Good Saturday and welcome to the last weekend of August. Wait… What? Where did the month go? Things have been very calm around here over the past week, with a blast of fall air taking control. The overall pattern is about to really crank up, with Hurricane Harvey leading the charge.
The rest of the weekend continues to look very good. The only issue may come in the form of an isolated shower or storm late Sunday.
Showers and storms will increase Monday and Tuesday as an upper level low slides in from the northwest…
Locally heavy rains will be possible during this time.
From there, our actual weather will be determined by what happens with Harvey and another tropical system developing off the southeast coastline.
Harvey is going to spend the next few days crushing southeast Texas and Louisiana with historic rains. Here’s the latest to track Harvey…
Take the interactive radar for a drive down to Texas to track the storm. You can also pull up live storm chaser cams to see just how bad things are gettingโฆ
The models are all over the place on what happens with Harvey, but I do think we will get, at least, some rain from this system late next week. There are a lot of variables at play, including exactly how long Harvey decides to loop around Texas and Louisiana.
The Canadian Model brings Harvey right on top of us by Friday, with a trough developing over the Labor Day weekend…
The movement of Harvey likely comes down to two troughs that can nudge this thing northward. The first comes by late Wednesday and Thursday. The next one appears later Sunday or Labor Day.
There is a ton of uncertainty with the setup for later next week into Labor Day weekend, so keep checking back for updates. Won’t be too much longer until it’s multiple update time of the year! ๐
Have a great Saturday and take care.
Chris I’m still waiting on winter talk
Soon enough. Ready for cooler days, chili and all that.
Dammit, don’t use the “c” word like that. Now, I’m craving the stuff but I refuse to eat fall food in August…it’s just unnatural.
Computers are not natural, yet we use them 24/7/365
Flying in a plane isn’t natural. Air-conditioning isn’t natural… Refrigeration isn’t natural. TV isn’t natural….internet isn’t natural.
Here’s the latest on Hurricane Harvey: http://www.weatherstreet.com/hurricane/2017/Harvey.htm
While we are waiting on Chris’s Autumn and Winter discussion, here’s a link you all might find interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kew6K2xYR38
Oh come on man! Totally worthless video. The guy was only saying what would be the conditions by month with absolutely no data or explanations to back up his claims. Any of us could make a YouTube video and do the exact same. Nothing interesting here…
Sounds like it should be shared on everyone’s Facebook pages then, that’s where all of the solid research and peer reviewed information is these days. Bonus points if he filmed it in his basement when he doesn’t have a basement.
On tomorrow’s date (Aug 27) in history 163 years ago was a rare event for our area.

That’s how far back one has to go for the last time an August twister caused loss of life, at least in Kentucky. Thus twisters are far from the highest weather threat this time of year if not a zero threat.
Still thinking of the folks along the Texas coast. Sure wish there was a way to push Harvey along……. ๐
Thanks Chris. It seems like Mother Nature wants to rush the warm weather out of town and usher in cool weather a bit early…. I feel like I blinked and missed summer. That being said, you mentioned another possible disturbance off the SE coast next weekend. Are the tropics starting to heat up more? (Maybe that is where our summer season went.) ๐ Have a wonderful Saturday everyone. Enjoy this beautiful weather while we have it.
In my opinion, an upper level low from the northwest moving southeast towards Kentucky, would have to act like an electromagnetic and pull the left over energy from Hurricane Harvey and combined to produce heavy rainfall to Kentucky, at this time I don’t see that event happening. I notice, off the west coast of Florida, a cluster of thunderstorms are developing at the same time Hurricane Harvey has been down graded to a category 1.
“Sunday or Memorial Day??????” (Labor Day, right?)
This is the winter forecast I will go with, they were successful predicting last winter: http://www.almanac.com/weather/longrange/region/us/7
The real story with long range weather forecasting is that no one knows, except in the Autumn of 1976, a meteorologist at Purdue University was successful in predicting the severe winter of 1977, and again in 1977-78. Since then we have not had any real winter.
Sorry, but you are really full of it in regards to “real” winter.
Schroeder, your literally saying the Ohio Valley hasn’t had a “real” winter in 40 years??? I truly beg to differ.
I know. I mean, wasn’t the all time record low temps for Louisville and Lexington in the mid 1990s? Maybe lowmax records too….Not sure.
We had some bad winter spells in the 80s too with the historic cold all the way down in FL that contributed to the space shuttle disaster.
You better watch it he will quote Kentucky Statue 508.130 again
