Good afternoon, gang. It’s a gloomy day in the bluegrass state, with clouds and scattered showers working through here. Today’s shower chance is what the focus of this update is all about. I mean, that’s all you guys are wanting to know, right? I kid, I kid. The focus continues to be on our massive pattern change just a few days away.
The change takes place early next week and will be fun to watch. We go from 60s and thunderstorms Monday into early Tuesday, to 20s and the potential for snows flying Tuesday night and Wednesday. That kicks off a prolonged period of winter weather engulfing much of the country.
This initial system early in the week continues to look stout. Watch how the Canadian makes the transition from thunderstorms to snows in just a few hours…
You can also see a light snow system following that up.
The GFS looks similar to the Canadian with the thunderstorms to snow chance, but also cranks out a big storm along the east coast…
Here’s a better look at the GFS transition from storms to snowflakes for Tuesday night and Wednesday…
Can we actually go from heavy rain and storms to a period of light snow? Absolutely we can. Does that mean we will? Of course not, but it’s on the table.
The GFS then brings arctic snows in here from next Friday through Sunday…
My goodness that’s a cold look. The model throws more our way a few days after that…
Winter weather lovers have got to be absolutely loving the upcoming pattern!
I will have another update later today. Make it a fantastic Thursday and take care.
Thanks Chris! It`s nice to finally get some snow action.
Let’s not jump the gun too soon.
Looks like we might actual get some snow. Would love to see this pattern stick through the holiday and then clear up. Best time for snow IMO.
Really looking forward to the cold and some snow sticking. My young one keeps wondering when it will snow and keeps asking “What Bailey say on the weather”.
First,Thanks for all your work Chris. I really enjoy your weather blog.
Second Bring it on!!
Thanks Chris! I think it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! At least it sure is feeling like it! Have a great ‘Friday Eve’ afternoon everyone. Chris, even with small snow chances, it means some colder weather to make it seem more like what we expect ( and hope for) around the Christmas season!
We do love the upcoming pattern – but I think a lot of us are afraid it’s going to be cold and “DRY” with minimal snows. I hope not.
I just need cold so the snow guns can start putting down the white stuff at Perfect north and Snowshoe!
A few cold clippers with very light flurries then a real storm but a cold rain is a sure bet for Kentucky. Mark my words!!
Using the plain 500 mb contour map and not the ‘thickness’ one, surface temps look to struggle in the 20’s for highs and lows possibly in the single digits for many in about a week or so, according to GFS map.
That’s at the surface for those temperatures, what about the upper levels ? Will it be cold enough for snowfall to the ground or will it be an ice event ? Hopefully, there will not be a stalled warm front to our south, which would cause an overrunning of warm air over shallow cold air at the surface. An ice event is the worse winter storm that we could have. The ice storm in 2009 was enough for one life time never again.
Well, I for one am not looking forward to the cold. More focused on the awesome weekend we’re about to have.. Sunny and in the 60s!
Yes!!!
Looks cold and dry 🙁
Just give us the cold mother nature, and we’ll take our from there.
Snoooowwwww excited!!!. My BD is Wednesday and all I️ want is COLD WINDS BLOWING and some snow would be the icing on the cake!!! Thanks Chris!!
I just hope we get a good soaking rain before the Arctic air arrives. Any of you gardeners out there water your valuable landscape plants, just in case it doesn’t rain at lease 1.5 inches. It will keep your plants from dehydrating. On that one model it looks like the winter storm tract will be along the eastern seaboard this winter. Last time this happen was back in late 1980’s.
GFS rolling in with heavy snow on the back side of the 1st system, probably wont happen, but never say never thats some cold arctic air
pattern depicted is one we haven’t seen in a while, excited af tbh
Latest GFS Run shows several chances of snow. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Can you link us to that?
Seeing snow in the forecast, especially with a chance of getting a snow day, always gets me giddy. But after last year, I’ve learned not to get my hopes up too much.
