Good afternoon, everyone. We continue to track a major pattern change coming next week. It’s one that will bring a very cold setup to much of the country. With the cold, winter weather chances are sure to follow.
I don’t have much time, but wanted to share some of the latest data with you guys. No, I’m not one of those stuffy mets who thinks you guys shouldn’t be able to see such things. 😉
The late week system looks fairly progressive, with chilly showers Thursday into early Friday…
That system is being pushed through here because the pattern change is now coming much quicker on the models. The timeline on the GFS and Canadian Models is to bring rain in here late Monday into Tuesday, with the cold coming in behind that…
I’ve talked and talked and talked about the blocking taking shape. Look at this mega block showing up on the latest run of the GFS…
That’s ne heck of a trough getting caught under the block, bringing frigid air to the eastern half of the country.
The CFS continues to play catch up, but is seeing the cold. Watch the 5 day temperature departure intervals…
Keep in mind, those are in Celsius!
I will have another update this evening, so check back. Enjoy your Monday and take care.
I was thinking about the December 2009 or 10. Here in Letcher county we got a 15 to 18 inch snow a couple weeks or so before Christmas. People’s power went out and the snow lasted through Christmas. It wasn’t a really cold time but damage from the snow lasted of while . Our daughter and her family ended up opening their gifts at our house because their electricity was still off at there house.
Letcher county is in an area ( southeast Kentucky ) that can really catch the snowstorms. In my county, Taylor in January 2009 we had three inches of ice which knock out the power for fifteen days. My last white Christmas was in Vanderburgh county, Indiana where we received twenty two inches of snow in 2004. I’ve been living in Kentucky for 10 years next July and we have yet to receive a white Christmas. Maybe this year ?
Thanks
Well, if the cold hangs around, we’ve got a shot. White Christmases around here are shaky at best, but it looks like it’s setting up so that it will at least be possible. Still a long way off.
Looks like we are headed for a mild winter, with some short lived cold shots from time to time….and that is A ok with this spring lover.
We are snow lovers and will enjoy each chance for the white stuff all winter. Always look forward to watching each chance play out in this blog even if a storm misses my area.
I agree. Right now….I hate the LA type of pattern we have been in lately…boring! I love weather, especially stormy!
In case one is wondering where some of the really cold air is, it is currently minus 14 degrees F in Fairbanks, Alaska! And it’s daytime, and it is only November!
While it is of course suppose to be cold in central Alaska, keep in mind that Fairbank’s average January high is around zero and the average low close to minus 20 Fahrenheit. So this current cold snap is a bit brutal even by Alaska standards.
