Just had to post this link on Hurricane Camille on August 17th, 1969 : http://www.hurricanescience.org/history/storms/1960s/camille/
I just worry some of our youth will be injured in auto accidents when they should have been in school on Monday
Does anyone have a map of the blockage percentages for the state?
Louisville hit a high of 96 degrees today that’s way warmer than the forecast high.
95 in Richmond.
Boundary setting up over Louisville could lead to training of storms for a little while
Is there an eclipse going on right now? It is so dark outside, my porch light has come on
